Academic integrity – What is it?

Any action or attempted action that
undermines academic integrity and may
result in an unfair academic advantage
or disadvantage for any member of the

❖ Plagiarism of words
▪ The use of another’s exact words without citing the author

▪ Incorrect
 Plagiarism is the reproduction of someone else’s words, ideas or findings and
presenting them as one’s own without proper acknowledgement.

▪ Correct
 Plagiarism is the “reproduction of someone else’s words, ideas or findings and
presenting them as one’s own without proper acknowledgement”
(Undergraduate Course Handbook: 2008, p.24)

❖ Plagiarism of structure
▪ Paraphrasing another’s words by changing sentence construction or word choice
with citation
▪ Paraphrasing while maintaining original sentence construction with
acknowledging the source
▪ Original:
 "The study was conducted to investigate the impact of social media on
adolescent self-esteem.”
▪ Plagiarized:
 "This research aimed to examine the influence of social networking sites on the
self-worth of teenagers."

▪ Presenting another’s ideas as your own
without giving the person credit

▪ putting quotation marks around part of a quotation but not around all of it
▪ putting quotation marks around a passage that is partly paraphrased and partly
quoted

Intentional plagiarism

❖ Using ChatGPT to generate entire essays or papers
without proper citation or attribution can be
considered plagiarism.

thinking and analytical skills.

❖ ChatGPT may provide factual information, but it
