Jake’s Tech-Free Challenge

Last month, my school challenged us to try something new: a weekend with no technology. That meant no
phones, no computers, no video games, and no TV. At first, the idea sounded impossible. I use my phone
all the time—to text friends, listen to music, and even set alarms!
Still, I decided to take the challenge. On Saturday morning, I turned off my phone and put it away. It felt
strange not checking messages or scrolling through videos. But after a few hours, I noticed something
surprising—I felt more relaxed.
Without technology, I had to find other ways to spend my time. I helped my dad in the garden, played board
games with my sister, and even baked cookies with my mom. I also had time to read a comic book I’d
forgotten about. It had been sitting on my shelf for months, and I finally got the chance to enjoy it.
By Sunday, I had even more free time than I expected. I cleaned my room without being reminded, and I
took our dog for a walk around the neighborhood. It was quiet, and I started to notice things I hadn’t paid
attention to before—the sound of birds, the colors of the trees, and how peaceful the street was without cars
and noise.
By Sunday night, I realized I hadn’t missed my phone as much as I thought I would. I felt calmer, and my
eyes weren’t tired from looking at a screen. Most importantly, I spent real time with my family. We laughed,
talked, and enjoyed each other’s company in a way we hadn’t in a long time.
Now that the weekend is over, I’m back to using technology—but I’m more careful. I try to take breaks,
especially before bed, and I don’t bring my phone to the dinner table anymore. Going tech-free helped me
understand that sometimes, less really is more. I might even try it again next month!
