PARTS OF SPEECH

What do words do in a sentence?

• In a sentence a word can do a particular

job. For example;
• Oops! I carelessly left my old but useful
book in classroom.
• In the sentence above, each of the words
can be classified as particular part of
speech according to the work it is doing in
the sentence – e.g.
Oops! Interjection

classroom Noun
• Note that a word can do different jobs in a
sentence, therefore its part of speech will
depend on the particular work the word is
doing in that particular sentence. For
example:
i. My best colour is blue.
ii. Where is your blue pen?
• In sentence 1 blue is doing the work of a
noun. In sentence 2 blue is doing the work of
an adjective. Note that the same word can do
different jobs.
The eight parts of speech
• In English there are eight parts of speech.
These are: nouns, pronouns, adjectives,
verbs, adverbs, preposition, conjunctions
and interjections. It becomes very easy to
remember the parts of speech if you
group them like this:
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4

Nouns Verbs Prepositions Interjections

Pronouns Adverbs Conjunctions

Adjectives
• Group 1 consists of words that are names
of people, ideas, and things, and words
that describe the things that are named.
• Group 2 consists of words that denote
actions, states, and conditions of being
and words that modify those actions,
states and conditions of being.
• Group 3 consists of connective words that
link words (or group of words) to other
words (or group of words)
• Group 4 consists of words that often
express a mood but having no grammatical
connection or function in the sentence.
• Thus, to identify a word as a part of speech
is to describe the work that it is doing in a
sentence.
