Grounded Theory

Grounded theory is a qualitative research methodology that develops theories grounded in systematically collected and analyzed data. It emphasizes an iterative process where researchers engage with their data to derive insights and construct theories, influenced by their perspectives and experiences. This approach fosters fresh interpretations and rigorous explanations of phenomena through various data collection methods.

GROUNDED

THEORY
A design framework
for qualitative
researchers

Dr Banchakarn Sameephet
What is grounded
theory?

Grounded theory is a
methodology which seeks to
develop theory which is
rooted in—grounded in-data
which have been collected
systematically and analysed
systematically (Strauss &
Corbin, 1994, p. 273).

What is grounded
theory?

Grounded theory methods

consist of systematic, yet flexible
guidelines for collecting and
analysing qualitative data to
construct theories from the data
themselves. It begins with
inductive data. (Charmaz, 2014,
p.1).

3
What is grounded
theory?
The method is intended to
promote researchers’ ongoing
engagement with their data while
continuing to be actively involved
in their emerging analysis. The
data get increasingly focussed
and the analysis becomes
increasingly theoretical through
the iterative process (again and
again) of switching back and
forth between empirical data
and developing analysis (Bryant &
Sharmaz, 2007).

4
What is grounded
theory?
The methods reply on researchers’
perspectives (knowledge, personal
and professional experience) to see
pertinent information and draw
important categories from their
examination of the data.
“Perspectives provide researchers
with frameworks that sensitize them
to what might be operative in
data”(Gilgum, p.117). Researchers’
perspectives as influencing what
they notice and how they interpret
what they notice are well-
established in social research (Kelle
2005).

5
What is grounded
theory?

Grounded theory methods

foster seeing your data in
fresh ways so that it will
bring surprises, spark ideas,
and rigorous explanations
to make more sense of the
phenomenon (Charmaz,
2014).

6
What are Grounded theorists doing?

Collect data to develop Learn what occurs in the

theoretical analyses from research settings we join
the beginning
7
What are Grounded theorists doing?

Observe our research Study how participants explain

their statements and actions
participants’ lives are like and ask what analytic sense
we can make from them 8
What are Grounded theorists doing?

Bring an open mind to what is Pay attention to what we hear,

happening, so that we can learn see, and sense while
about the worlds and people gathering and analysing data
