Experiment 4 - Physics practical
Experiment 4 - Physics practical
TEACHER'S NOTE
ENolain the phenomena of refraction of light to the students and guide them through the experiment.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Glass slab, white sheet of paper, drawing board, drawing pins, board pins, pencil, ruler and protractor.
THEORY
Refraction can be defined as the change in direction of the light, whenever there is achange in the medium
through which it passes.
OAis an incident ray of light which gets refracted, towards the normal while entering the glass slab at its face
DE, and away from the normal while leaving the slab at its face FG.
AB and BC are the corresponding refracted and emergent rays, respectively.
MAN is the normal at point Aon face DE oftheglass slab.
Liand Zrare the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction, respectively for face DE oftheglass slab.
Keeping Aas center, acircle has been drawn, which cuts the incident ray and the refracted ray at point Panda,
respectively.
PM and QN are the two perpendiculars drawn at the normal MAN. Incident ray

Measure the angle of incidence and refraction. Repeat
the experiment with other different angles.
