A (c): The temperature of a gas stream is to be measured by a thermocouple whose junction can be
approximated as a 1-mm-diameter sphere. The properties of the junction are k=35 W/(m-K), p = 8500
ke/m? and c, = 320 J/(kg-K), and the convection heat transfer coefficient between the junction and the
gas is h=210 W/(m?-K). Determine the time-constant as well as the time taken by the thermocouple to
read 99% of the initial temperature difference between the sensor and the gas (99% of T;-T.). [8 M]
Q. 2 (a): An integrated circuit board element is to be cooled by attaching a single, 4-cm-long aluminum
(k=237 W/(m-K)) fin. The fin has a 2 mm x 2 mm square cross section. The surrounding ambient
temperature is 25°C and the convection heat transfer coefficient on each fin surface is 20 W/(m? -K).
To prevent the circuit board from overheating, the upper surface of the circuit board needs to be at a
limiting temperature of 85° C. In these limiting conditions and assuming an adiabatic fin-tip, determine
the heat transfer from the fin. Find the effectiveness of the fin as well. [7 M]
2 (b): Consider a 1-D unsteady-state problem without heat generation. Write the applicable Heat
diffusion equation (in cartesian co-ordinates). How many space and time and boundary conditions are V« A
required to solve this equation? State any three common types of boundary conditions along with their j
mathematical expressions. Also write expression and physical significance of thermal diffusivity by
[5 M]
Q 2 (c): Consider the base plate of a 1200-Watt household iron that has a thickness of L = 0.5 cm, base
area of A = 300 cm’, and thermal conductivity of k= 15 W/(m-K). The inner surface of the base plate
is subjected to uniform heat flux generated by the resistance heaters, and the outer surface loses heat to
the surroundings at T.. = 20°C by convection, as shown in Figure. Taking the convection heat transfer
coefficient to be h = 80 W/(m? -K) and disregarding heat loss by radiation, obtain an expression for the

Q.3 (a): Sketch a typical hydrodynamic and thermal boundary
layer on a flat plate and at a certain ‘x’
location, draw how a typical temperature profile looks like,
if the temperature of the plate is greater
than that of the free stream. Write 2D incompressible mass
conservation, momentum conservation and
energy conservation equation and identify each term. Also simplify
the conservation equations for
hydro dynamic and thermal boundary domain for flow over flat plate.
[SM]

ence-
et by writing nondimensional momentum and energy equations and corresponding boundary conditi
ons
for 2D incompressible fluid flow over hot flat plate. Also write e xpression and physical signifi
cance of
Nusselt number and Stanton number. [5M]
Q.3 (c): Atmospheric air is in parallel flow (u = 10 m/s, T» = 15°C)
over a flat heater surface that is to
be maintained at a temperature of 140°C. The heater surface area is 0.25
m?, and the airflow is known
to induce a drag force of 0.25 N on the heater. What is the electrical power
needed to maintain the
prescribed surface temperature? Properties of air: p = 0.995 kg/m’; ep = 1009
J/(kg. K); Pr = 0.7

over hot plate and obtain
the expression of average convective heat transfer co-efficient to local
convective heat transfer co-
efficient h,
