Q. 2 (a): An integrated circuit board element is to be cooled by attaching a single, 4-cm-long aluminum
(k=237 W/(m-K)) fin. The fin has a 2 mm x 2 mm square cross section. The surrounding ambient
temperature is 25°C and the convection heat transfer coefficient on each fin surface is 20 W/(m? -K).
To prevent the circuit board from overheating, the upper surface of the circuit board needs to be at a
limiting temperature of 85° C. In these limiting conditions and assuming an adiabatic fin-tip, determine
the heat transfer from the fin. Find the effectiveness of the fin as well. [7 M]

2 (b): Consider a 1-D unsteady-state problem without heat generation. Write the applicable Heat

is subjected to uniform heat flux generated by the resistance heaters, and the outer surface loses heat to
the surroundings at T.. = 20°C by convection, as shown in Figure. Taking the convection heat transfer

Name all the joints (0.5 M) and measure all the dimensions (1 M). Draw the velocity diagram
