Prajalpa: Useless speech

- Jalpa = Speech

How we should speak: Level given by Dharma to Yuddhisthar Maharaj in Mahabharat

1) Speech of the Lord

2) Pleasing speech
3) Truthful speech
4) Useless speech
5) Blasphemous speech

Blasphemous Speech

- Purpose to malign a devotee (offensive)

Rumour based Speech

- Speaking about devotees who have fallen or slipped without intention of helping them

The devotee that falls is not our business, it is his business between him and Krishna and any other
authorities

Talking about the problems of devotees does not lead to anything good

- There are standards to follow so we cannot compromise at the same time we have to be
sensitive to the situation

Krishna is Kalpataru

We will get from Krishna what we want from Krishna

We will get from Iskcon what we want from Iskcon

If we do talks that are not annukul for bhakti

Prajalpa can sap away our spiritual energy (Enthusiasm to practice Krishna consciousness)

How do we avoid Prajalpa? We have to find out what nourishes me

Prajalpa can also be related to reading heaps of newspapers, magazine, playing cards and such

One should associate with those in a similar line of business

We should discuss those topics that help us become Krishna consciousness and avoid those topics that
do no help us
Niyamagraha : Following rules and regulations (Increases our attraction to Krishna)

 Rules are like roads

 Principles are like compasses

Generally rules are the best way to follow principles

All rules are subordinate to one principle: Always remember Krishna and never forget Krishna

Difference between rules and principles:

- Example of person having throat problems and chanting 16 rounds in the mind. He is not breaking his
vows

 All rules are for one principle

 All roads must be for one compass (Direction)

Niyamagraha becomes detrimental because we judge other without understanding the context

Birth right made Vedic culture wrong (It messed up Vedic culture)

There are matters of preference and matters of principle

Preference

- Marking notes in Bhagavtam for study v.s. not doing it

When we make matters of preference as absolute, then we become fanatics

Every tradition has a central core and a periphery

- The periphery can be changed but the core has to remain unchanged

The periphery has to change because circumstances will change

Difference between strictness and fanaticism

-When we make the matter of preference into a matter of principle

-There is room for individual choice and we do not recognize this there we become fanatical

2nd Niyamagraha: To not accept rules and dismiss them as being impractical and not important,
whimsically giving up rules and regulations

Dhoti v.s. Pants issue (Certain dresses which increase or decrease our bodily consciousness)

A person can wear whatever they want to chant Hare Krishna but a serious practitioner should wear that
which is more conducive for devotional practice.
