1 Animal Cell

The document outlines an activity focused on the structure of animal cells, including historical discoveries and the formulation of cell theory. It provides objectives, materials needed, and a detailed procedure for observing and labeling animal cells, specifically squamous epithelial cells. Additionally, it includes a comparison table for plant and animal cell structures and their functions.

Cell Structure - Animal Cell

In 1905, Robert Hooke discovered the cell from a piece of cork. He called them cells because they
looked like small rooms separated from one another. Johannes Purkinjie found the cells filled with
fluid called protoplasm and in 1931, Robert Brown noticed the small solid body called nucleus. In
1938, Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann formulated the cell theory stating that the cell is
the basic unit of living things.

ANIMAL CELL
SQUAMOUS EPITHELIAL CELLS

OBJECTIVES:

1. To know the different parts of an animal cell.

2. To differentiate the animal cell from plant cell.

II. MATERIALS:
Microscope toothpick
Glass slide match
Cover slip Gentian violet
Medicine dropper Oil of wintergreen

III. PROCEDURE AND OBSERVATION:

Scrape the inner linings of your cheek with a clean toothpick. Place a drop of water
at the center of a clean glass slide and mix the scraping obtained in it. Dry the mixture carefully
over a match flame. Cool and stain the mounted cells with gentian violet. Flush the excess stain
with running water. Dry the mount again over a match flame. Drop oil of wintergreen especially on
the isolated ones. Shift to HPO for a clear focus.

- Draw a few cheek cells and label the structures. These are squamous epithelial cells.
- Draw a typical animal cell and label the parts completely.

Cell Structure - Animal Cell

Label each structure for the plant and animal cell diagrams below:

Match each cell structure/organelle on the left with its function on the right:

____ nucleus A. modification, sorting of proteins

____ endoplasmic reticulum B. where cellular respiration occurs
____ Golgi apparatus C. gelatinous outer layer of prokaryotic cells
____ mitochondrion D. small structure that carries out protein synthesis
____ chloroplast E. projection used for motility
____ plasma membrane F. synthesis of lipids, secretory pathway proteins
____ cell wall G. stores water and other materials in plant cells
____ capsule H. contains the genetic material (DNA)
____ flagellum I. where photosynthesis occurs
____ ribosome J. provides external support/structure in some cells
____ centriole K. barrier between inside/outside of cell
____ central vacuole L. plays an important role in cell division
Place a check mark or “X” indicating a structure/organelle is present in the indicated cell type:
