WPC300 Midterm Study Guidance
WPC300 Midterm Study Guidance
1. Pay attention to the wording of questions that say which one of the following IS NOT…, rather
than which one of the following IS?... and similar types of “reverse logic” traps.
2. Remember that the book often credits the value of a team approach, especially a diverse team,
as being a great way to view problems through various lenses and helps to avoid bias. So, any
efforts/tasks that are related to coordinating a team around a problem-solving
project/assignment helps to reduce bias in the work done by the team.
3. Review Chapters 1-3 in Bulletproof Problem-Solving Textbook that cover Steps 1-3 of the
Framework: Define the Problem Statement, Disaggregate the Problem Statement, and
Prioritize Tasks.
Here are some suggestions, to be a bit more specific, but this is not a comprehensive list of what
you should review from the first three Chapters and Framework Steps:
● Review Intro Chapter in Bulletproof about overall 7-step Framework and the Problem-
Solving domain, in general.
● Review the simple problem-solving approaches like 5-Whys, Weighted-Average Scoring
Analysis. These shortcut, simple, heuristic type approaches help us get the sense of the
magnitude and directional trend for relationships and data that we may be analyzing.
● Review Step 1 for Defining & Refining Problem Statements – what makes for a good
Problem Statement/Definition and how can an initial Problem Statement be improved if not
well-defined on the first iteration of formulating the Problem Statement.
● Review the various types of Logic Trees and Cleaving Frameworks that we covered in Step 2
of the Bulletproof framework – Disaggregating the Problem Statement and Prioritizing (or
pruning the logic tree). Know how to apply the goal for a logic trees branches (or other type
of means for disaggregating a problem) to be both Mutually Exclusive and Collectively
Exhaustive (MECE), with respect to the entire “solution space” under consideration.
● Review Excel built-in functions for time/date calculations like WEEKDAY, NETWORKDAYS,
MONTH, data alignment functions like VLOOKUP (EXACT versus APPROXIMATE match),
INDEX, MATCH, and miscellaneous functions like CHOOSE, TEXT, etc.
● Practice Pivot Tables for Exploratory Analysis using Dimensions (usually Rows, sometimes
Columns in Pivot Tables) and Measures (usually Values in Pivot Tables)
● Review how to Filter and Sort Pivot Tables, both using the Filters section box of the Pivot
Table pane and using the Rows drop-down menu dialogue, after Pivot Table creation.
● Don’t forget about how to change Value Settings from Sum to Avg to Count, etc, depending
on what Tasks are asking for.

BE SURE TO READ QUESTIONS AND TASK INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY TO GET THE BIG PICTURE
OF WHAT IS BEING ASKED, THEN GO BACK AND RE-READ, AS YOU WORK THROUGH THE
QUESTIONS.
