Lab 1 Bodeplot

The document outlines a laboratory exercise focused on understanding frequency response through single pole response circuits, specifically using RC low-pass and high-pass filters. It includes steps for setting up simulations in LTSpice, conducting AC and transient analyses, and analyzing output waveforms. The objective is to familiarize students with frequency response concepts and circuit behavior through practical experimentation.

Laboratory #1: Frequency Response

Objective: To understand the concept of frequency response with single pole response circuits. Run
ac analysis and transient analysis in the case of low-pass frequency response to get familiarity with the
frequency response.

Step 1: Download and install LTSpice circuit simulator from Linear Technology web site.
http://www.analog.com/en/design-center/design-tools-and-calculators/ltspice-simulator.html
Step 2: Get familiar with creating schematics and running basic simulations from the provided user
guide and circuit examples.

Figure 1. Schematic of RC Low Pass Network

1. AC Simulation

Set up the input voltage source with sinusoidal (sin, cos, and etc). Set only AC amplitude to 1 and AC
phase to 0. Run AC simulation from 1KHz to 1GHz.

1.1. Simulate the test bench and plot the output voltage (𝑣𝑣𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ). Analyze the result and comment
on the waveform.

1.2. Find the frequency where the magnitude drops by 3dB. This frequency is defined as the cut-
off frequency.

1.3. Find the frequency where the phase is lagged by 45 degree.

1.4. Find the slope of the magnitude response when the frequency is above the cut-off frequency.
2. Transient simulation with sinusoidal input

Run a transient simulation with the 160kHz frequency and 100mV amplitude signal for 10 cycles.

2.1. Plot the output voltage (𝑣𝑣𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ) waveform and comment on the response.

2.2. Plot the input voltage (𝑣𝑣𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 ) waveform. What is the phase relationship between 𝑣𝑣𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 and 𝑣𝑣𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ?
Please comment on why in regards to the frequency response above.

2.3. What is the magnitude relationship between 𝑣𝑣𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 and 𝑣𝑣𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ? Please comment on why in
regards to the frequency response above.

3. Transient simulation with step input

Run the transient simulation for at least 10 uS with the step input voltage (𝑣𝑣𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 = 0𝑉𝑉 → 1𝑉𝑉).

3.1. Plot the output voltage (𝑣𝑣𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 ) waveform and comment on the response.

3.2. Find the time-constant of the circuit

3.3. How do you relate the settling time to the time-constant found?

Task 2: Construct the RC high pass filter and repeat the same experiment as RC low pass filter.
