INTRODUCTION TO ANALYSIS
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
ANALYSIS: PURPOSE
ANALYSIS: MEMORY
THE COACH’S RECOLLECTION OF THE MATCH IS AFFECTED BY SEVERAL
FACTORS
• Viewing environment (coaches, like spectators tend to follow the ball and miss off the-
ball information and their viewing position is poor)
• Limitations of human memory (coaches remember only key events of a match, which will
give them a distorted impression of performance)
• Set views and prejudices (some coaches only see what they want or expect to see)
• Coaches to obtain objective data rather than on personal recollection (E.g. Video footage)
INTRODUCTION TO ANALYSIS
ANALYSIS: ASPECTS
• TECHNICAL ASPECTS
Video footage of players to evaluate technique, provide feedback / feedforward
and help design relevant practice sessions
• TACTICAL ASPECTS
Plan devised in the strategy for a specific objective (E.g. slow build-up versus a
fast, counter-attacking style of play). Match analysis determines the most
effective strategy and the specific tactics to be employed by providing objective data
• BEHAVIOURAL ASPECTS
Analysis also helps in assessing the behaviour of players i.e. game reading and
decision making
• PHYSICAL ASPECTS
Tracking of players to check heart rate and other physiological responses
INTRODUCTION TO ANALYSIS
• Coaches to spend sufficient time considering what information is needed and why
• A detailed analysis provides the coach with accurate and reliable information
impacting subsequent practice and performance
• Avoids wasting valuable time and resources. Different data can be collected from one
game to the next which needs to be integrated within the coaching process
• Information gathered from analysis to be put into practical use to facilitate training
program
• The key issue is that coaches should consider what is and what is not being measured
INTRODUCTION TO ANALYSIS
• Such systems are easy to design and cost-effective in terms of both time and resources
• Video provides valuable information that may have been missed or forgotten by coaches and
players during the match
• Recordings of match performance can help the coach to recall and judge performance better
• Coaches analysing video may find that the players have actually performed better or worse than
they originally thought
• Video can be used to concentrate on any aspect of performance or any particular player
• Videos can be used in real time for immediate analysis and evaluation during the half-time
break, or post-match for a deeper insight
INTRODUCTION TO ANALYSIS
A simple notation sheet involving two central midfield players is highlighted in Table 2.1. The
data may indicate a weakness in the ability of this pairing to win the ball in the air, although
this issue needs to be considered within the context of the match or, more likely, a series of
matches.

TEAM ANALYSIS
Reasons for analysis
a) The analysis of the important factors of the game.
i) To identify strength and weaknesses of your own or
opponent teams.
ii) To improve awareness of the demand of the modern game.
• Useful for young players to study their performance from the point of their position
• To track poor positioning of individuals that can lead to loss of team shape
