RSM 219 – GROUP ASSIGNMENT – PART I

Winter 2022

Due Date: Friday, February 25th at 5:00pm (Toronto Time)


Submission: 1 submission per group - Using the link on Quercus; only PDF or Word
documents can be submitted. Any other format, including .pages will not be
marked. We will not be accepting re-submissions if the format submitted does not
conform.

Length: Your report must not exceed 3 double-spaced typewritten (12 pt. font) pages.
Please note that the bibliography is not subject to the 3 page limit, i.e. you can add an
additional page for the bibliography. Your margins should be at least 2.5cm top and
bottom, left and right. You should include the Rotman cover page. This page is not part
of your 3 page limit.

This assignment is to be completed as a group. Only 1 copy of the report shall be


submitted on behalf of the group. Please double check your submission to make sure
the correct version has been uploaded before the deadline.

Total marks available for part 1 of the group assignment is 6 marks.

Assignment
As a group pick one of the following sectors and companies to analyze. You will be
required to complete all 3 parts of the assignment using the sector and company
chosen.

Telecommunication

1. Use the 2020 annual reports for your analysis. The annual reports have been
uploaded to Quercus under the Group Assignment module. Note that the 2021
annual reports for these companies will be released at some point over the next
month but we do not know the exact date so please do not use the 2021 annual
reports in your analysis. For your reference, you can use www.sedar.com to find
the annual report and other important information released by any company. You
can also go to the company website under the Investor Relations tab.

2. Prepare an environmental analysis of the company selected. Address the following


items in your analysis:
• Brief history of the company / background analysis
• Type of Industry – explain the product or service.
• Identify some of the key success factors of the company and how they have
been able to use these advantages to compete in their respective industry.
• Identify one competitor and discuss similarities and differences between the
two companies. Be as detailed as possible. Note that you should not be
including any ratio calculations here. You will have an opportunity to do this in
a subsequent submission.
• Consult business newspaper/online articles and discuss at least 1 current
event that could affect the financial performance of the company.

Notes:
• You must include a bibliography with your submission. You do not need to
include the financial statements for this submission but please make it clear
what company you’re using and the year-end of the company.
• You should not include any ratio calculations for this submission (Part
1).
• Before you can answer the questions in #2 above, it would be useful to
understand the company and how they are doing. Hence, the review/general
understanding of the financial statements and other reports (annual report)
will provide information to assist with your answers.
• You can use APA or MLA format for your bibliography.
