SECOND CONDITIONAL EXERCISES

1. Fill the gaps with the correct form of the verb in brackets (Second
Conditional):

a) If a deer got into your garden, it would eat (eat) all your plants.
b) You wouldn't pass (not pass) the exam if you didn't study harder.
c) If I were you, I wouldn't open (not open) that umbrella inside the house. It's bad
luck!
d) I'd love to visit India if I had (have) the chance.
e) I would write (write) a book if I had more free time.
f) You'd be very healthy if you ate (eat) an apple every day.
g) I wouldn't do that if I were (be) you.
h) If I had (have) a penny for each Coke I've ever drunk, I would be rich.
i) If the weather were better, we would go (go) to the park.

2. Choose the correct form of each verb to make second conditional


sentences:

a) If I found (find) a wallet in the street, I would give (give) it to the police.
b) We would go (go) skiing if it snowed (snow).
c) If you saw (see) him again, would you recognize (you/recognize) him?
d) If I had (have) a million pounds, I would never work (never/work) again.

3. Rewrite the following sentences using the second conditional:

a) It's raining, so we can't have lunch outside.


→ If it weren't raining, we could have lunch outside.
b) I'm busy, therefore I won't come with you.
→ If I weren't busy, I would come with you.
c) This book is too expensive, so I'm not going to buy it.
→ If this book weren't too expensive, I would buy it.
d) It's cold, so we won't go to the beach.
→ If it weren't cold, we would go to the beach.
e) I won't call him because I haven't got his phone number.
→ If I had his phone number, I would call him.

4. Use your own ideas to complete these sentences:

a) If you took more exercise, you would feel healthier.


b) Would you go to the party if you were invited?
c) If you smoked a cigarette around me, I would leave the room.
d) If I didn't have to work tomorrow, I would go on a trip.
e) I'd be extremely happy if I won the lottery.
If I were Prime Minister, I would focus on education reforms.
f) If I could go anywhere in the world, I would visit Japan.

5. Give advice using "If I were you...". Use the expressions in the box:

a) Your friend hasn't been feeling well lately.


→ If I were you, I would see a doctor.
b) Your brother wants to lose weight.
→ If I were you, I wouldn't eat so many sweets.
c) Your friend has a headache.
→ If I were you, I would take an aspirin.
d) Your classmate has been having nightmares recently.
→ If I were you, I wouldn't watch so many horror films.
e) Your friend feels cold.
→ If I were you, I would put on a jacket.
