Ayamba is a class six pupil in one of the schools in town. She is twelve years
old and speaks English, French, Kenyang and Douala. She is fortunate to have
always had her grandparents with her. They speak their local language with
her at home. While in school, she uses the official languages: English and
French. She used to visit her grandparents in the village during long holidays.
These visits did help her to speak the Kenyang language fluently and
exposed her to aspects of her culture. She also did farming and fetching of
water.
In school, Ayamba accepts and plays with her classmates no matter where
they come from. Manga is her best friend. She is from the Douala tribe and
speaks Douala fluently. Her closeness to Manga made her speak the Douala
language. This also encouraged Manga to speak Kenyang. During break one
can hear them discussing in either of the local languages. This has
encouraged their classmates to speak at least their different local languages.
