Agricultural Practices and Food Security Status in Primary Schools in

Mukono District

1. Introduction
Agriculture plays a crucial role in ensuring food security, particularly in developing
countries like Uganda. In rural and peri-urban districts such as Mukono, many primary
schools engage in agricultural activities to supplement feeding programs. However, despite
the potential of these initiatives, food insecurity among pupils remains a challenge. This
study seeks to explore the relationship between agricultural practices and the food security
status of primary schools in Mukono District.

2. Background of the Study

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to
sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. In Uganda, particularly in rural areas, primary schools
often rely on subsistence farming and small-scale agricultural activities to support school
feeding programs. Mukono District, located in central Uganda, has a mix of rural and urban
settings and is known for its agricultural potential. Nevertheless, cases of malnutrition and
school absenteeism due to hunger have been reported.

Several schools have incorporated gardening and animal husbandry into their curriculum
and daily activities, not only to enhance learning but also to improve the nutritional intake
of pupils. Despite these efforts, there is limited empirical data on how these agricultural
practices influence food availability, accessibility, and utilization in schools. This study aims
to bridge this knowledge gap.

3. Statement of the Problem

Despite the presence of agricultural initiatives in many primary schools in Mukono District,
a significant number of pupils continue to experience food insecurity. This raises concerns
about the effectiveness of these agricultural practices in supporting the nutritional needs of
learners. The lack of comprehensive data on the impact of these practices makes it difficult
for education stakeholders and policymakers to design effective interventions. There is a
need to examine the extent to which school-based agricultural activities contribute to the
food security status of pupils.

4. Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between agricultural practices
and the food security status in primary schools in Mukono District.
5. Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the types of agricultural practices implemented in primary schools in Mukono
District.

2. To assess the current food security status of pupils in these schools.

3. To analyze the contribution of school-based agricultural activities to pupils' food security.

4. To identify challenges faced by schools in implementing agricultural practices.

6. Research Questions
1. What types of agricultural practices are employed in primary schools in Mukono District?

2. What is the current food security status among pupils in these schools?

3. How do agricultural practices in schools contribute to the food security of pupils?

4. What challenges do schools face in implementing agricultural practices?

7. Scope of the Study

Geographical Scope: The study will be conducted in selected primary schools within
Mukono District.

Content Scope: The study will focus on school-based agricultural activities, types of crops
grown, livestock kept, and the effect of these practices on the availability and quality of food
provided to pupils.

Time Scope: The study will cover agricultural and food security data from the past three
academic years (2022–2025).

8. Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will provide valuable insights for school administrators,
policymakers, and NGOs involved in school feeding programs. It will help in evaluating and
strengthening agricultural initiatives in schools as a sustainable solution to food insecurity.
Additionally, the study can inform curriculum development by highlighting the practical
benefits of agricultural education.

9. Limitations of the Study

The study may face challenges in data collection due to limited school records on
agricultural output and feeding programs.

Seasonal variations may affect the consistency of agricultural productivity, impacting the
findings.

Some respondents (e.g., school heads or teachers) may provide biased responses to present
their schools in a positive light.
10. Definition of Terms
Agricultural Practices: Activities related to farming and animal husbandry carried out
within the school setting.

Food Security: A situation in which all pupils have consistent access to sufficient, safe, and
nutritious food to support their health and learning.

Primary Schools: Educational institutions offering early childhood and basic education
(typically from P.1 to P.7 in Uganda).

Mukono District: A district in Central Uganda known for its agricultural activities and
growing population.

School Feeding Programs: Initiatives undertaken by schools to provide meals or snacks to

pupils during the school day.
