The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) report places

Bangladesh's fishery productivity in third place for inland open-water

catch and fifth place for aquaculture. The production of fish in
Bangladesh's sea, rivers, channels, canals, and Haur is declining for a
variety of reasons, despite the country recently becoming self-sufficient
in this area. Are not it so surprising and also a matter of perturbation for
our future generation?
When I was younger, I used to watch “Discovery” and “National
Geographic” channels on television with my father and grandparents.
From there, I learned about many marine animals and their habitats,
traits, and so forth. I didn't understand much, but my father explained it.
It was so surprising to me that I became even more curious. As I grew
up, that curiosity began to blossom into an obsession. When I was
accepted to Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, a
prestigious university in Bangladesh, my obsession finally became a
possibility. Now, I aim to become a professional marine ecologist, so a
Master's from a top-class university will be a valuable addition to my
career.
I graduated in Fisheries from Chattogram Veterinary and Animal
Sciences University. During my Bachelor's, I developed basic laboratory
skills and an interest in water life. I was introduced to a plethora of
courses under five departments which were the Department of
Aquaculture, Department of Marine Bio-resource Science, Department
of Fisheries Resource Management, Department of Fishing and Post-
Harvest Technology, and Department of Fish Biology and
Biotechnology. Among all the courses, the Marine Bio-resource and
Fishing and Post-Harvest Technology courses drew my interest. I was
fascinated by ocean organisms' facts, designs, and functions and their
economic value.
In my internship, I and some of my classmates conducted a survey
related to the livelihood of fishermen their experience, and post-harvest
practice in Cox’s Bazar area, one of the major marine coastal areas in
Bangladesh. We visited some common landing centers and some
processing areas like dry fish processing areas, fermented fish product
processing areas, and so on. I developed core practical and
communication skills but soon realized that there were so many gaps in
this sector. The most common problem the fisherman addressed was that
diversity and the quantity of fish are declining. Another problem was
that the majority of them engaged with artisanal fisheries as a result they
had trouble maintaining the quality. After that survey, I engaged myself
in developing fish products with long shelf life. I conducted research in
my current Master’s degree named “Analysis of the effectiveness of
lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the fish mince and mince-based fish
products”. Here I learned many laboratory skills like RT-PCR,
biochemical testing (Protein, Moisture, Ash, Lipid, TVBN testing,
Histamine testing, Amino acid profiling, and Fatty acid profiling),
microbial test and equipment handling (microbial culture, media
preparation, autoclave use, sterilization process, serial dilution and
others), water quality parameter testing and so many things. I received
appreciation for my work. It was a great form of motivation for me. But
when I went to collect samples for my research again I heard the same
complaint about the loss of biodiversity faced by our fishermen of our
coastal areas. Now I have focused on overcoming the problem because
without sustainable resources, we can't develop ourselves economically.
For this, I need to further equip myself with knowledge and skills related
to the environmental sector. After deciding to pursue a Master's degree
in Marine Environment, I've begun exploring various graduate programs
at different colleges online. Australia, in my opinion, is a good
destination for international students, particularly those who are
interested in marine life. Australia holds one of the most highly reputed
education systems in the world. Australia is home to a large number of
prestigious universities. The marine environmental sector is especially
well-suited for students looking to pursue high-quality education. Many
innovations that changed the world were produced by the nation's
environmental sector. Additionally, the nation's diversity, rights
equality, and social and personal safety are well-known globally.
Therefore, all of these elements convinced me to pursue my post-
graduation in Australia rather than any other country.
After reviewing some universities' websites, I came across the website
of the University of Tasmania. The Department of Building, Marine, and
Antarctic Science is well-organized and full of highly qualified faculty
members. I want to highlight the work of Dr. Lennart Bach in particular.
I read through several of his works. I find great inspiration in his
significant contributions to the study of global warming and the
relationship between sea life and carbon dioxide. I should also mention
Dr. Stuart Corney and Professor Julia Blanchard. Journals and
conference articles mostly focusing on aquaculture practice, feeding
type, and sustainable water environment management strategies that
boost fish output can be found in Professor Julia Blanchar's extensive
portfolio. The improvement of biodiversity is a specific focus of Dr.
Stuart Corney's work. In order to safeguard the ecosystems of the
Southern Ocean, he has conducted a number of studies based on the
tracking of predators in the marine environment. He has also carried out
studies that show how the dynamics of the food chain affect social and
ecological factors. I found their works to be quite inspiring and
engaging. I have high hopes that by pursuing my Master's degree with
these outstanding professors, I will be able to advance my undergraduate
knowledge. I believe that there are numerous prospects in the
department for me to pursue a Master's degree with skill. Overall, the
Department of Building at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies
of the University of Tasmania provides me with the ideal setting for
showcasing my abilities as a fisheries graduate and learning from some
top-notch instructors.
Graduate students can choose MSc programs at the University of
Tasmania. I have made the decision to apply for the MSc program
because, in the distant future, I hope to become a prosperous
professional researcher in marine ecology. I believe this program will
enhance my research abilities and contribute to my overall personal
growth. I am confident that this degree will enhance my résumé and help
me stay one step ahead of the competition in the professional world.
I want to come to this university with the intention of expanding my
horizons and gaining new experiences while earning a degree with
excellent academic status. After completing my MSc, I may become a
highly qualified researcher in the industry by acquiring new skills and
in-depth information. I want to use my abilities and approach to
contribute to Bangladesh's next megaprojects. My goal is to establish a
productive relationship with the University of Tasmania as I aim to
expand and apply my expertise within the marine sector.
