Projectile Motion
A. Topic

B. Key Concepts Projectile motion occurs when an object is launched with an initial
velocity and follows a curved path under the influence of gravity. This
path, known as a trajectory, results from motion in two dimensions,
involving both horizontal and vertical components.
In two-dimensional motion, physical quantities such as acceleration,
displacement, and velocity are vectors, meaning they have both
magnitude and direction. The motion can be broken down into
horizontal and vertical components, each governed by its own set of
forces.
A classic example of projectile motion is an object moving through the

air under gravity. The horizontal motion remains constant if air

resistance is negligible, while the vertical motion is influenced by
gravity, creating a parabolic trajectory.
One key principle of projectile motion is the independence of
horizontal and vertical motion. This means that motion in one
direction does not affect the other. For instance, when a ball is thrown
horizontally, gravity determines its downward velocity, but it does not
influence the horizontal motion.
The velocity of a projectile can be analyzed using trigonometry,
specifically sine and cosine functions, to determine the horizontal and
vertical components based on the launch angle.
Similarly, acceleration in two-dimensional motion has both horizontal
and vertical components. The vertical component is primarily affected
by gravity, while external forces like friction may influence the
horizontal component.
Key measurements in projectile motion include the range, which is the
total horizontal distance traveled, and the maximum height, the
highest point reached during flight. These values can be determined
using kinematic equations. Understanding projectile motion is
essential in physics, engineering, and real-world applications such as
sports and ballistics.

Who among you here is a varsity player? Have you ever played
basketball, volleyball, or soccer? When watching or playing these sports,
what do you notice about how players aim their shots, spikes, or kicks?
What techniques do they use to ensure accuracy and power?

The teacher will then summarize the students answers. And will ask
what do they think is the topic that will be going to discuss.

G. Reading of the Learning Objectives:

Presentation and Visual Aids.

angles and observe the motion.

F. Discussing of the

and practicing Guide Question:
new skills #2 1. When you jumped straight up, where did you land, and why did you
not move forward or backward while in the air?
2. When you threw the ball at different angles, how did its motion
EXPLORE change, and what forces acted on it as it moved?
3. How does the motion of the ball compare to your vertical jump, and
what does this tell us about horizontal and vertical motion in projectile
motion?

Jumping straight up has only vertical motion due to gravity, so you land
in the same spot. Throwing a ball at an angle creates a curved path
because of combined horizontal and vertical motion. Gravity pulls it
down while horizontal motion stays constant. Unlike jumping, projectile
G. Developing motion has both components. This shows that horizontal and vertical
mastery motions are independent but happen together.
(Leads to formative
assessment) Discussion and Concept Building
Numeracy and Literacy Application:
During the discussion, teacher will flash solving numbers to get the word
EXPLAIN that is being looked in the discussion. The students will then add the
numbers and will get the correct answer. In the box there are 4 words
with their corresponding total numbers. The first to get the answer will
receive a prize.
Projectile motion occurs when an object is given an initial velocity and
moves along a curved path due to gravity. This curved path is called a
trajectory, and objects in such motion are known as projectiles.

 Horizontally launched projectiles start with an initial velocity

from an elevated position and follow a downward curved path.

Figure 1. A man diving into the water.

What motion of the man as it dives into the water is moving along
a curved path downwards due to a natural force called _________.
(gravitational force of the earth or gravity.)
(40 + 33 = 73)
B105- PARABOLA 68- ACCELERATION

73- GRAVITATIONAL FORCE 42- SPEED

 Angle- Launched Projectile are projectiles launched at an angle

with respect to the horizontal and rises to a peak while moving
horizontally. Upon reaching the peak, the projectile falls with a
motion that is symmetrical to its path upwards to the peak.

Figure 2. A sepak takraw player kicking a rattan ball over the net.

What is the projectile in Figure 2? If you think that the rattan ball is the
projectile, then you are right! How do you describe its trajectory? The
rattan ball is travelling on a curved path. In mathematical terms, what
do you call this pattern? Try to solve this then choose the corresponding
total number on the box.

(45 + 60 = 105)

B105- PARABOLA 68- ACCELERATION

74- GRAVITATIONAL FORCE 42- SPEED

If you got the term parabola, then you were right! An angle-launched
projectile exhibits a full parabolic trajectory motion. This shows that
as the player kicked the rattan ball in the air, the ball will eventually go
back to the ground still due to gravity as it moves horizontally. Hence
projectile motion consists of horizontal and vertical motion working
independently
