1. Financial Assistance & Goal-Setting

CAPS LO 1: Personal development

1. Bursaries

Definition: Non-repayable funds awarded by government, institutions or pri-


vate bodies.

Criteria: Academic merit (e.g. top NSC results), financial need (household in-
come ≤ R350 000 p.a.), special talent (sport, culture) or community service.

Example: NSFAS for students from households earning ≤ the threshold; UCT
Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship (top 2% NSC).

Activity: Research two bursary application forms; identify required documenta-


tion.

2. SMART Goals

Specific: “Improve my APS by 3 points.”

Measurable: “Submit portfolio by 30 May.”

Achievable: Based on available study time.

Relevant: Tied to career of choice (e.g. medicine).

Time-bound: Deadline end of term.

Class task: Draft one short-, one medium- and one long-term goal; peer re-
view.
3. Perseverance vs. Persistence

Perseverance: Sustained effort despite obstacles (e.g. rewriting NBT after fail-
ing once).

Persistence: Continual action toward a goal (e.g. weekly CV updates).

Example: Applying to three universities even if first choice rejects you.

CAPS LO 3: Social development

1. Patriarchy & Bigotry

Patriarchy: System where men hold decision-making power in families, politics


and economy.

Bigotry: Prejudice resulting in denial of rights (e.g. refusing leadership roles to


women).

Example: Boardrooms with < 20 % female directors.

2. Femicide & Rape

Femicide: Gender-based killing of women; SA rate ~12 per 100 000 (highest
globally).

Rape: Legally defined in Sexual Offences Act 32 of 2007 as non-consensual


penetration of any orifice.

Case Study: “#AmINext” campaign—raises awareness of femicide hotspots.


3. Psychological & Emotional Trauma

Psychological trauma: Disruption of self-identity, flashbacks, nightmares.

Emotional trauma: Persistent shame, guilt, depression.

Intervention: Referral to trauma counsellors (Thuthuzela Care Centres).

4. 16 Days of Activism & CSE

16 Days (25 Nov–10 Dec): Local NGO “Pow Wow” hosts marches, school work-
shops on consent.

CSE: Teaches human rights, gender equality, sexual health—integrated across

Modules: Academic Literacy (AL), Quantitative Literacy (QL), Mathematics


(MAT).

Portfolio: CV, leadership certificates, community-service log, motivational let-


ter.
