Note on Reflection of light

Reflection of light is the process where light rays bounce back after hitting a surface. There are two types of reflection: regular reflection from smooth surfaces and diffused reflection from rough surfaces. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, and images formed can be real or virtual depending on the surface used.

Reflection of light

The process through which light rays fall on

the surface and gets bounced back is known
as reflection of light.

Types of reflection

1. Regular reflection occur when reflected

rays from a smooth surface travel in the
same direction and at same angle (the
reflected rays are parallel to each other).
Examples of smooth surface glass, and
polished metal.

1
2. Diffused/Irregular reflection is
produced by rough surfaces that tend to
scatter the reflected rays in different
direction (the reflected rays are not parallel
to each other). Examples of rough surface
cloth and paper.

Law of reflection
The angle of incidence is equal to the angle
of reflection.

2
1. The ray of light which falls on the mirror
surface is called incident ray.

2. The light ray which is sent back by the

mirror is called reflected ray.

3. The normal is a line drawn at right angles

to the mirror surface at the point of
incidence.

4. The angle between incident ray and the

normal is called angle of incidence (i).

5. The angle between the reflected ray and

the normal is called angle of reflection (r)
