Meaning of philosophy
Layman perspective as way of life, attitude to life, proverbial statements, witty sayings,
belief system, system of divination, words of wisdoms etc
Etymological perspective as derived from the two Greek words, philoa and Sophia -
love and wisdom
Professional definitions of philosophy as theoretical orientation to issues and problems;
method of thinking; critical reflection; system of reflective questioning; rational
investigation/ analysis of issues; systematic and consistence use of logical thinking; etc
Meaning of philosophy of education
Layman perspective as motto / objectives of a school, slogan on education, personal
view on purpose / goal of education etc
Professional definitions of philosophy of education as applied branch of philosophy
that relates to education; application of philosophy to education; the use of methods or
tools of philosophy to investigate problems and issues in education; examination of
education according to philosophical outlook; deduction of educational implication from
systematic philosophy etc.
Modes of philosophy
Prescriptive mode seeks to recommend principles that could be used to decide what actions and
qualities are most worthwhile. It sets standards for assessment, judgement and appraisal
Speculative mode is a way of asking reflective questions about anything that exists.
Analytic mode involves the examination of the meaning of concepts for clarity
