SECTION A: Map and Photograph Skills

Answer all items in this section.

Item 1: Map Skills

For this item use the East Africa 1:50,000(Uganda) map extract of Bulisa series
Y732, sheet 29/4, Edition3-U.S.D, the information in the text below and the
support materials in Fig. 1 provided to answer the tasks given:

The people of BULIISA are in a great excitement after receiving the good news of
the government’s proposal to upgrade part of the loose surface road from Buliisa
road junction to the terminal point at the sub county boundary at Wanseko to the
level of tarmac. The construction rates on the invoice of Zal constructions, which is
contracted to complete the task indicate UGX 50,000,000 per kilometer upgraded.
There is also a proposed dredging of part of lake Albert South of Northing 36, and
the same construction company’s invoice reads a construction rate of UGX
10,000,000 per a square kilometer dredged.

You are hired by the District department of works to help in guiding the locations
and the possible expenses the district council is likely to spend in the whole
campaign of road construction and dredging the lake. Due to unforeseen
circumstances, you are unable to have a physical pilot study of the areas of interest,
but only provided with topographic map extract of BULIISA, and it is the one you
are going to use as an expert to determine the total expenditure of the whole
project.

Task:
(a) Help the district works department to determine the location of the key
points of the road by stating the grid reference of the road junction
mentioned above, and the grid reference of the terminal point of the road,
and clearly determine the bearing of the road junction from the road
terminal.
(b) Determine the total expenditure needed by the government to cover all the
construction and dredging costs of the road and the lake respectively.

Item 2: Photograph Skills

In the evening hours of Wednesday last week, a violent explosion occurred on the
top a nearby highland in your local area. This was accompanied by flow of reddish
porridge like substance which were very hot and vicious from the top of the
highland. Several myths and superstitions have been advanced by the residents
about the cause of this explosion. With the Christians saying it the power of God
while African traditionalists lament that the ancestral spirits have sent a
punishment to the community due to their continued behavior of abandoning their
indigenous religion to foreign beliefs. In fact both parties take this occurrence as a
curse, a disgrace. You have been contacted to help the community solve the puzzle
in a village meeting.

Task
Write a speech of not more than 200 words informing the residents about
what could have caused the explosion. Point out the possible opportunities
and challenges associated with the process.

Item 3.

African countries like Zambia are blessed with minerals such as Copper, where by
citizens have got an opportunity to change their life styles. Most of mining centers
are owned by foreign investors who have put in all the necessary resources to see
that mining of copper is successful and benefits the community at large. You have
been given an opportunity to be the supervisor of Kitwe mines.

You have been invited as one of the leaders to address the youth who have got an
opportunity to work at Kitwe mines, prepare a speech to en-light the youth about
how copper is mined and how mining has contributed to the development of
Zambia.

Item 4.

Manufacturing is the period of social and economic change that transforms raw
materials into finished goods. Industrialization requires many key factors to
develop on a significant scale. They include land, labor, capital, technology, water,
power and energy. And in East Africa and your home areas, you have observed a
large development of industries that have positively and negatively impacted our
societies.

Write an advice note to your community, showing the people the effects of
developing industries in the area.

Item 5:

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. In the year 2022, the Department of Environmental
