Hub Traffic Optimizer (HTO-1) /
Hub Modulator (HTX-450) Initial Configuration
Firmware version: 2.3.1
February 2017

Comtech Proprietary and Confidential 1

HTO-1 / HTX-450

– The HTO-1 acts as the network processor while the HTX-450 is strictly used
as a DVB-S2 transmitter.
– IF (50 – 180 MHz) L-Band (950 – 2150 MHz) Frequency Range
– DVB-S2 Carrier up to 450 Mbps / 150 Msps
– ACM/VCM, Header/Payload Compression, 3 Layer QoS
– The HTO-1 & HTX-450 are bridged together by a straight through ethernet
cable from the HTX-450 GE1 port to the HTO-1 LAN Port therefore allowing
M&C through the HTO-1.

Router Mode Physical Connections

– Red Cable (HTO-1-WAN): When the HTX-450 is connected to the HTO-1 it

enters bridge mode. This allows for all network processing functions to be
controlled by the HTO-1. The HTX-450 is only used to modulate.
– Blue Cable (MGT-1): Connects with the hub management devices including
NetVue & and bandwidth manager.
– Green Cable (LAN-1): Customer traffic will reside on this interface.

BPM Mode Physical Connections

– Red Cable (HTO-1-WAN): When the HTX-450 is connected to the HTO-1 it

enters bridge mode. This allows for all network processing functions to be
controlled by the HTO-1. The HTX-450 is only used to modulate.
– Blue Cable (MGT-1): Connects with the hub management devices including
NetVue & and bandwidth manager.
– Green Cable (EXP TRF-1): Connects with the HRX-16 & HRX-64. All of the
receive traffic will flow through the HTO-1 allowing it to be the MAC address
utilized on a split path layer 2 network. Therefore once traffic is sent to the
outbound network it will send the traffic to the HTO-1.
– Black Cable (LAN-1): Bridged port for Customer traffic

Configure IP Address

– Factory default IP address 192.1.1.9/24

– Serial DB-9M Null modem pin out above
– Communication:
• 38,400 bps (Baud Rate)
• 8 Data Bits
• 1 Stop Bit
• Parity = None
• Local Echo = on
• Local Line Editing=on
– Command Syntax example using “?”
– Command Syntax “info” will provide IP & firmware information

– Default user name and password is “comtech”

– If accessing from a windows server insure that the IP address is a
member of the trusted sites
– Caching should be disabled to prevent display issues
– IE is the preferred windows browser

Vipersat Management system
Configuration

– Network ID (1-254) is used to separate hardware on a VMS network.

– Management Multicast IP will be set by the HTO-1 in all Heights devices that are in
communication and receive commands from VMS on that Multicast address.
– VMS communicates with the device on base port 49152 or C000 this should not be
changed without contacting ESC support. Inside the modem’s this has the highest
priority.
– After registration the modem VMS status will display the VMS IP address, status &
version. VMS must be activated for this to occur.
– Submit must be entered after each column is changed.
Comtech EF Data Proprietary 7
Working Mode

– All devices on the network will operate on the same working mode as the HTO-1.
– Router mode: the modem operates at layer 3 with a IP & MAC address for the traffic port.
– All traffic in Router mode must be routed in order for it to pass.
– BPM mode: the modem operates at layer 2 without a MAC address for the traffic port.
– Dynamic routing protocols and VLAN’s are able to be passed in BPM mode only.

Traffic IP (LAN-1)

– The working mode will affect the configuration of LAN-1.

– Router mode an IP address is required and the customer's traffic will operate at layer 3.
– BPM mode an IP address is not required and the customer’s traffic will operate at layer 2.
– Router mode the device is accessible via HTTP on the MGT & TRF IP addresses.
– BPM mode the device is only accessible via HTTP on the MGT IP address.
– Regardless of the working mode MGT traffic will remain layer 3.
Comtech EF Data Proprietary 9
Modulator Configuration

– Adaptive Coding Modulation (ACM) is on or off for all the receiving devices.
– Do not turn on the carrier until the correct Tx frequency is set.

Comtech EF Data Proprietary 10

Routing Table

– RIP announcements are sent to the LAN only.

– With CDRP enabled VMS & ECM routes will automatically be added, along with the
remaining routes of the H8/H16/H32/H64 modems and their route table.
– In Router mode both the MGMT & TRF subnets will appear.
– In BPM mode only the MGMT subnet will appear since the TRF will be layer 2.
– Header & Payload compress is able to be turned on for the entire network from this page.
