The Mission of the
Catholic Church
From the Catechism: Most
importa
refers to a communityof
believers

777 The word "Church" means "convocation." It designates the assembly of those whom God's Word
matg iface
"convokes," i.e., gathers together to form the People of God, and who themselves, nourished with the Body
of Christ, become the Body of Christ.

778 The Church is both the means and the goal of God's plan: prefigured in creation, prepared for in the Old
Covenant, founded by the words and actions of Jesus Christ, fulfilled by his redeeming cross and his
Resurrection, the Church has been manifested as the mystery of salvation by the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit. She will be perfected in the glory of heaven as the assembly of all the redeemed of the earth.

779 The Church is both visible and spiritual, a hierarchical society and the Mystical Body of Christ. She is one,
yet formed of two components, human and divine. That is her mystery, which only faith can accept.

780 The Church in this world is the sacrament of salvation, the sign and the instrument of the communion of
God and men.
What is the Church?
● The word “Church” has several
meanings:
○ A building where people gather
to worship
○ The entire people of the God
throughout the world
○ The diocese (Local Church)
○ The assembly of believers
gathered for the celebration of
the liturgy.

The Mission of the Church
● The word “Church” means “convocation” - a gathering called together by another person or
group.
○ So, the Church refers to those who have been called together by God’s Word, Jesus Christ.
○ The purpose of the Church is to proclaim the Good News that through Christ, sin and death have been
overcome and humanity’s broken relationship with God has been restored.
● The Church is both the means and the goal of God’s plan.
○ The Church is the means because God uses the Church and Her members to proclaim the Good News in
word and in deed.
○ The Church is the goal because through the aid of the Holy Spirit, the members of the Church live
together in such a way as to participate in God’s plan to Make the Kingdom of God present in the
world.
● “...the Church in this world is the sacrament of salvation, the sign and instrument of the
communion of God and men.” (CCC, 780)

relationship to the Church
○ Christ is the head, the Church is His Body
● Also describes unity within the diversity of
the Church
○ All parts serve their purpose. None is
unneeded.

Church and the individual members with the
task of making Him known in the world.
Prayer of St.
Teresa of Avila
Christ has no body now on earth
but yours; no hands but yours; no
feet but yours.

Yours are the eyes through which

the compassion of Christ must look
out on the world.

Yours are the feet with which He is

to go about doing good.

Yours are the hands with which He

is to bless His people.
Temple of the Holy Spirit
● From St. Paul (1 Cor 3:16-17)
● The Temple was the place where God was present
in a special way. So, the Holy Spirit is present in
the Church in a special way.

Church.

The Marks
of the
Church
The 4 Marks of the Church
● The Nicene Creed names 4 characteristics or “marks” of the Church
○ The Church is one: she acknowledges one Lord, confesses one faith, is born of one Baptism, forms only
one Body, is given life by the one Spirit, for the sake of one hope , at whose fulfillment all divisions will
be overcome.
○ The Church is Holy: the Most Holy God is her author; Christ, her bridegroom, gave himself up to make
her holy; the Spirit of holiness gives her life. Since she still includes sinners, she is "the sinless one made
up of sinners." Her holiness shines in the saints; in Mary she is already all-holy.
○ The Church is catholic: she proclaims the fullness of the faith. She bears in herself and administers the
totality of the means of salvation. She is sent out to all peoples. She speaks to all men. She
encompasses all times. She is "missionary of her very nature"
○ The Church is apostolic. She is built on a lasting foundation: "the twelve apostles of the Lamb." She is
indestructible She is upheld infallibly in the truth: Christ governs her through Peter and the other
apostles, who are present in their successors, the Pope and the college of bishops. (CCC, 866-869)
One
● Every Christian shares the beliefs that we are all Children of God.
● The Foundation of the Church is the Holy Trinity, so the unity of the
Church reflects the Unity of the Trinity
● The Catholic Church is unified through the leadership of the Pope.
○ Our union with the Pope is a visible sign of our unity.
Holy
● To be holy is to be united with God.
● The Church with Christ as her head and the Holy SPirit to guide her strives
to be holy.
○ We strive for holiness, but we are not there yet - all members of the
Church are sinners whose personal sin affects the holiness of the
Church.
● The Church raises up men and women as examples of holiness to
encourage us - we call these women and men Saints.

○ Not everything said by the Pope and the bishops is infallible, but Catholics take their

firmly rooted in Scripture and Sacred Tradition.

The Catholic Church and Other Religions
● Salvation comes only through belief in Christ as the only Son of God.
○ Other religions, since they do not acknowledge this cannot be true means of
salvation.
○ However, many non-Christians live their faith more seriously than Christians
live our faith and some, like Jews and Muslims, worship the same God.
● We recognize the authentic search for God in other religions and those people
who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ or His Church but seek God
with a sincere heart and do His will, may achieve salvation.
● We have been directed by Christ to make His message known to the whole world,
but we cannot force people to accept it. (There were times in history when this
was done, but it was wrong.)
Judaism and Islam Abrahamic Religions
● We recognize that the Jewish faith already has a special relationship with God
through the Old Covenant.
○ They are God’s Chosen People, our spiritual ancestors.
○ Christianity rose out of Judaism - Jesus, Mary, all the Apostles were Jews.
● We recognize that the Muslims trace their origin back to Abraham and
acknowledge only one God.
○ They acknowledge Jesus as a prophet but not as the Son of God.

Catholics and Other Christians
● We view non-Catholic Christians as our brothers and sisters in Christ.
○ “Separated brethren” who lack full communion with us.
● Separations due to differences on:
○ Whether both Scripture and Tradition transmit God’ Revelation
○ The centrality of the Eucharist.
○ The Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist Symbolic
○ The Role of the Pope don't think has authority over then

● We are called to accept other Christians as
our brothers and sisters in Christ.
● We have been working since Vatican II to
strengthen the communion and ultimately
restore the unity between the Catholic
Church and other churches.
● The movement to restore Christian unity is
called Ecumanism.
Consider & Discuss

Have you ever discussed your beliefs/practices with a non-Catholic or

non-Christian friend? What differences stood out?

What are ways that the textbook says laity share in the priestly, prophetic, and
kingly offices of Christ? How do you see this applying to you in your life as a high
school student?

Marian Apparitions
● Throughout history there have been a number of time when it has been
reported that Mary has appeared to one or more members of the
faithful.
○ The Church does not require belief in any apparition or other private
revelation.
○ But some of these have been deemed “worthy of belief.”
● The three most famous are Guadalupe, Lourdes, & Fatima
Our Lady of Guadalupe
● Mexico, 16th Century
○ Mary appeared to a poor Aztec peasant
named St. Juan Diego telling to go to the
local bishop and have him build a shrine
to her on a local hill.
○ After the bishops lack of belief, Mary
provided Juan Diego with the famous
image as proof of her apparition
Our Lady of
Lourdes
● France, 19th Century
○ Mary appeared to a poor
girl named St. Bernadette
Soubirous numerous times
○ After praying the Rosary
with the girl, the woman
finallyidentified herself as
“The Immaculate
Conception”
○ A spring of water, credited
with miraculous healings
began to flow from the
grotto where Mary
appeared.
Our Lady of Fatima
● Portugal, 20th Century
○ Mary appeared to 3 young children.
○ Asked the children to pray the rosary
for world peace, for the end of World
War I, for sinners, and for the
conversion of Russia.
