Homework 4_Active Session (1)

The document outlines two homework questions for a Chemical Reaction Engineering course. The first question involves calculating the number of packed bed reactors needed to achieve a 0.55 fractional conversion of reactant A in a reversible reaction, while the second question focuses on determining the volume and heat exchange area for a system of three CSTRs operating at constant temperature. Both questions require the application of reaction kinetics and thermodynamics principles.

Question 1. (50 pts) The elementary reversible liquid phase reaction A + B C is carried
out adiabatically in packed bed reactors which are connected in series. These reactors have
enough catalyst packing to achieve 99% of the corresponding equilibrium conversion for this
reaction. There are interstage coolers between these reactors that cool the reaction medium
exiting from each reactor to 350 K. The molar fractions of A, B and inert solvent in the feed
to the first reactor are 0.25, 0.25 and 0.50, respectively. The temperature of the feed is 27 ℃
and the amount of A in the feed is 0.01 kmole/min. The heat capacities of the A, B, C and
inert solvent are 20.92, 8.37, 29.28 and 6.28 J/mole.℃, respectively. The heat of reaction at
273 K is -41839 J/mole A. The following fractional equilibrium conversion vs temperature
data is available for this reaction:

T (℃) Xe
75 1.00
125 0.96
175 0.75
225 0.41
275 0.19
325 0.11
375 0.05

What should be the number of packed bed reactors in series to achieve overall 0.55 fractional
conversion of A in this system?
Question 2. (50 pts) The endothermic elementary reaction is being proceed in a serially
connected 3 CSTR system. The conversion of A at the exit of the third CSTR is 0.95 and the
molar flow rate of R is 57 mol/min. All 3 CSTR has the same volume and the temperature in
these reactors is constant at 323 K. The inlet concentration of A to the first reactor is 1000
mol/m3 and the temperature of the inlet stream is 348 K. The temperature of the reactors is
kept constant by condensing the steam at 100 ℃ in the heating coils that surrounds each
reactor. What is the volume of these CSTR and the heat exchange area for each reactor?

Data: Rate constant of the reaction at 323 K = 0.004 s-1

Specific heat of reaction medium = 4 kJ/kg ℃

Density of reaction medium = 1 g/cm3

Heat of reaction = 150 kJ/mol

Overall heat transfer coefficient between the heating coil and the reactor = 1.5 kJ/m 2 ℃ s

Molecular weight of A = 100 g/mol
