E Reading
Read the article about a student called Priya Chopra, who helped her school friends to
improve their English, and choose the correct answer for each question.

Language club
Priya Chopra is 14 and she and her family recently moved to the UK. When she arrived, she could
speak only the few words and phrases of English that she’d picked up at school back in Delhi,
India. She initially struggled to understand what people were saying and found it equally
challenging to make herself understood in class. Fortunately, Priya was a quick learner and loved
studying, and she soon made progress in English.
However, Priya soon noticed that other students whose first language wasn’t English weren’t
having such quick success, particularly when it came to academic skills like writing essays and
giving presentations. The grades they were getting for their work were below average because of
this. Priya was concerned. She knew that these students were completely capable of doing the
work in their own language, but they just found it hard in English.
Priya decided to set up a language club, and appealed for volunteers to help her. She had soon
gathered a few students from across the school who were willing to get involved. Her idea was to
support students whose first language wasn’t English in developing their writing and speaking
skills. However, as her own English still required some work, she approached a teacher to provide
some interesting practice materials for the students to work on together.
Priya found that working on academic skills together helped not only the students who spoke
other languages, but those who spoke English very well, too. Although Priya knew that their
teachers always did their best to cover as much as possible in their classes, the additional practice
turned out to be very helpful. The students worked really hard to ensure the extra sessions, which
took place straight after school twice a week, were fun and engaged everyone.
Soon, everyone began to get better grades, and Priya and the other students were delighted.
Then Priya had another bright idea: how about setting up a language exchange? During the
practice sessions, she had noticed students chatting about their backgrounds, and she overheard
lots of questions being asked about other languages. ‘What’s this in Swahili?’ they might ask, or
‘How do you say … in Chinese?’ If she created a language exchange group, Priya thought, people
would have the chance to find out about other languages and cultures.
Like the language club, the exchange group was a great success. The teacher who helped Priya
believed that Priya should be recognized for the work she had done, and created a special award
for her. It was presented to Priya at the annual end-of-year ceremony. ‘I’m so grateful to be given
this,’ Priya said when she was given the award. ‘It means a lot, but I couldn’t have done it without
the other volunteers, so I receive this for them, too. I hope more people will become involved in
helping others achieve their potential now.’
