Surface Area Volume Notes

The document provides formulas for calculating the surface area and volume of prisms and cylinders, including examples such as rectangular and triangular prisms. It also includes conversion methods for area and volume units, as well as guidance on handling complex shapes by breaking them into basic solids. Key formulas include Volume = Base Area × Height for prisms and Volume = π × r² × h for cylinders.

Surface Area and Volume Notes

Surface Area and Volume of Prisms

A prism is a 3D shape with two identical, parallel bases and rectangular sides.

Volume of a Prism:

Volume = Base Area × Height

Surface Area of a Prism:

Surface Area = 2 × Base Area + Perimeter of base × Height

Common Prism Examples:

- Rectangular Prism (Cuboid)

Volume = l × w × h

Surface Area = 2(lw + lh + wh)

- Triangular Prism

Volume = (1/2) × b × h × L

Surface Area = Sum of areas of all faces

Surface Area and Volume of Cylinders

A cylinder has two parallel circular bases and a curved surface.

Surface Area and Volume Notes

Volume of a Cylinder:

Volume = π × r² × h

Surface Area of a Cylinder:

Surface Area = 2πr² + 2πrh

- 2πr² = area of two circular bases

- 2πrh = area of the curved surface

Conversions (cm² and cm³)

Area Units:

1 m² = 10,000 cm²

To convert cm² to m²: divide by 10,000

Example: 5000 cm² = 0.5 m²

Volume Units:

1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³

To convert cm³ to m³: divide by 1,000,000

Example: 250000 cm³ = 0.25 m³

Complex Shapes (Compound Solids)

Break the shape into basic solids (prisms, cylinders, etc.)

Surface Area and Volume Notes

Find volume or surface area of each part

Add or subtract as needed:

- Add volumes if combining solids

- Subtract if one part is removed (e.g., a hole)

Example:

A cylinder with a cone-shaped hole:

Total Volume = Volume of Cylinder − Volume of Cone
