n1 CONSUMER HEALTH
Consumer is a person who buys things or uses services.
Health, according to the dictionary, is the state of being free from illness or
injury. Consumer health refers to the decisions you make about the purchase
of products and the use of health information and services that will have a
direct effect on your health.
Health consumer is someone who examines health information in products
and services. The consumer is the one who purchases and utilizes the goods
and services. We are all consumers, and we acquire health information,
purchase health products, and avail health services to appraise, improve, and
maintain our health.
Health information is the data you get from the media and people, including
the professionals and agencies. It refers to the claims and facts about the
products and services. It is the information that people require to make wise
choices and decisions about the health or health of others (Galvez-Tan et al.,
2009).
Health Products are those substances, materials, or equipment prepared or
manufactured for you to buy and use in the maintenance of health and
treatment of diseases. Examples are foods, eyeglasses, medicine, cosmetics,
and others. Health Services refer to health information, actions, the
procedure of work furnished or supplied to help satisfy your needs and wants
as a consumer. These are services and things people do to and for other
people. Examples are medical consultation and treatment, using the
telephone, electricity, payment for transportation, haircut, newspapers, and
many more.
Consumer Health Education is the process of assisting you in acquiring
correct information and understanding to be able to make wise decisions about
certain health items or services.

Health information comes from two different sources: reliable

and unreliable sources. The consumers need to check and evaluate which
source is trustworthy and which is not.

Reliable Source
Reliable sources of information are mostly licensed professionals who studied
and dedicated their time and effort to master specific fields of expertise to
help provide accurate information.
Some Sources of Trusted Health Information:
● Family doctor
● School
● Medical specialist
● Local health officials of the barangays
● Health teachers or health workers
● Food and drug administration
● Philippine dental association
● National voluntary agencies like the Philippine Red Cross

On the other hand, unreliable sources of information and products are

those who are not experts in the health field.
Some Sources of Risky Health Information:
● Outdated culture and traditions
● Opinions
● Incomplete information
● Quack and pseudo healers (faith
healers)
● Unreputable internet sites
● Blogs and unreliable media testimonials
See the difference between reliable and unreliable? You can research more on this
topic. You can even ask the elders in your house about their experience and opinion
on these two. Before we continue, please answer this question: What will you consider
when buying health products or availing health services?
