C8

The document details the calculation of rainfall intensity and culvert design for a catchment area with a 50-year ARI. It includes parameters such as time of concentration, flow rate, and maximum headwater height, ultimately determining that outlet control governs the design. The calculations confirm that the culvert meets the required specifications for flow and velocity.

CALCULATION OUTPUT

Rainfall Intensity Calculation for Culvert Catchment (50 Years ARI)

For Culvert C8
CHAINAGE 277+500

Design Storm, ARI = 50 years

Catchment Area, A = 4.15 hectares

Time of Concentration, tc
Conversion Factor, F = 92.5
Overland Sheet Flow Path
Length, L = 0.204 km
Slope of stream flowpath, S = 0.034 m/km
tc = F.L = 32.18 mins tc = 32.18 mins
1/10 1/5
A S

Rainfall Intensity, I
From Table 13.A1, a = 7.1319
b = -0.6322
c = 0.0046
d = -0.0005
ln ARIItc = a + b (ln t) + c (ln t)2 + d (ln t)3 = 144.28 mm/hr I= 144.28 mm/hr

Culvert Design Example Calculation

Pipe Culvert
Culvert No. C8 Chainage : 277+500
Reference Calculation
Step 1 : Data

3
Flow, Q = 0.749 m /s ,C=0.45
Culvert length, L = 58 m

Natural waterway invert level:

Inlet = 8m
Outlet = 7.8 m

Acceptable upstream flood level = 14.22 m

Proposed pavement level = 14.72 m
Minimum freeboard = 0.3 m
Estimated downstream tailwater level = 8.1 m

Maximum headwater height, HWmax , is the lesser of:

i) 14.72 ― 0.3 ― 8 = 6.42 m
ii) 14.22 ― 8 = 6.22 m

Therefore maximum headwater height, HWmax = 6.22 m

Step 2 : Assume inlet control

= 2 m/s
Estimate the required waterway flow area by assuming flow velocity, V
2
Estimated flow area, A = Q/V = = 0.37 m

Trial of pipe to be used,

Type = RCP
Diameter, D = 1.5 m
Inlet type = 1
Numbers of culvert, N = 1

New Q based on pipe configuration,Q/N = 0.75 m3/s

3
From Chart 18.A2 with Q/N = 0.75 m /s
Use design chart 18.A2
HWi/D = 0.65 m
Hwi = 0.975 m < HWmax , acceptable
Step 3 : Check Outlet Control

Tail water, TW = 0.3 m <D

3
From Chart 18.A7 with Q/N = 0.75 m /s and D = 1.5 m

Critical depth, hc = 0.68 m <D

Use design chart 18.A7 Then D = 1.5

(hc + D)/2 = 1.09 m > TW

h0 is the larger of TW or (hc +D)/2,

h0 = 1.09 m

Calculate HW0 for outlet control:

Using Ke = 0.5 Square edge headwall/wingwall
3
From chart 18.A9 with Q/N = 0.75 m /s and D = 1.5 m
Use design chart 18.A9
H= 0.12 m

Fall of culvert inlet, Ls = 0.2 m

HW0 = (hc + D)/2 + H - Ls

1.01 m

HWi (Inlet Control) = 0.975 m HWi less than HWo

HW0 (Outlet Control) = 1.01 m

Therefore Outlet control governs

Step 4 : Check for velocity

A = ΠD2/4 = 1.77 m
2

S= 0.00345 = 0.34%

From Colebrook-White's Chart for k = 0.6mm

Use design chart 18.A12
3
Qf = 6.5 m /s
Vf = 3.5 m/s

If the culvert does not flow full it is necessary to use part-full flow relationship
Use design chart 18.A5
plotted in Design Chart 18.A5

Q/Qf = 0.115 and from Design Chart 18.A5

3
V/Vf = 0.42 and V = 1.47 m /s OK!

y /D = 0.42 and y = 0.63 less than hc
