QN The passage given below is followed by a set of five questions. Choose the most
appropriate answer to each question.
Today the import duty on a complete machine is 35% for all practical purposes, whereas the
import duty on raw materials and components ranges from 40% to 85%. The story does not end
here. After paying such high import duties on components, once a machine is made it suffers
excise duty of 5% to 10% ( including on the customs duty already paid ). At the time of sale the
machine tools suffers further taxation, i.e central sales tax or state sales tax which ranges from 4
to 16%. This much for tax angle.
Another factor which pushes the cost of manufacture of machine tools at a very high rate of
interest payable to banks which ranges upto 22%, as against 4% – 7% prevailing in advanced
countries.
The production of machine tools in India being not of the same scale as it is in other countries,
the price which India’s machine tools builders have to pay for the components is more or less
based othe n pattern of high pricing applicable to the prices of spares.
The above represents only a few of the extraneous reasons for the high cost of Indian machines.
The machine tool industry in India has an enviable record of very quick technology absorptions,
assimilation and development. There are a number of success stories about how machine tool
builders were of help at the most critical times.
It will be a pity in fact a tragedy if we allow this industry to die and disappear from the scene. It
is to be noted that India is at least 6000 km away from any dependable source of supply of
machine tools. The Government of India has always given a great
deal of importance to the development of small scale and medium scale industries. This industry
has also performed pretty well.
Today they are in need of help from India’s machine tool industry to enable them to produce
quality components at reduced costs. Is it anybody’s case that the needs of this fragile sector
(which needs tender care) will be met from 6000 km away. Then what is it that industry requests
from Government. It wants level playing fields.
In fact, all of us must have a deep introspection and recognise the fact that the machine tool
industry has a very special place in the country from the point of strategic and vital intersects of
the nation. Most important, it requests for the Govt.’s consideration and understanding.
51) According to the passage, assembling imported components into machine proves ultimately
A) cheaper than importing complete machine
B) costlier than importing machine
C) more cost effective than importing machine
D) on par with cost of imported machine
E) a very stupendous and unmanageable task
52) According to the passage, all the following factors are responsible for high cost of Indian
machines except
A) higher import duty on spares
B) excise duty
C) bank’s rate on interest on loans for manufacture
D) high profit margin expected by manufacturers
E) sales tax
53) If the bank’s rate of interest in India is made on par with the advanced countries, the cost of
manufacture of machine tools :
A) may go up by about 4% to 7%
B) may increase by about 22%
C) may decrease by about 4% to 7%
D) may decrease by about 15% to 18%
E) will remain the same due to import duty
54) The availability of Indian machine’s tool industry’s help to small scale industry is most
likely to result into
A) increase in demand of imported tools
B) deterioration in quality of component manufactured by them
C) further increase in custom duty on imported machines
D) enhancement in quality and quantity of their production at a cheaper cost.
E) severe competition among the small and medium scale industries.
55) Which of the following is true in the context of the passage?
A) India’s machine tool industry has a praise-worthy record of performance
B) In critical times, the machine tools builders allowed the industry to perish
C) In the case of machines, the excise duty is levied only on the cost price
D) India’s quantum of production of machine tools is more than that of other advanced countries.
E) None of these

32. Ans Let side of square be a. Then area = a2
Side of square after 25% increase is: 1.25a. Hence area = 1.25 a * 1.25 a = 1.5625 a2
Hence % change in area is (New area - old area)/(old area) * 100 = 56.25%

33..Ans Let x kg of Rs 9.3kg type rice and y kg of Rs 10.80 type rice be mixed.
ie, x kg of Rs9.3 per kg + ykg of Rs 10.8 per kg = (x + y) kgs of Rs 10 per kg
ie, (9.3 * x + 10.8 * y) = 10 (x + y)
Solving the equation x/y = 8/7

35. Ans Speed of A = a m/s ; B = b m/s ; C = c m/s
Time taken by A to complete the race = t m/s
Speed = distance / time
a = 3000 / t
b = 3000 / (t+50), because b should take 50s more to complete the race.
c = (3000 - 1000) / t, because C was 1000 m behind when A finished 3000m in ts, ie C covered
2000m in ts.
and Given c = 8m/s
Solving this we get, b=10m/s, a=12m/s

concentrations x, y are mixed then, final concentration = mx+nym+nmx+nym+n
Take 1 unit of gold and x units of copper.

⇒x=23⇒x=23
1×19+x×91+x=15⇒19+9x=15+15x1×19+x×91+x=15⇒19+9x=15+15x

So they are to be mixed in the ratio 1 : x = 1:231:23 or 3 : 2

48. Answer: C
Explanation:
Let ab=cd=kab=cd=k. Then a = bk and c=dk
ma+ncmb+nd=mbk+ndkmb+nd=k[mb+ndmb+nd]ma+ncmb+nd=mbk+ndkmb+nd=k[mb+ndmb+nd] = k
But k=abk=ab So the required ratio = a : b

49.Answer: B
Explanation:
Let Q + R got 5 units then P gets 2 units.
P : (Q + R)= 2:5
But total P + Q + R = 7 units. So,
P's share =Rs.(1050×27)(1050×27)=Rs.300

50. Explanation: Answer: B

25A+40=27B+20=917C+10=x25A+40=27B+20=917C+10=x
A = 52(x−40),B=72(x−20)52(x−40),B=72(x−20) and c = 179(x−10)179(x−10)
Given that 52(x−40)+72(x−20)52(x−40)+72(x−20) + 179(x−10)=600179(x−10)=600
45x−1800+63x−1260+34x−34018=60045x−1800+63x−1260+34x−34018=600
45x - 1800 + 63x -1260 + 34x - 340 =10800
142x=14200 or x = 14200142=10014200142=100
Hence, A's share = 52(100−40)=Rs.15052(100−40)=Rs.150

56. Explanation
GetResult is final in the super class. It will create a compilation error when trying to override it.
57. Explanation
Reference variables array1 and a3 refers to same long object. When object is modified in
method method(), it is ineffect modifiyng the object referred by array1. Hence answer is "15 15".
