1. SCOPE
1.1 This s p e c i f i c a t i o n covers s t r u c t u r a l steelwork g e n e r a l l y o r b u i 1dings and o t h e r
structures, except cranes and road and r a i l bridges.
I t includes c e r t a i n sundry items such as s t a i r s , ladders, h a n d r a i l i n g and open g r i d
f 1o o r i ng.
NOTE: Should a s p e c i f i c a t i o n be r e q u i r e d f o r such sundry tems o n l y and n o t f o r
s t r u c t u r a l s t e e l , r e f e r t o SABS 1200 HA.

1.2 The s p e c i f i c a t i o n does n o t cover r o o f and side cladding (see SABS 1200 HB) o r
c o r r o s i o n p r o t e c t i o n o f s t r u c t u r a l steelwork (see SABS 1200 HC).

2. INTERPRETATIONS
2.1 SUPPORTING SPECIFICATIONS. Where t h i s s p e c i f i c a t i o n i s r e q u i r e d f o r a p r o j e c t , t h e
f o l l o w i n g s p e c i f i c a t i o n s s h a l l , i n t e r a l i a , form p a r t o f t h e c o n t r a c t document
(NOTE: Item (b) may o r may n o t b e bound i n t h e document):
a) P r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n ;
b ) SABS 1200 AH, SABS 1200 A o r SABS 1200 AA, as appropriate.

2.2 APPLICATION. This s p e c i f i c a t i o n contains clauses t h a t a r e g e n e r a l l y a p p l i c a b l e t o


s t r u c t u r a l steelwork construction. I n t e r p r e t a t i o n s and v a r i a t i o n s o f t h e s p e c i f i c a -
t i o n a r e s e t o u t i n P o r t i o n 2 o f t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n (see 2.1).
2.3 DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS. For t h e purposes o f t h i s s p e c i f i c a t i o n , t h e d e f i n i -
t i o n s and abbreviations g i v e n i n SABS 1200 AH, SABS 1200 A o r SABS 1200 AA, as
applicable, and t h e f o l l o w i n g d e f i n i t i o n s s h a l l apply:
Grade o f a b o l t . A s t r e n g t h designation c o n s i s t i n g o f two numbers (separated by a
d 6 q--ili-T4 e i r s number being approximately one-hundredth o f t h e minimum s p e c i f i e d
t e n s i l e s t r e n g t h i n megapascals and t h e second being approximately one-tenth o f t h e
r a t i o (expressed as a percentage) between t h e s t r e s s a t permanent s e t o f 0,2 X
( y i e l d s t r e s s ) and t h e minimum t e n s i l e strength. (For example, Grade 10.9 i n d i c a t e s
a nominal t e n s i l e s t r e n g t h o f 1 000 MPa and a nominal permanent s e t s t r e s s (0,2 %)
o f 900 MPa . The l e t t e r S , when added t o t h e grade designation, e.g. Grade 8.8S,
denotes a m e t r i c high-strength s t r u c t u r a l b o l t w i t h a heavy s e r i e s hexagon head.)
Normal temperature. A temperature t h a t exceeds 15 "C b u t does n o t exceed 32 "C .
3. MATERIALS
3.1 STRUCTURAL STEEL
3.1.1 Subject t o t h e p r o v i s i o n s o f 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4, s t e e l used i n t h e f a b r i c a t i o n of
s t r u c t u r a l steelwork s h a l l comply w i t h t h e requirements o f SABS 1431 f o r t h e grade
o f s t e e l s p e c i f i e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n o r s t a t e d i n t h e drawings. Steel of
commercial q u a l i t y may be used i n t h e f a b r i c a t i o n o f items such as s t a i r s , ladders,
handt-ails, open g r i d f l o o r i n g and s i m i l a r sundry steelwork items.
Unless
i) otherwise expl ic i t l y approved; o r
ii)adequate r e s i s t a n c e t o b r i t t l e f r a c t u r e can be demonstrated; o r
iii)b r i t t l e f r a c t u r e w i l l n o t be a c r i t i c a l design consideration;
t h e m a t e r i a l o f welded elements s u b j e c t d u r i n g e r e c t i o n t o t e n s i l e stresses
exceeding 15 % o f t h e s p e c i f i e d minimum y i e l d s t r e s s o f t h e s t e e l , o r subject i n
t h e completed s t r u c t u r e t o t e n s i l e stresses under any combination o f f o r c e s s h a l l
comply w i t h t h e f o l l o w i n g requirements:
a) The thickness o f s t e e l s of Grades 300WA, 350WA and 450WA s h a l l n o t exceed
40 mm .
b) The thickness o f s t e e l s of Grades 300WC, 300WDD, 350WC, 350WDD, 450WC and 450WDD

s t e e l tab1 es.
3.2 SPECIAL STEELS. Steel o f a type n o t covered by SABS 1431 and used i n s t r u c t u r a l
elements s h a l l b e such t h a t i t complies w i t h t h e f o l l o w i n g requirements and with
t h e a p p l i c a b l e requirements o f t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n :
a) Unless otherwise specified, t h e y i e l d s t r e s s s h a l l n o t exceed 450 MPa;
b ) t h e r a t i o o f t h e t e n s i l e s t r e n g t h t o t h e guaranteed y i e l d strength, determined
i n accordance w i t h SABS 1431, s h a l l b e a t l e a s t 1,2:1,0;
c ) t h e e l o n g a t i o n (on a gauge l e n g t h o f 5,65 dAo mm), determined i n accordance w i t h
SABS 1431, s h a l l be a t l e a s t 15 % .
(Ao = cross-sectional area o f t e n s i l e t e s t specimen, mm2)
3.3 STEEL USED FOR COLD-FORMED SECTIONS. A l l s t e e l used i n t h e manufacture o f c o l d -
formed sections f o r use as s t r u c t u r a l members i n b u i l d i n g s h a l l comply w i t h 3.1
and, i n a d d i t i o n , s h a l l have a minimum y i e l d s t r e s s o f a t l e a s t 200 MPa .
3.4 STRUCTURAL TUBULAR AND HOLLOW STEEL SECTIONS. A l l s t e e l used i n t h e manufacture o f
hollow sections s h a l l comply w i t h t h e requirements o f SABS 1431 o r SABS 657:
P a r t I . Where so specified, special s t e e l s shal 1 be used.

3.5 WELDING CONSlJMABLES


3.5.1 Electrodes. We1 d i ng electrodes s h a l l comply w i t h t h e appl i c a b l e requirements o f
ABS 455 o r such o t h e r standard as may be agreed upon by t h e Engineer and t h e
Contractor.
3.5.2 Stora e and Handlin . The storage and handling o f a l l consumables s h a l l be i n
h w d r e q u i rements o f BS 5135.
3.5.3 Q u a l i t y . Welding consumables, i n a d d i t i o n t o complying w i t h t h e requirements o f
T ! Z r j - - s h a l l be such t h a t they produce weld metal t h a t , when t e s t e d i n accordance
w i t h t h e a p p l i c a b l e method g i v e n i n BS 709, has a minimum y i e l d s t r e s s and minimum
t e n s i l e s t r e n g t h a t l e a s t equal t o those o f t h e parent metal.

3.6 BOLTS, NUTS AND WASHERS


3.6.1 B o l t s and Nuts [ o t h e r than F r i c t i o n - a r i D ) . B o l t s and nuts o t h e r than f i t t e d b o l t s
and o t h e r than b o l t s and n i t S f o r f r i c t i d n - g r i p j o i n t s s h a l l comply w i t h t h e
requirements o f SABS 135, SABS 136 o r SABS 1143 (as a p p l i c a b l e ) f o r t h e t y p e shown
on t h e drawings o r scheduled. Nuts s h a l l be o f a t l e a s t t h e s t r e n g t h grade
appropriate t o t h e grade o f b o l t o r o t h e r threaded element with which they a r e
used.
F i t t e d b o l t s s h a l l comply with t h e r e l e v a n t requirements o f SABS 136.
Except as p r o v i d e d f o r i n 3.6.2, washers f o r b o l t s and n u t s s h a l l comply w i t h t h e
r e l e v a n t requirements o f SABS 1149.
3.6.2 F r i c t i o n - r i Fasteners. High-strength f r i c t i o n - g r i p b o l t s and associated n u t s and
washers s a piTe--r comp y w i t h t h e r e l e v a n t requirements o f SABS 1282 and s h a l l be
capable o f being r e l i a b l y t i g h t e n e d t o t h e a p p l i c a b l e l o a d recommended i n SABS 094.
Other types o f f r i c t i o n - g r i p fastener may a l s o b e used s u b j e c t t o approval and pro-
vided t h a t they have mechanical p r o p e r t i e s n o t i n f e r i o r t o b o l t s complying w i t h t h e
r e l e v a n t requirements o f SABS 1282 and t h a t they a r e capable o f b e i n g r e l i a b l y ten-
sioned t o t h e a p p l i c a b l e l o a d recommended i n SABS 094.

3.7 MILD STEEL RIVETS. M i l d s t e e l r i v e t s s h a l l comply w i t h t h e r e l e v a n t requirements o f


SABS 435.

4. PLANT
4.1 PLANT. P l a n t and equipment used i n t h e handling, f a b r i c a t i o n and e r e c t i o n o f
steelwork s h a l l comply w i t h t h e requirements o f t h e Machinery and Occupational
Safety Act, 1983 (Act 6 o f 1983), o r t h e Mines and Works Act, 1956 (Act 27 o f
1956), as a p p l i c a b l e . Handling and l i f t i n g p l a n t s h a l l have enough c a p a c i t y t o
ensure t h a t steelwork i s placed i n i t s f i n a l p o s i t i o n w i t h o u t d i s t o r t i o n o r undue
s t r e s s i n g o f members.
The use o f cranes, l i f t i n g devices, s a f e t y b e l t s , harnesses, nets and barricades
s h a l l comply w i t h t h e recommendations given i n BS 5531.
Pneumatic o r h y d r a u l i c equipment s h a l l be used f o r t h e d r i v i n g o f r i v e t s .
5. CONSTRUCTION
5.1 DRAWINGS AND SHOP DETAILS
5.1.1 Desi n Drawin s. The Engineer's drawings w i l l i n c l u d e a general arrangement o f t h e
&E!€ure i n d i c a t i n g a l l s t r u c t u r a l member sizes and special connections
and w i l l be s u f f i c i e n t l y comprehensive t o a l l o w t h e d e t a i l i n g o f a l l connections.
Dimension f i g u r e s on t h e drawings s h a l l be deemed t o be c o r r e c t , even i f t h e
drawings a r e n o t t o scale. No dimension s h a l l b e obtained from a drawing by
scal i n g . Where necessary, t h e a r c h i t e c t u r a l drawings w i 11 a1 so be provided.
5.1.2 Contractor Provides Sho D e t a i l s . Where t h e Contractor i s responsible f o r preparing
s h o p e t a i l s . t h e EnginEer w i l l issue t o t h e Contractor, w i t h i n t h e p e r i o d s t a t e d
i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n a f t e r t h e date of t h e award o f t h e c o n t r a c t , design
drawings as s p e c i f i e d i n 5.1.1 and, i n a d d i t i o n , t h e necessary design c a l c u l a t i o n s

Immediately on r e c e i p t of such drawings and c a l c u l a t i o n s , t h e Contractor s h a l l
s a t i s f y himself t h a t t h e drawings c o n t a i n a l l t h e i n f o r m a t i o n r e q u i r e d f o r t h e pre-
p a r a t i o n o f h i s own shop d e t a i l s and supporting c a l c u l a t i o n s . These shop d e t a i l
drawings and supporting c a l c u l a t i o n s , together with any o t h e r necessary drawings,
s h a l l be submitted i n d u p l i c a t e t o t h e Engineer f o r approval a t l e a s t 1 week ( O r
such o t h e r p e r i o d as may be s t a t e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n ) b e f o r e commence-
ment o f f a b r i c a t i o n . I n preparing t h e shop d e t a i l s , t h e Contractor s h a l l ensure
compliance w i t h t h e a r c h i t e c t u r a l drawings w i t h respect t o items such as cladding.
The C o n t r a c t o r ' s drawings s h a l l b e complete i n every respect (i n c l u d i ng we1 d i ng
d e t a i l s , which s h a l l b e f u l l y described i n c l u d i n g d e t a i l s o f shop s p l i c e s ) and
s h a l l be checked by t h e Contractor p r i o r t o submission. One copy o f each drawing
w i l l be r e t a i n e d by t h e Engineer and, within 1 week ( o r such o t h e r p e r i o d as may be
s t a t e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n ) o f t h e date o f r e c e i p t by t h e Engineer, t h e
o t h e r copy w i l l b e returned t o t h e Contractor with t h e Engineer's comments o r W r i t -
t e n approval, as t h e case may be.
Before t h e commencement of f a b r i c a t i o n , t h e Contractor s h a l l o b t a i n from t h e
Engineer approval of t h e shop d e t a i l s , i n w r i t i n g . The approval g i v e n b y t h e
Engineer r e l a t e s t o s t r u c t u r a l adequacy and does n o t absolve t h e Contractor from
r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r dimensional accuracy.
5.1.3 En i n e e r Provides Shop D e t a i l s . Where t h e Engineer undertakes t o prepare shop
deT-aircwings e win-ie general arrangement and marking and shop d e t a i l
drawings, togethehr with necessary b o l t and m a t e r i a l s l i s t s and cladding d e t a i l s , t o
t h e Contractor a t agreed dates t h a t w i l l enable t h e Contractor t o adhere t o t h e
agreed program.
The r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r t h e dimensional accuracy o f these drawings s h a l l r e s t w i t h
t h e Engineer; t h e Contractor w i l l , however, be r e q u i r e d t o examine t h e drawings
and, should any f i g u r e o r w r i t i n g be i n d i s t i n c t o r should any d e s c r i p t i o n be ambi-
guous, he s h a l l apply immediately t o t h e Engineer f o r c l a r i f i c a t i o n .
5.1.4 V a r i a t i o n s from Drawin s and Sections. Except where otherwise authorized i n w r i t i n g
i 5 j - t t i T E n ~ K e ~ a ~ ensure h a - t~h a t t h e work i s c a r r i e d o u t s t r i c t l y
i n accordance w i t h t h e drawings supplied t o t h e Contractor by t h e Engineer, o r
s u p p l i e d by t h e Contractor and approved by t h e Engineer.
Steel sections s h a l l be provided as s p e c i f i e d on t h e drawings except t h a t s u b s t i t u -
t i o n w i l l be p e r m i t t e d with t h e Engineer's p r i o r approval. Where t h e Contractor
wishes t o make a s u b s t i t u t i o n , he s h a l l submit h i s reasons and a l t e r n a t i v e propo-
sals i n writing.
5.2 FABRICATION
5.2.1 General. A1 1 s t r u c t u r a l s t e e l s h a l l , b o t h b e f o r e and a f t e r f a b r i c a t i o n ,

of-the-nut t i g h t e n i n g method s h a l l be used. Once f r i c t i o n - g r i p b o l t s o f Grade 10.9s
and galvanized f r i c t i o n - g r i p b o l t s o f Grade 8.8s have been tensioned, they s h a l l

g r o u i i n g m e d d i n g w i l l be c a r r i e d o u t by o t h e r s t o t h e Engineer's s p e c i f i c a t i o n
and approval. The Contractor s h a l l ensure t h a t a l l g r o u t i n g has been completed
b e f o r e cladding and o t h e r l o a d i n g i s applied.
5.6.2 Preparation. The Contractor s h a l l ensure t h a t no bedding o r g r o u t i n g i s c a r r i e d o u t
Lj-o€hFrFuntil enough o f t h e s t r u c t u r e has been a l i g n e d or, f o r m u l t i s t o r e y
b u i l d i n g s , a s u f f i c i e n t number o f bottom lengths o f stanchions have been aligned,
l e v e l l e d and plumbed and adequately braced by t h e Contractor by means o f o t h e r
s t r u c t u r a l components t h a t have been l e v e l l e d and a r e securely h e l d by t h e i r per-

7. TESTING
7.1 TEST CERTIFICATES. Where r e q u i r e d i n terms o f t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n , t e s t cer-
t i f i c a t e s , o r c a s t a n a l y s i s c e r t i f i c a t e s ( o t both), p e r t a i n i n g t o t h e s t e e l t o be
used s h a l l be supplied t o t h e Engineer by t h e Contractor.

7.2 INSPECTION. The Engineer s h a l l have access a t a l l reasonable times t o a l l places


where t h e work i s being c a r r i e d o u t and s h a l l b e provided with a l l t h e necessary
f a c i l i t i e s f o r i n s p e c t i o n d u r i n g a l l stages o f construction.

7.3 INSPECTION AND TESTING OF WELDS. The Contractor s h a l l examine welds as f o l l o w s :


a ) Visual examination o f a l l welds t o check t h a t
1 ) t h e r e a r e no uneven l e g lengths and t h a t t h e r e i s no cracking o r unacceptable

8. MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT


8,l BASIC PRINCIPLES
8.1.1 Work i n v o l v i n g s t e e l members and platework w i l l be measured b y mass o f s t e e l .
Sundry items w i l l be measured by number, mass o r area, depending on t h e n a t u r e o f
t h e i t e m (see 8 . 1 . 2 ) .
8.1.2 Where t h e r e i s considerable r e p e t i t i o n o f a r t i c l e s o f t h e same d e s c r i p t i o n and mass
(e.g. ladders, foundation b o l t s , frames, loose c l e a t s , etc.) t h a t a r e measured by
mass, t h e number o f such a r t i c l e s and t h e mass o r length, as applicable, of each

8.2 COMPUTATION OF QUANTITIES
8.2.1 The mass o f steelwork w i l l be c a l c u l a t e d on t h e b a s i s o f t h e nominal mass p e r u n i t
l e n g t h as s t a t e d i n t h e South A f r i c a n I n s t i t u t e o f Steel Construction's s t r u c t u r a l
s t e e l t a b l e s o r , where n o t so stated, t h e mass w i l l be c a l c u l a t e d from a s t e e l den-
s i t y o f 7 850 kg/m3 . The mass o f f i t t i n g s such as c l e a t s , gussets, battens and
s t i f f e n e r s w i l l be added t o t h e mass o f t h e members.
8.2.2 Tolerances f o r r o l l i n g margins and o t h e r p e r m i s s i b l e d e v i a t i o n s w i l l be neglected.
No deductions w i l l be made f o r holes f o r fasteners o r f o r m i l l i n g o r planing, and
no a d d i t i o n s w i l l be made f o r r o l l i n g margin, waste, weld metal o r shop fasteners.
8.2.3 Unless otherwise stated, gussets w i l l be measured on t h e b a s i s o f t h e minimum
encloslng rectangle. Each large, shaped p l a t e such as a roof, a bottom t o a c i r -
