Sport or sports includes all forms of

competitive physical activity or games

which, through casual or organized
participation, aim to use, maintain or
improve physical ability and skills while
providing enjoyment to participants, and in
some cases, entertainment for spectators.
Objective of the Game
The objective of softball is to hit the ball with a
bat before the player tries to run around an
infield with four bases. Once a player manages to
get right round without being given out a run is
scored. The team with the most runs at the end of
the game is deemed the winner.
A run in softball is when a player crosses home
plate and scores a point for the team.
A home run is a special type of hit where the
batter hits the ball so far that they can round
all the bases and SCORE IN ONE PLAY—usually
by hitting the ball over the outfield fence.
So, all home runs are runs, but not all runs are
home runs.

Rules of the Game
THE GAME
1. The game consists of nine to ten players
each team.
2. There are two divisions of playing field: the
infield and the outfield.
3. The lines connecting each base are 60 feet
apart, creating a diamond shape. The inside
portion of it is the infield and the outside
portion is the outfield.
4. The official softball events consist of seven
innings.
5. The first team to bat is the visiting team which consumes half
of the inning. After three players are out, the home team uses the
other half of the inning until three members of the team is out.
This completes one inning.
6. Unlike other sports, there is no time limit for each inning. The
game continues as long as the team scores without the three
players being out. If both teams are tied in one score after the
seven innings, an extra inning will be applied.
BASE RUNNING
1. The runners should run to the bases in order, from first to the home
plate.
2. The only base that a player can overrun is the first base. With the
other bases, you may be tagged and called out if you are off to the
assigned base.
3. A runner can only lead off the base once the pitchers already throw
the ball.
4. If there is a fly ball and the ball is caught, the runner positioned into a
base should tag that base first before going to the next base.
5. If there is a base runner on the other base, one player is not
allowed to go over his or her position.
6. Stealing a based is not allowed.
7. A runner is considered out when:
a. tagged by the opponents’ ball before reaching the base
b. the ball reaches first the first base defender before running
player
c. the player runs three feet away from the base line and tagged.
PITCHING
1. Both feet of the pitcher should be on the ground and allowed only
to step one foot forward before pitching.
2. Underhand pitching/throwing is used.
3. The ball should be held with both hands at the start of the pitch.
BATTING
1. The batter’s order must be followed strictly on the duration of the
game.
2. The batter is out if and when:
a. there are already three strikes thrown
b. a fly ball is caught
c. the batter is standing outside the batter’s box
Skills used in Softball
Throwing – the act of passing the ball to a teammate. There are two
types of throwing:

• Underhand throwing is the act

of passing the ball below the
shoulder level.
• Overhead throwing is the act of
passing the ball by swinging
your arm just above the
shoulder.
• Fielding- defensive act of
catching the ball after a
successful was made.
• It could be a ground or a fly ball
• Batting – the act of hitting
the ball by swinging the arms
backward and hitting the
incoming ball by swinging it
again toward the area of the
ball origin.
• Catching – the process of
receiving the ball from a pitch
or throw.
• Good coordination is
necessary for this kind of
skill.
1. Pitcher – the one who throws the ball toward a batter which is
positioned at the middle of the diamond.
2. Catcher – the player who controls the pitcher’s throw and
positioned at the back of the home plate . The catcher and the
pitcher are the leaders of the game.
3. First Baseman – the player that is positioned on the right side of
the diamond next to the catcher’s position to his/her right. The
major role of the first baseman is to receive throws from other
defensive players in order to get a force play at first base.
4. Second baseman - the one who is in the middle of the diamond next to
first base. He/She in control between the gap from the first base going
to him/her.
5. Third Baseman – this player takes care of the hit that travels the third
base. He/she is positioned next to the shortstop.
6. Shortstop – the player whose position is in between the second
baseman and the third baseman. He/She is in control of the ball
travelling between the second and the third base.
7. Outfielders – the players who cover the position outside the diamond
or the field. They take care of the ball that passes through the diamond.
