Root locus plot- TUTORIAL Sheet

Q1-Sketch the root locus plot for the system given below with K as a variable parameter and show that
the loci of complex roots are part of a circle with(-1,0) as center radius=√2. Is the system stable for all
values of K? if not, determine the range of k for stable system operation. Find also the marginal value of
K which causes sustained oscillation and the frequency of these oscillations. From the root locus plot,
determine the value of K such that the resulting system has a settling time of 4 seconds. What are the
corresponding values of the roots?

𝐾(𝑠+1)
G(s)H(s)= 𝑠(𝑠−1) Answer:(( 1<K<∞) , sustained oscillation=1 , K=2.977)

Q2-Draw the complete root locus for

𝐾
G(s)H(s)=𝑠(𝑠+2)(𝑠+4)

From the root locus plot, find the range of values of K for which the system will have damped oscillatory
response. Also , determine the value of K for a damping ratio of ζ =0.5. with this value of K, find the
closed-loop transfer function. Answer: ((0<K<14),K=8.19)

Q3- A unity feedbacksystem has an open loop transfer function

𝐾
G(s)H(s)=𝑠2 (𝑠+2)

(a)By sketching a root locus plot, show that the system is unstable for all values of K.

(b)Add a zero at s=-a(0≤a<2)and show that the addition of a zero stabilizes the system.

(c) If a=1, sketch the root locus plot, Find the value of K which gives the greatest damping ratio for the
oscillatory mode. Find also the value of this damping ratio and the corresponding undamped natural
frequency. Answer: (4.62 , natural freq=1.9)

Q4- show that a part of the root locus of a system with

𝐾(𝑠+3)
G(s)H(s)= 𝑠(𝑠+2)

Is circular find ζmin, the corresponding value of K and the poles of the closed loop transfer function for
this value of K. also find the range of values of K for the system to be (a)overdamped (b) critically
damped (c)underdamped. Answer: (K=1.92, (a)0<K ,(b) K=0.573,7.464 (c) K=0.573<K<7.464)

Q5- Show that the root loci for a control system with
𝐾(s2 +2𝑠+10)
G(s)H(s)= (s2 +6s+10)

Are part of the circle centered at the origin with radius=√10. Determine the range of values of K for
which the system is (a )overdamped (b)critically damped (c) underdamped.

these roots? Answer: ( K=48 , s=-4,-4,-4)

Q9-For a unity feedback system, the open loop transfer function is given by
𝐾
G(s)H(s)=
𝑠(𝑠+2)(s2+6s+25)

(a)sketch the root locus for 0<K<∞.

(b)At what value of K, the system becomes unstable. Answer(k=11.55)

(c)At this point of instability, determine the frequency of oscillation of the system.

Q10- Draw the complete root locus of the system with the open –loop transfer function
