Mete 362 - PS 1 (P4)

This document is a problem set for a Finite Element Analysis course at Cebu Institute of Technology – University, specifically for mechanical engineering students. It includes a series of engineering problems related to stress analysis, pressure vessels, and material properties, requiring students to use their ID numbers to calculate specific random numbers for their solutions. Students are instructed to provide complete solutions and box their final answers.

METE 362C – FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA)

PROBLEM SET #1

NAME OF STUDENT:________________________________ ID #_________________ Date:________________________

Random Number – based on students ID Number; Ex. 23-1047-888

RN1- number based from the fourth digit; RN1 – 7401
RN2- number based from the third digit; RN2 – 4017
RN3- number based from the second digit; RN3 – 0471

Instruction:Solve the following problems with complete solutions using your ID# as
illustrated above. Make sure your solutions are written neatly in the space provided
below. Box your final answer.

1. A cylindrical steel pressure vessel 400 mm in diameter with a wall thickness

of (20 + 0.00025*RN1) mm, is subjected to an internal pressure of (4.5 +
0.00025*RN2) Mpa. (a) Calculate the tangential and longitudinal stresses in
the steel. (b) To what value may the internal pressure be increased if the
stress in the steel is limited to (120 + 0.00025*RN3) MN/m2? (c) If the
internal pressure were increased until the vessel burst, sketch the type of
fracture that would occur.

2. The wall thickness of a 4-ft-diameter spherical tank is 5/16 in. (A)Calculate

the allowable internal pressure if the stress is limited to (8000 + 0.0003*RN3)
psi. (B)Calculate the minimum wall thickness for a cylindrical vessel that is
to carry a gas at a pressure of (1400 + 0.0003*RN2) psi.

3. A steel rod having a cross-sectional area of (300 + 0.00035*RN1) mm2 and a

length of (150 + 0.00035*RN2) m is suspended vertically from one end. It
supports a tensile load of (20 + 0.00035*RN3) kN at the lower end. If the unit
mass of steel is 7850 kg/m3 and E = 200 × 103 MN/m2, find the total elongation
of the rod.

4. Two cylindrical rods, one of steel and the other of brass, are joined at C
and restrained by rigid supports at A and E. For the loading shown and knowing
that Es = (200 + 0.0004*RN1) GPa and Eb = (105 + 0.0004*RN2) GPa, determine
(a) the reactions at A and E, (b) thedeflection of point C.?

5. A (1 + 0.00045*RN3)-in. square was scribed on the side of a large steel

pressure vessel. After pressurization the biaxial stress condition at the
square is as shown. Knowing that E = 29 x 106 psi and v = (0.30 + 0.000045*RN2),
determine the change in length of (a) side AB, (b) side BC, (c) diagonal AC.
