DELPHOS Doug Geary finished 13-10
in 2011, his first season as head varsity base-
ball coach at Jefferson, after serving six years
as the junior varsity head coach.
Four major cogs from that team are gone
due to graduation but a lucky number seven
as in returning starters are back to try
and help Geary do even better in his sopho-
more campaign for the Red and White hard-
ballers who ended up 5-4 in the Northwest
Conference and lost to Kalida 4-3 in 11
innings the Division III district semifinals.
Senior Curtis Miller (third year; first
baseman/pitcher; .347 batting average, .459
on-base percentage, .555 slugging percent-
age, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 19
runs batted in, 19 runs scored, 12 walks,
8 stolen bases; 1-1, 5 saves, 24 strikeouts,
0.32 earned run average) leads the veterans
after his second-team NWC honors from a
year ago, along with second-teamer Drew
Kortokrax (junior pitcher/outfielder; .243
BA, 5 2Bs, 11 RBIs; 3-3, 1.94 ERA, 44 Ks)
and senior honorable-mention NWC pick
Tony George (third year; shortstop/second
baseman/pitcher; .315 BA, .438 SLG%, 19
runs, 6 2Bs, 15 RBIs, 15 SBs; 2-2, 5.86 ERA,
24 Ks).
Justin Rode (senior catcher; third year;
.271 BA, 13 RBIs), Kyle Anspach (senior
outfielder), Mike Joseph (senior centerfield-
er/pitcher; 1-0, 4.66 ERA) and multi-purpose
sophomore Ross Thompson (shortstop/sec-
ond baseman/pitcher; 3 2Bs, 11 RBIs) also
return for a senior-laden Wildcat baseball
crew.
However, four players exhausted their
eligibility from last spring, including third-
year Nik Moore (shortstop/second baseman;
honorable mention; .338 BA, .466 OB%,
5 2Bs, 22 runs, 8 SBs; 1-1, 0.00 ERA in
relief), third-year Nick Cook (second base-
man/pitcher; .300 BA, 3 2Bs; 1-1, 2.70 ERA,
19 Ks), pitcher/first baseman Ben Babcock
(second year; .291 BA; 2-0, 6.26 ERA) and
rightfielder Jordan Vorst (second year).
Two other letterwinners expected to make
the jump into full-time service for the 2012
Wildcats are senior pitcher/third baseman
Jeff Schleeter (.241 BA; 2-1, 5.25 ERA) and
senior outfielder Evan Neubert.
We return the core of a pitching staff
that posted a 3.12 earned run average, which
should be a strength, Geary noted.
However, that may not be happening right
off the bat due to some injuries.
Having Curtis and Drew unavailable for
pitching at the beginning of the season due
to dinged-up shoulders, well be looking
for guys like Jeff, Tony and Mike to step up
early on and give us some solid innings,
Geary said.
Still, the Red and White will need to find
ways score runs especially after a change
in the bats the team will use to help make
that expected pitching strength stand up; the
Wildcats finished 2011 with a .264 batting
average and scored 6.2 runs per game.
Offensively, well have to find ways to
manufacture runs. Sitting and waiting for
a 3-run home run with these new BBCOR
Geary hopes 7 a lucky number in his sophomore campaign
Jefferson baseball varsity 2012
The varsity baseball team for Jefferson this season has, seated from left, Jeff
Schleeter, Evan Neubert, Mike Joseph, Curtis Miller, Jordan Rode, Tony George
and Kyle Anspach; and standing, assistant coach Clay Erman, Drew Kortokrax,
Dylan Haehn, Aach Ricker, Zach Kimmett, Ross Thompson, Austin Jettinghoff, Curt
Wollenhaupt, manager Cody Hilvers and head coach Doug Geary. Assistant coach
Rusty Thompson is absent.
bats, it just wont happen as frequently as
in the past, Geary explained. With those
changes, hitting fundamentals have been a
priority in 2012.
They will also need to shore up the
defense, especially the middle infield, to help
out the pitching staff and allow the offense
to work its way into the season. Last years
defense committed 55 errors and allowed 46
of the 127 runs scored against them to be
unearned.
We lost our middle infield to graduation
in Nik and Nick, so filling those holes are a
must, Geary commented.
The remainder of the 14-man varsity ros-
ter has junior Zach Ricker (infielder/pitcher),
junior Zach Kimmett (outfielder/first base-
man), junior Seth Wollenhaupt (outfielder),
junior Dylan Haehn and multi-purpose soph-
omore Austin Jettinghoff (third baseman/
second baseman/catcher).
Crestview, Lima Central Catholic and
Columbus Grove seem to be the top teams in
the conference and Id like to think wed be
right there in the mix, Geary added.
Clay Erman is serving as the varsity
assistant coach, along with Rusty Thompson.
Josiah Stober is the junior varsity coach,
along with JV assistants Chris Mercer and
Jordan Jettinghoff.
The JV roster has juniors Tyler Wrasman
and Gage Townsend; sophomores Zavier
Buzard, Tyler Rice and Jordan Herron; and
freshmen Gaige Rassman, Jesse Stemen,
Ryan Bullinger, Curt Wollenhaupt, Nick
Fitch, Logan Pruett, Tyler Talboom, Jordan
McCann and Austin Carder.
Jefferson was slated to begin 2012 with
a home doubleheader versus Van Wert on
Saturday, March 24.

DELPHOS Jefferson girls track and
field coach Ryan Carder had a quartet of
performers make it to the Division III State
Track and Field Championships in 2011.
Three of them that qualified in the
4x100-meter relay: Bridget Culp (who fin-
ished fifth in the 100-meter finals), Morgan
Fischbach (sprints and relays) and Emily
Fought (sprints and relays); exhausted their
eligibility for the team that placed 41st at
state in 2011.
One will return: senior Kennedy Boggs
(sprints, relays and jumps); as well as a pair
that were alternates and competed in the
regional relay meets as Fought was nursing
a leg injury in third-year junior Chelsey
Bishop (hurdles and sprints) and classmate
Brooke Teman (sprints).
That experienced trio will be the linch-
pins of this 2012 edition of Lady Wildcats
with a relatively youthful look of two
seniors, three juniors, seven sophomores
and two freshmen as they seek to
improve upon their third-place finish in the
Northwest Conference.
With those sprinters, the seventh-year
head coach figures that to be the major
strength of this years unit.
Sprints are our strength again this
year, along with Rileigh (Stockwell) in the
pole vault, Carder said. Kennedy will
be a contender in some events. Stephanie
(Koenig) is experienced in the distance
events and will look to contribute more
this year.
Besides the senior Koenig (distance)
and the sophomore Stockwell (sprints and
pole vault), six other Lady Wildcats earned
letters a year ago: junior Breanna Strayer
(sprints), junior Jenna Moreo (sprints),
sophomore Rebekah Geise (distance),
sophomore Tori Suever (middle distance),
sophomore Kenidi Ulm (distance) and
classmate Libbi Brown (throws).
Two others used up their eligibility a
year ago: Korey Boggs (distance and pole
vault) and Shelbi Brown (throws).
We will need to replace three of our
four state-qualifying relay members. We
will be working hard to replace those mem-
bers, as well as improve in our distance and
field events, Carder continued.
Carder will be looking to three promis-
ing newcomers to help off-set those losses:
sophomore thrower MaKayla Binkley;
freshman sprinter Brooke Culp and fresh-
man Heather Pohlman (sprints); along with
two others to fill out the roster: freshman
Bethany Kaverman and freshman Shannon
Coil.
We lose a lot of points due to gradua-
tion. We will look to improve in more areas
such as field events and distance to help
make up those lost points, Carder added.
Our sprinters will be solid as we still
retain Kennedy. Rileigh will also look to
improve in the pole vault as she narrowly
missed regionals last year.
Assisting Carder in the coaching duties
are Damon Ulm and Joel Brown.
Jefferson was slated to open the girls
track and field season at the Allen East tri-
meet on Tuesday, March 27.

Katie Goergens and Brooke Teman; and back, Brooke Culp, Bethany Kaverman,
Heather Pohlman and Shannon Coil. Absent is Makayla Binkley.

DELPHOS Jefferson has more than a
few graduated boys track and field partici-
pants to replace for seventh-year head coach
Larry Bub Lindeman.
That is because 13 exhausted their eligi-
bility in 2011, so he enters 2012 with a very
young and inexperienced squad.
Gone from a year ago are multiple-
year veterans such as Kody Richardson
(sprints and relays), Jacob Leach (sprints
and relays), Zach Morris (sprints and pole
vault), Cory Osting (shot put and discus) and
Joey Lindeman (jumps, sprints and relays),
as well as Mike West (middle distance),
Nate Staples (distance), Zak Lumpkin, Jesse
Cano (sprints and relays), Trenton Gossman
(sprints and relays), Mitchell Antalis (sprints
and relays), Logan Bonifas (sprints and
relays) and Josh Albridge (sprints and
relays).
Still, the cupboard is not empty as a pair
of Division III Regional qualifiers in third-
year junior Nick Gallmeier (200-meter dash;
sprints and relays) and third-year junior
Cody Biglow (300-meter hurdles; sprints,
hurdles and relays) to
build this new edition
around.
Three other veterans
return as well: third-
year senior Darren
Edinger (sprints, pole
vault and relays), sec-
ond-year senior Marc
Wollenhaupt (sprints)
and third-year junior
Jordan Barclay (dis-
tance).
Sprinting is what
we do well coming into
2012. What we lack is
numbers overall, with
only 16 total, and our
field events are also in
need of improvement,
especially as we go on,
Coach Lindeman said.
The coach will look
to a lot of varsity fresh
faces to step in for the
graduated Wildcats and
fill holes in the line-
up: senior Jared Boop
(throws), senior Tyler Miller (middle dis-
tance and pole vault), junior Chris Truesdale
(sprints, relays and pole vault), junior Austin
Pruett (distance), freshman Dominic Munoz
(sprints and relays), Devin Van Dyke (sprints
and relays), Chandler Brantley (sprints),
Cole Fleck (sprints), Troy Claypool (sprints)
and Zach Hittle (sprints).
Due to lack of numbers, Lindeman will
relay more on individuals to do well more
than the team overall.
We should have individuals place well
with Darren, Nick and Cody but depth and
lack of numbers will be a factor in the team
competition, Lindeman added.
The Jefferson boys track and field team
for 2012 was set to open the new campaign
at the Allen East tri-meet on Tuesday,
March 27.

DELPHOS Jeffersons fast-pitch soft-
ball team finished 2011 with a 5-15 mark,
including 3-6 in the Northwest Conference
chase.
With head coach Dave Wollenhaupt
beginning his third season at the helm with
a 10-30 overall mark (6-12 in the NWC).
He is hoping that with the return of
ace starting pitcher Taylor Branham (third-
year junior) and her batterymate, third-year
senior Cassidy Bevington (catcher), that
strength up the middle will give the Red and
White a leg up on 2012.
With those two being able to spend the
off-season working together, along with
others, the coach figures that will help this
crew of Lady Wildcats jibe well.
He has already seen the results in the
preseason preparations.
The team chemistry we have is the best
in my three years of being the head coach
here, he noted.
Branham spent the off-season working
with a pitching coach on a weekly basis to
expand her repertoire in the center circle
and the coach expects that to pay big divi-
dends this spring, especially with a veteran
backstop he can rely on.
It should also help that the middle of the
infield in particular, third-year senior
shortstop Samantha Thitoff and junior sec-
ond sacker and speedster Corrine Metzger,
along with junior centerfielder Fallon Van
Dyke should provide the needed up-the-
middle foundation most successful pro-
grams have to build from.
Still, the head coach has to replace a
trio of graduated players, led by third-year
first baseman Chelsey Fischer (second-team
all-NWC), third-year third baseman Paige
Ricker and second-year leftfielder Alex
Rostorfer.
He will be looking to returning players
like junior Destiny Thompson (catcher/
outfielder), junior Kayla Kill (infielder/
outfielder), junior Alexis Cook (infielder),
sophomore Jasmine McDougall (infielder),
sophomore Kimber Kill (utility player) and
sophomore Hannah Sensibaugh (out with
an ACL injury) to step into the open spots
in the lineup.
As well, newcomers such as junior
Rachel Miller, junior Whitney Hohlbein,
freshman Samantha Branham, freshman
Sarah Thitoff, freshman Megan Harlan and
classmate Shayla Rice will try to work their
way into the lineup.
The only negative to this years crew is a
lack of overall depth.
We continue to struggle with numbers.
However, we will play a full varsity sched-
ule and a limited junior varsity schedule to
provide playing opportunities and devel-
opment time for our younger players,
Wollenhaupt added.
Keri Wollenhaupt is serving as the JV
coach and Adam Wollenhaupt the assistant
coach.
Jefferson was slated to open the new
campaign on Tuesday, March 27, at Van
Wert.

DELPHOS The St. Johns baseball
unit finished 2011 in the Division IV state
semifinals, the first time ever.
They also grabbed the undisputed Midwest
Athletic Conference title at 8-1 the first
time ever en route to a 17-5 mark for head
coach Dan Metzger (101-103).
However, with the graduation of six multi-
ple-letter players and two others who lettered
as seniors, as well as an injury to a returning
player, Metzger will have his job cut out for
him as he starts his 10th campaign.
As a team, we are looking to build off
last years success as we won the MAC and
the regional for the first time ever, Metzger
noted. We graduated eight seniors, several
of whom were 3- and 4-year starters. We do
have five returning starters and three others
that lettered, so we should have the experi-
ence and leadership that we need.
Among the key losses were long-time stal-
warts: ace pitcher/first baseman Austin Vogt
(47 1/3 innings, 5-2, 1.77 earned run average,
48 strikeouts; .317 batting average, .517 slug-
ging percentage, .532 on-base percentage; 7
doubles, 17 runs batted in, 13 runs scored),
outfielder Jordan Leininger (22 1/3 IPs, 4-0,
2.03 ERA; .432 BA, .689 SLG%, .518 OB%,
10 2Bs, 3 home runs, 37 RBIs, 11 stolen bases,
10 runs), second baseman Ryan Edelbrock
(14 IPs, 1-1, 4.00 ERA; .256 BA, .400 OB%),
4-year shortstop/reliever Ty Bergfeld (2 saves;
.318/.409/.518, 4 2Bs, 25 runs, 20 stolen bases),
outfielder Tyler Ditto (.262 BA, 4 2Bs, 15
RBIs) and designated hitter Chris Pohlman
(limited to 17 at-bats due to injury), along with
Derek Klaus and Brad Gerberick.
Offensively is where we were hurt the
most by graduation, especially in the power
department. I still feel we have good over-
all team speed and will look to use that to
our advantage by being very aggressive on
The St. Johns varsity baseball team for 2012 has, kneeling from left, Austin Reindel, Brice Schulte, Dylan Krendl, Ryan Densel,
Troy Warnecke, Kyle Neumeier, Curtis Geise and Tanner Calvelage; and standing, head coach Dan Metzger, Josh Rode, Austin
Jostpille, Ryan Buescher, Isaac Klausing, Andrew Metzger, Cody Kundert, Alex Wehri and assistant coach Zach Metzner. Absent

the bases, Metzger continued. We will
look to steal bases and take the extra base.
We will also probably be more small-ball-
oriented than we have the last two years,
moving runners up with the bunt as well as
bunting for base hits.
That also means that defensively, we
need to be very sound. We dont have the
pitchers that will strike out a lot of batters,
so when they make good pitches, we need to
make the plays and not give the other teams
extra outs. We have a lot of position players
coming back with varsity experience, so we
will rely on them to make sure the newcom-
ers are in proper positions and aware of the
different situations to make those plays.
Those five starters returning include
third-year junior Curtis Geise (42 IPs, 5-1,
2.83 ERA, 44 Ks; moving to shortstop from
third base) and classmate Troy Warnecke
(third baseman/shortstop; 0-1, 5.73 ERA;
.405 OB%, 5 2Bs, 11 runs, 10 RBIs), along
with letterman junior outfielder/first base-
man Ryan Buescher (2-0, 2.42 ERA, 8 2/3
IPs in relief; .294 BA); those three will key
this years pitching staff.
As well, third-year senior speedster, cen-
terfielder Tanner Calvelage (.410/.500/.517,
19 SBs, 25 runs, 5 2Bs, 15 RBIs), third-year
senior Ryan Densel (left field/second base-
man; .298/.298/.400) and senior catcher
Austin Reindel return to their positions
from a year ago.
However, senior pitcher/third sacker/sec-
ond baseman Jordan Bergfeld a likely
starter suffered another shoulder injury
and is currently out.
Senior first baseman/designated hitter
Alex Wehri, senior Cody Kundert (sec-
ond baseman/shortstop/pitcher) and junior
Andrew Metzger (right field/pitcher) will
step into the everyday lineup, with their
positions dependent upon who is pitching.

DELPHOS St. Johns head boys track
and field coach Dr. Jay DeWitt has built quite
a mark in his eight previous seasons as the
leader.
Four state champions (2 100-meter dash
and 2 4x100-meter relays) and one state
runner-up (4x100).
He has had a state qualifier and state
placer each year during his tenure, including
last seasons fifth-place 4x100-meter relay of
Chris Will, Tyler Jettinghoff, A.J. Klausing
and Evan Burgei.
With 14 lettermen back from 2011
including the third-year senior Will (sprints,
relays and pole vault) and the sophomore
Jettinghoff (sprints and relays) he expects
to add to that legacy in 2012.
In fact, those two should help the Blue
Jays do quite well in those events.
Our strengths are the middle distance,
sprints, relays and the pole vault, DeWitt
noted.
He only has one other letterman that is a
senior: David Lindeman (sprints, relays and
long jump).
Nine of the lettermen are in their junior
season, led by third-year performers in Mark
Boggs (middle distance, high jump and
throws), Cole Fischbach (middle distance),
Jake Hays (middle distance and relays), Will
Buettner (hurdles, sprints and relays), Rob
Ruda (sprints and relays) and Sean Flanagan
(throws).
Back for their second seasons are juniors
Isaac Altenburger (middle distance, pole
vault and long jump), Jared Knebel (middle
distance and relays) and Ben Youngpeter
(sprints, relays and long jump).
As well, two other sophomores are back:
Aaron Hellman (middle and long distance)
and Luke MacLennan (sprints and relays).
Overall, though, with 25 boys down
from 33 a year ago depth in some events
might be an issue for DeWitt.
That is one of our weaknesses a lack

DELPHOS With 11 letterwinners back
from 2011, the St. Johns girls track and field
crew has a good amount of experience back to
build 2012 around.
However, seven of them are sophomores, so
6th-year mentor Dave Desenberg still has a lot
of upside for this flock of Lady Blue Jays as
they commence 2012.
Back for another go-around are senior
Jessica Hammons (fourth year; hurdles), senior
Courtney Grothouse (fourth year; pole vault,
400 and 800 meters), junior Alyssa Faurot
(third year; high jump and sprints), junior Ally
Mohler (second year; 400 and 800 meters),
sophomore Samantha Bonifas (sprints), soph-
omore Maddie Burgei (sprints), sophomore
Emilie Fischbach (sprints and long jump),
sophomore Megan Joseph (distance and hur-
dles), sophomore Madison Kreeger (shot put
and discus), sophomore Paige Lucas (shot
put and discus) and sophomore Brooke Zuber
(distance).
We are strong in the throwing events,
sprints and middle distance. Our goal this year

dependent on who is pitching and when the
team needs more pitching are seniors
Isaac Klausing (first baseman/pitcher),
Austin Jostpille (catcher/second baseman//
outfielder), Brice Schulte (outfielder/sec-
ond baseman), Josh Rode (third base), Kyle
Neumeier (outfielder) and Dylan Krendl
(outfielder).
Pitching will be the biggest facet of this
years team to shore up.
Graduating four of our pitchers, starting
pitching at the varsity level is a concern.
Curtis started eight games and has emerged
as very good pitcher, Metzger added. Ryan
and Troy have experience as well but every-
one else has to step up. We kept guys like
Cody and Isaac on junior varsity last year
because we had so many senior pitchers and
those two needed innings; in particular, they
will need to give us some quality innings.
Players on the junior varsity team are juniors
Clay Courtney, Drew Wagner and Craig
Klausing; sophomores Ben Wrasman, T.J.
Hoersten, Kyle Pohlman and Andy May; and
freshmen Gage Seffernick, J.R. Keirns, Jordan
Boone, Austin Heiing and Justin Siefker.
Assistant coaches are Zach Metzner, Eric
Kerner, Andy Vaske and Craig Hershey.
The Jays were to open 2012 at Wapakoneta
on Monday, March 26.

of depth as well as lacking field events experience, DeWitt said.
There is only two other seniors on this years roster: Adam Haunhorst
(throws) and Caleb Smith (throws).
As well, only one other junior Andrew Grothouse (throws) looks
to make his mark.
Four other 10th-graders are on the 2012 roster: Nick Bockey (sprints/
relays), Eric Gerberick (sprints/relays/long jump), Nate Schroeder (throws)
and Quinn Wise (sprints/relays).
Two of the four freshmen: Nick Martz (sprints;) and Tyler Conley
(middle distance); come in for special mention as promising newcomers
by the head coach, along with Brian Pohlman (sprints/relays) and Austin
Schulte (throws).
Besides Klausing (hurdles and relays) and Burgei (sprints and relays),
both fourth-year seniors, DeWitt lost another fourth-year senior Joe
Haggard (7th in the 110-meter hurdles at state and a state qualifier in the
300-meter hurdles).
Also gone due to graduation are the likes of Payton Curran (thrower;
third year) and single-year veterans Scott Klausing (middle distance),
Dylan Dancer (middle distance), Jason Michel (middle distance) and Alex
Schnipke (thrower).
As well, sophomore Spencer Ginter (throws) is out due to a shoulder
injury.
Assistant coaches include Jack DeWitt (throws/high jump), Dan
Hermiller (long jump/sprints), Tim Metzner (pole vault/relays) and Archie
Metcalfe (throws).
For Dr. DeWitt as always the goals are long-term for the 2012
season; what they do in May and June are what he aims for.
We want to qualify a lot of athletes to the regional and state meets and
stay healthy. Those are our biggest goals of the season, he added.
Jays are set to open 2012 Tuesday, March 27, at home versus Shawnee.
DeWitt
(Continued from Page 8)
as coaches is to work on developing our field events and add
depth to our sprinters and sprint relays, Desenberg assessed.
We return those seven letterwinners from our current sopho-
more class.
If we can stay healthy and continue to develop our under-
classmen, we should be competitive in the always-tough
Midwest Athletic Conference.
Still, he must find replacements from last springs 3-4
dual/triangular meet team (5th at MAC meet) for graduated
state qualifiers such as Tiffany Geise (fourth in the high jump
at 5-4; All-MAC; third year), Gabrielle Metzner (100-meter
hurdles; all-MAC; third year) and fourth-year Tiffany Recker
(shot put; 8th in regional discus; All-MAC discus) all
earning all-Ohio Academic Awards along with fourth-year
letterwinners Bailey Calvelage and Alicia Ankerman (11th at
regional pole vault) and third-year Emma Boggs (distance).
Hoping to do just that are promising newcomers in senior
Kelsey Britt (shot put and discus), junior Madison Zuber (400
and 800), freshman Halie Benavidez (sprints) and freshman
Tara Vorst (distance), along with junior Amber Cross, junior
Stephanie Honigford, junior Bailie Hulihan, junior Brittany
Kramer, junior Kelsey Pohlman, junior Teresa Pohlman,
sophomore Alicia Buettner, sophomore Kaylie Youngpeter,
freshman Rebekah Fischer, freshman Kestley Hulihan and
freshman Lydia Schwinnen.
Assisting Desenberg are Dr. Jerry Burgei, Jeff Martin,
Archie Metcalfe and Tim Metzner.
The Lady Jays open the upcoming season Tuesday, March
27, at home versus Shawnee.

OTTOVILLE The Ottoville
Division IV fast-pitch softball unit
finished 2011 at an 0-for 0-11,
including 0-5 in the Putnam County
League.
Joe Modica begins his 12th year
at the helm of the Lady Green in
hopes that his eight letterwinners
many who played most of the
innings the last two seasons will
help turn things around in 2012.
With no seniors on last years
roster though two expected to
return moved away and a young
team for the last two seasons, among
those veterans are third-year senior
Kelsey Hoersten (center field/
pitcher/catcher), third-year senior
Krista Schimmoeller (pitcher/first
baseman), third-year senior Marissa
Nienberg (outfield), third-year senior
Angelina Keeran (outfielder) and
third-year senior Lindsey Eickholt
(infielder).
As well, third-year junior Paige
Lucas (outfielder), third-year junior
MacKenzie Martin (pitcher/infield-
er) and veteran sophomore Nicole
Burgei (outfielder/infielder) are back
to familiar spots in the lineup.
With that experience, the every-
day lineup is expected to be the
strength of the 2012 Lady Big Green
softballers.
Our hitting should be our biggest
strength. Despite our experience, our
pitching and defense will be the areas
we have to improve upon for us to
turn things around, Modica noted.
He will need the youngsters new
to the varsity roster: such as sopho-
more Eden Schlagbaum, sophomore
Stephanie Horstman, freshman Megan
Risner, freshman Haley Landwehr,
freshman Morgan Beining, freshman
Courtney Von Sossan and freshman
Robyn Turnwald; to fill in the lone
open spot in the lineup and provide
needed depth.
Assistant coaches include Todd
Knippen and Ashley Crossgrove.

more Alex Horstman and sophomore Matt
Turnwald will get first crack at replacing
the versatile likes of starters/multiple-season
lettermen Cody Delong (pitcher/infielder),
Matt Honigford ([itcher/infielder/outfielder),
Tyler Turnwald (pitcher/infielder), Aaron
Wehri (pitcher/catcher) and Justin Fischer
(infielder).
We have to fill in for those five players
we lost; that is always a concern coming in
to replace experienced players like that,
Castronova commented. Still, we have a
good group of kids back. We also strive and
stress to be fundamentally sound so we can be
competitive year in, year out.
One of the keys to our season is being
aggressive at the plate; we want to be able to
score runs and for us, thats the way to do it.
Health will be a concern as the Big Green
seeks to be in the mix as Putnam County
League contenders.
If we stay healthy, we could be in the race
to be at the top. Our first goal is to be competi-
tive in the league so we have a chance to win
it, he added. Whatever happens in the PCL,
we want that competitiveness to carry over
into the tournament.
Ottoville was slated to open the new cam-
paign at home versus Putnam County rival
Ottawa-Glandorf on Tuesday, March 27.

year junior Rachel Beining (throws) and
sophomore Tonya Kaufman (high jump,
long jump and sprints).
The strength of this team will come
in the field events. We have a good core
of throwers in state qualifiers Lauren
and Tammy, as well as Rachel in the
discus, Horstman said. Abby and
Taylor give us strength in the running
events and Tonya had a great season in
both of the jumps.
Six others will be making their var-
sity debuts in 2012: sophomore Danielle
Trenkamp (shot put and discus), sopho-
more Monica Sarka (long jump and
sprints), Kelsey Miller (shot put and
discus), sophomore Megan Schnipke
(middle distance) and lone freshman
Lexie Wannemacher (shot put and dis-
cus).
Having only one freshman and need-
ing to replace graduated pieces such as
multiple-state qualifier Shayla Siefker
(distance and middle distance; 4 years),
4-year letterwinners in Natasha Kaufman
(high jump and hurdles), Kari Beining
(middle distance and distance), Brooke
Bendele (distance), Gayle Rayman
(sprints and hurdles) and Jamie Rieger
(sprints and hurdles), 2-year winner
Erin Hohlbein (shot put and discus) and
veterans Melissa Schnipke and Bridget
Miller as well as several veterans that
chose not to go back out off a 22-girl
roster in 2011 Horstman is concerned
about depth.
We have had good depth the past
few years but we dont have that this
year; that is a major concern, he added.
We do have a good base to be competi-
tive in all our meets. We need all of our
team members to get better and be able
to pick up more events to make the
team better.
The Putnam County League looks
to come down to Columbus Grove and
Continental for first and everybody else
fighting for third.
Susan Jones begins her sixth year as
an assistant coach to the Lady Green.
Ottoville is scheduled to commence
the new season on Thursday, March
29, in a tri-meet with Fort Jennings at
Paulding.

OTTOVILLE Ottoville head boys
track and field coach Ryan Horstman fig-
ures to have a strong 2012 season with a
senior-laden and overall experienced ros-
ter.
This warm spring should help our senior-
and junior-laden team to get off to a fast start.
I have a good number of kids out and feel that
they are ready to get to the meets and start
competing, Horstman noted.
It helps that of the eight seniors on
this roster, all of them garnered letters in
last seasons campaign, led by regional-
qualifying (in 3 events) Greg Rue (shot
put, discus and high jump last year: throws,
high jump, 400-meter dash), third-year
Seth Bendele (distance), Kevin Schnipke
(throws and sprint relays), Ross Honigford
(throws), third-year Sam Beining (hurdles,
pole vault, and sprints), third-year Jason
Turnwald (distance, middle distance and

300 hurdles), Eric Wannemacher (throws)
and Josh Schroeder (throws and sprints).
As well, 10 11th-graders dot this years
edition of Big Green boys tracksters:
Austin Meyer (sprints and long jump),
Jonathan Tiller (distance), third-year Ryan
Honigford (distance/middle distance),
Logan Kortokrax (pole vault, 400 and 800
meters), Anthony Eickholt (pole vault/
hurdles/sprints), third-year Dylan Klima
(pole vault/sprints), Logan Gable (long
jump, hurdles and sprints), DAngelo
Bevly (long jump and sprints), third-year
Matt Burgei (sprints and high jump) and
Andy Horstman (throws and distance).
Three sophomores: Lucas Maag (long
jump and sprints), Ryan Kemper (distance/
middle distance and long jump) and Johnny
Landwehr (throws and distance); and a
foursome of freshmen in Ryan Kimmet
(distance and throws), Austin Honigford
(middle distance, sprints and long jump),
Colin Bendele (throws and sprints) and
Brandon Kimmet (distance and throws);
hope to provide depth.
Athletes to watch include Greg Rue,
Sam Beining, Jason Turnwald, Ryan
Honigford and Matt Burgei. Colin Bendele
is also a youngster to watch, the coach
said.
He does have to replace 2-time state run-
ner-up high-jumper Travis Eickholt, along
with Nathan Turnwald (injured; long jump
and sprints), Logan Kaverman (injured;
sprints and hurdles), Taylor Gasser and
Andy Foster.
Ottoville is slated to open the new
campaign on Thursday, March 29, in a
Paulding tri-meet with Fort Jennings.

FORT JENNINGS Jeff Swick has
amassed a 93-98 mark in his decade at the
helm of the Fort Jennings varsity baseball
unit, including last springs 6-8 mark (3-3
in the Putnam County League).
With six starters returning, he hopes to
start his second decade at his alma mater
on a winning note,
not only during the
regular campaign but
also in the Division
IV tournament
(Crestview Sectional;
Coldwater District).
He returns four
pitchers from last
years crew: PCL
honorable mention 6-6 southpaw Cody
Warnecke (fourth year; senior pitcher/
outfielder; 3-2 record, 2.70 earned run
average) whom Swick expects to earn
higher league and even state honors, 6-5
right-hander Troy Hellman (third year;
senior pitcher/outfielder a long lanky
kid with gap power who is due for a
breakout year with pitching and hitting;
hes been a workhorse in the weight room
and gym in the off-season and has the size
and strength to lead from center field and
on the mound; he has saved his best for
last and he will surprise people), PCL
honorable mention Nick Verhoff (third
year; pitcher/third baseman a bulldog
type of player who will anchor the back
end of our games) and 6-2 righty Kurt
Warnecke (third year; switching-hitting
pitcher/shortstop will lead our infield
from shortstop and hit at the top of our
lineup).
The other lettermen back are fourth-
year senior Nolan Neidert (lefty-swing-
ing catcher/first baseman; second-team
PCL) whom Swick figures to earn
higher PCL honors as a senior leader
and second-year 12th-grader Zach
Schuerman (catcher/first sacker).
Five lettermen were lost due to gradu-
ation from a year ago: first-team PCL
Jared Calvelage (third year; catcher/
pitcher), first-team PCL Brad Trentman
(third year, centerfield/pitcher), second-
team PCL Tyler Good (third year, out-
fielder), Ryan Schuerman (third year,
second base) and Austin Norbeck (third
year, shortstop/pitcher).
While we lost a lot with the gradu-
ation of five 3-year letterwinners, we
return those six starters. We return four
pitchers with much of our varsity innings
and look forward to these pitchers lead-
ing our team, Swick pointed out. With
three seniors and a junior anchoring
our staff, we look for a strong pitch-
ing performance night in and night our.
Offensively, we need to replace three of
our top four hitters. That will be a chal-
lenge but we have many players ready
to emerge as solid offensive weapons,
given the change for at-bats and time to
develop. We finished the season with a
better than .300 batting average as a team
and look forward to continuing this suc-
cess.
Three promising newcomers include
sophomore Alex Vetter (third baseman/
outfield; strong kid with talent to hit
to all fields), sophomore Jared Hoersten
(infielder/outfielder; Jared will serve as
a nice fit to our second-base void; hes
a hard-nosed player that will produce in
all facets of the game) and sophomore
Ryan Rau (infielder/pitcher; Ryan will
give us quality mound time and help an
already strong staff, as well as be a nice
fit defensively on the infield).
The remainder of the roster has Dylan
VanLoo (sophomore outfield/pitcher),
Josh Wittler (sophomore catcher/out-
field), Bret Clay (sophomore infielder/
pitcher), Caleb Bankey (sophomore out-
fielder), Mark Metzger (freshman out-
fielder/catcher), Connor Wallenhorst
(freshman outfielder) and classmate
Collin Wieging (outfielder).
As with every year, we look forward
to putting a talented and disciplined team
on the field; this year will be no different.
With the returning lettermen we have and
the increased dedication of the under-
classmen, we are anticipating another
successful season, Swick added. In the
PCL, the race for the title is always a dif-
ficult one; this year will be no different.
There are many teams with some great
talent returning.
Leipsic and Kalida look to be the
teams with the most veteran players
returning. Leipsics success in the
ACME Tourney is an indication that they
are probably the most well-rounded team
in the league. We look forward to chal-
lenging for the PCL crown every night
out.
Assistant coaches are Jared Kleman
and Joel Bruskotter.
Jennings was set to open 2012 at home
versus Elida Monday, March 26.

FORT JENNINGS The Fort Jennings
girls track and field team had 33 members on
the crew in 2011.
Kevin Horstman wont have nearly as many
for his 14th year in 2012 (the entire length of
the Musketeer program) as 23 are out for this
spring.
On the boys side, only 13 members are
out after having 19 on last springs 8-48 dual-
invitational-meet unit (6th in the PCL, 13th at
districts).
The major loss to this years Lady Musketeer
team due to graduation is 4-year letterwinner
Lauren Norbeck (hurdles) but she is not the
only one as a trio of 4-year participants in
Brittany Cooper, Samantha Dulle and Kendra
Klausing and 3-year letterwinners Lacey Hittle
and Mindy Merricle also are gone.
The Musketeers return 13 letterwinners
from last years 23-33 dual/invitational-meet
team (3rd in the Putnam County League, 10th
at districts and 26th at regionals), led by junior
Macy Schroeder (Regional finalist in 100- and
200-meter dashes last spring).
Also back are third-year senior Gina Clay
(middle distance) and second-year senior
Andrea Heitmeyer (sprints); third-year juniors
Lori Bruskotter (sprints), Brittany Inkrott (dis-
tance), Elaina Maag (hurdles), Marissa Mesker
(middle distance) and Kaitlin Stechschulte
(middle distance) and second-year 11th-
grader Mara Brown (sprints and jumps); and
second-year sophomores Emily Grone (hur-
dles), Stephanie Korte (sprints), and Alyssa
Schimmoeller (distance).
Third-year participants include juniors Katie
Schnipke (throws), Gina Stechschulte (sprints)
and Martina Weems (sprints). Second-year
participants are sophomores Emily Kehres
(throws) and Min Metcalfe (sprints).
We should be strong on the track, as no
running events appear weak at this point.
We have high expectations for the team this
spring, hoping for a top-half finish in the PCL,
Horstman said. Where we are weak is in our
field events we lack experience there and
the fact that we dont have a junior high track
program, so our sophomores are still learning
their respective events and our freshmen will
start from scratch.
Favorites in the PCL should be Ottoville
and Columbus Grove.
Those five freshmen for the Lady Musketeers
are Sarah Chandler (sprints), Keri Eickholt
(sprints), Lindsey Korte (sprints), Lindsey
Trentman (sprints) and Alyssa Wiedeman
(sprints).
The Musketeer boys return third-year seniors
Tyler Wiedeman (sprints) and Aaron Schnipke
(sprints) among the seven letterwinners, along
with second-year seniors Adam Krietemeyer
(throws) and Jeremy Schimmoeller (hurdles)
and second-year sophomores Garrett Berelsman
(distance), Tyler Blankemeyer (distance) and
Logan Sickels (distance).
Notable losses include Ryan Kraner (school
record holder in the 1,600-meter run) and
4-year letterwinner Andrew Huntsman, along
with graduated veterans Ben Kleman and
Kegan Sickels.
I think we should be pretty strong in the
sprint relays and distance events; that is where
our experience is back, Horstman added. We
dont have a lot of experience overall and we
dont have a lot of depth, either, especially in
the field events. We also only have one other
hurdler, so we need to shore that area up.
We look to be a team that competes better
as the season progresses and our sophomores
and freshman mature. Columbus Grove is the
PCL favorite.
The remainder of the boys unit has fourth-year
senior participants Jason Berelsman (throws) and
Petey Van Loo (sprints); third-year junior par-
ticipant Adam Kleman (middle distance); sec-
ond-year sophomore participant Alex Ketcham
(throws); and freshman Evan Ricker (hurdles).
Assistants are Mike Knott and Jaime
Bryan.
Fort Jennings was set to open the 2012
track and field season versus Elida and Ottawa-
Glandorf at Ottawa Tuesday, March 27.
Musketeer girls track experienced for 2012, boys lack depth
The 2012 edition of the Fort Jennings varsity track and field unit has, front row, left to
right, Min Metcalfe, Brittany Inkrott, Macy Schroeder, Gina Clay, Andrea Heitmeyer and
Lori Bruskotter; middle row, Alyssa Wiedeman, Lindsey Trentman, Lindsey Korte, Alyssa
Schimmoeller, Martina Weems, Sarah Chandler, Marissa Mesker and Mara Brown;
and back, Stephanie Korte, Emily Grone, Gina Stechschulte, Kaitlin Stechschulte, Katie
Schnipke and Elaina Maag. Absent are Emily Kehres and Keri Eickholt.
The Fort Jennings boys track and field varsity for 2012 has, kneeling from
left, Adam Kleman, Logan Sickels, Garrett Berelsman, Tyler Blankemeyer
and Evan Ricker; and standing, Petey Van Loo, Jeremy Schimmoeller, Aaron
Schnipke, Tyler Wiedeman, Jason Berelsman and Adam Krietemeyer. Absent
is Alex Ketcham.

SPENCERVILLE Troy Montenery
starts his second season at the helm of
the Spencerville baseball program with a
veteran crew of six returning starters and
three other part-timers from an 8-13 edi-
tion of a year ago.
The Bearcats finished tied for seventh
in the Northwest Conference at 3-6 and
lost in the sectional finals.
Three seniors are back as full-time
starters from a year ago: fourth-year guys
Matt Youngpeter (second base/pitcher;
.254 batting average, 8 runs scored, 11
runs batted in; 0-4, 6.54 ERA, 25 innings)
and Jared Rex (catcher/pitcher; .188 BA,
10 runs, 7 RBIs; 0-0, 4.07 ERA, 21
IP); and third-year guy and second-team
NWC shortstop Cory Rieman (.406 BA,
17 runs, 11 RBIs).
Three juniors are also back: third-year
man Joel Shimp (outfield/pitcher; .255
BA; 1-1, 2 saves, 3.89 ERA, 9 IP), as
well as Bryce Ringwald (outfield; 6 Runs,
7 RBIs) and Tanner Koverman (third
base).
Three others are likely to step full-time
into the lineup: third-year senior pitcher/
outfielder Kasey Lee (7 runs; 1-0, 2.76
ERA, 13 IP; limited by injury for sev-
eral weeks last spring), junior outfielder
Danny Settlemire and sophomore pitcher/
infielder Jonathan Shimp (2-2, 6.39 ERA,
15 IP).
Three promising newcomers expected
to fill in for three graduated seniors
Levi Krouskop (P/1B; 2nd-Team NWC,
.328 BA, 14 RBI, 12 Runs; 3-2 Record,
4.74 ERA, 31 IP), Keaton Vandemark
(C/1B/P; Honorable Mention NWC, .318
BA, 15 RBI, 13 Runs; 1-3 Record, 7.79
ERA, 9 IP) and Garrett Croft (CF; .254
BA, 14 Runs, 7 stolen bases) are juniors
Dusty Settlemire (catcher/outfield) and
Sean Monfort (infield) and sophomore
Nate Gaddy (pitcher/outfield).
Montenery, beginning his seventh sea-
son as a varsity head coach at 73-61,
expects defense and leadership to be hall-
marks for this years crew.
We have flexibility in our defensive
positions we can put players in mul-
tiple positions and not lose anything,
which helps us in matching up with our
opponents pretty well and with four
veteran seniors, we have quality senior
leadership. That started with an excellent
job at setting an example of commitment,
starting with the off-season work that they
put in last fall and winter, Montenery
noted. Nine of our veterans from last
year returned from the year before, so our
offensive numbers should keep improv-
ing. We have a similar story in terms of
pitching; we were very inexperienced as
a pitching staff in 2011 but are in bet-
ter shape coming into 2012. Those guys
made great strides from the year before
and if we can continue to make strides
like that this year, we should be even
more competitive and successful.
One area we need to work on right
now is base-running, getting the kids
home that we get on base; another goal
is to increase our quality at-bats and run
production, cutting down on our strike-
outs and putting the ball in play more.
Much of 2011 was spent learning how to
become competitive day-in and day-out.
In 2012, we hope to build on those com-
petition skills, advancing to the next level
of increasing our victories. Ultimately,
the ability to consistently post winning
records is our program goal.
While not overpowering in any one
particular area, we hope to be competent
in all areas, resulting in lots of competi-
tive games. I predict the top three NWC
teams as LCC, Crestview and Jefferson.
The remainder of the varsity has sopho-
mores Aaron Crider (pitcher/first base), Jon
Long (infielder) and James Schaad (pitcher/
infielder); and freshmen Byron Gay (catch-
er/outfield) and Red Wood (infield).
Because of the upperclassmen, they
have set the tone for the younger guys.
Were expecting the newcomers to help
us out this spring when they get the
chance, Montenery added. Overall, the
Spencerville baseball program is making
steady progress through the help of many
individuals, from high school all the way
down to the youngest players. In 2011,
we posted an overall program record of
75-62 (grades 5-12), a vast improvement
from the 40-87 mark of 2010. Along
with improved performance on the field,
multiple updates to the varsity and middle
school fields things such as a speaker
system, new and improved fencing, score-
boards, better dirt playing surface and
a concession stand have enhanced
our program. This will hopefully encour-
age more people to want to attend High
School or Middle School games and take
a look at the program in action!
The junior varsity team is led by
second-year head coach Taylor Hesseling
and assistant Adam Kraning. The JV
team currently has a 10-game schedule,
much of which will be determined based
on varsity rainouts, as there are currently
only 17 players total.
Varsity assistant coaches include Jim
Fisher and Doug Stetler.
Spencerville was scheduled to open
their season earlier this week.
Bearcat baseballers return 6 starters
One area we need to
work on right now is base-
running, getting the kids
home that we get on base;
another goal is to increase
our quality at-bats and run
production, cutting down
on our strikeouts and put-
ting the ball in play more.
Much of 2011 was spent
learning how to become
competitive day-in and
day-out. In 2012, we hope
to build on those competi-
tion skills, advancing to
the next level of increasing
our victories. Ultimately,
the ability to consistently
post winning records
is our program goal.

SPENCERVILLE Bruce McConnell
has coached a lot of strong track and field
athletes in his 24 years at the helm of the
Spencerville boys program and 21 years for
the Lady Bearcats.
He has a few more returning from
2011 from rela-
tively young teams on
both sides as he
prepares his teams to
have strong campaigns
in 2012.
On the boys side,
he has six that partici-
pated in the 2011 Division III State Track
and Field Championships, led by fourth-
year senior Daniel Binkley (6th in the
high jump; 2011 MVP and second-leading
scorer; high and long jumps), fourth-year
senior Nick Davisson (4x8 and 4x4 relays;
middle distance), third-year senior Tyler
Shumate (4x8 relay; sprints), third-year
junior Derek Goecke (4x4 and 4x8 relays;
middle distance), third-year junior Aaron
Hefner (4x4 and 4x8 relays; middle dis-
tance and hurdles) and third-year junior
Jonathon Smith (4x4 relay; sprints; region-
al qualifier in 3 events).
As well, this team also returns region-
al qualifiers in third-year senior Calvin
Grigsby (anchored fifth-place 4x100
relay after being injured much of season;
sprints), fourth-year senior Brandon Meyer
(3 events; hurdles and high jump), third-
year junior Keith Lenhart (3,200 meters
despite injury-plagued 2011; coming off
off-season surgery) and third-year junior
Lucas Shumate (discus; throws).
Other returnees 14 in all include
top shot-putter in third-year senior Zach
Gay (throws), third-year junior Cole
Roberts (pole vault and sprints), third-year
junior Joe Wisher (distance) and sopho-
more Anthony Schuh (hurdles).
That crew along with the graduated
Kevin Lenhart (middle distance and dis-
tance) helped the Bearcats grab district
titles the last two years and finish third in
the Northwest Conference last spring.
We have an experienced team from
last year. All four relays qualified to the
regional finals with two making it to state,
McConnell said. Key injuries last year
prevented our hopes of defending the NWC
title from the previous three years; hopeful-
ly, everyone will remain healthy this year.
Our goal is to have two individuals score
in every event at the conference meet. It
should be another banner year for the NWC
with many state qualifiers returning.
I especially consider Columbus, Grove,
Bluffton and Crestview to be leaders in the
league.
Hoping to help buttress the Bearcat
hopes are sophomores Jeremiah Campbell
(throws), Gabe Davisson (throws),
Matthew Hurles (distance) and Caleb Vogt
(distance); and freshmen Chris Adams
(throws), Cole Bellows (sprints), Chance
Campbell (sprints), Tyler Dues (distance),
Daniil Gelivera (pole vault and hurdles),
Grant Goecke (sprints), Tyler Haithcock
(sprints), Eli Hawk (throws) and promis-
ing newcomers Trevor McMichael (middle
distance) and Logan Vandemark (throws).
The Lady Bearcats arent without their
share of state-qualifying performers, led
by fourth-year senior Kelli Ley (state run-
ner-up in 400-meter dash, seventh in the
200-meter dash; sprints; school records in
100, 200, 400 and 800 and NWC record-
holder in 400; 3-time NWC first-teamer),
fourth-year senior Alexa Brown (4x8 relay;
distance; Adademic All-Ohio Scholar),
third-year senior Cortney Miller (4x8 and
4x4 relays; middle distance; All-Ohio and
Aacademic All-Ohio) and veteran sopho-
mores Caitlin Wurst (4x8 relay; middle dis-
tance) and Jenna Kahle (4x4 relay; hurdles
and high jump).
As well, returning regional qualifiers
include fourth-year senior Jennifer Post
(high jump and sprints) and second-year
junior Abby Freewalt (throws).
Other letterwinners include senior
Mackenzie Miller (sprints and throws) and
sophomores Tori Hardesty (distance; top
5 runner in cross country), Beth Griffin
(throws), Ashley Keiber (hurdles and long
jump), Ashley King (sprints and hurdles),
Kari Purdy (middle distance) and Patricia
Riley (pole vault and sprints).
We have eight freshmen to replace
one graduate from last year (Claire
McConnell, a 3-time state qualifier in mid-
dle distance), which will provide numbers,
depth and balance to the program. Our
returnees look forward to the challenge
of defending the NWC crown with
Bluffton and Grove among the top con-
tenders and district titles the last two
seasons, he added.
Providing further depth are new faces
such as senior Katie Kuchefski (long
jump and sprints) and promising fresh-
men like Cierra Adams (middle distance),
Schylar Miller (pole vault and hurdles)
and Kacie Mulholland (long jump and
middle distance), along with classmates
Audrey Bowsher (throws), Shania Johnson
(throws), Emilee Meyer (sprints), Megen
Miller (throws) and Alysa Smith (hurdles).
Assisting McConnell are Brian
McMichael, Rick Orr, Tim Wilson and
Mike Vice.
The Lady Bearcats were set to open
2012 at the Versailles Girls Invitational on
Saturday, March 24, while the boys were
slated to open versus Celina on Tuesday,
March 27.

SPENCERVILLE With only one senior
on the roster for 2012, the Spencerville fast-
pitch softball unit will have a youthful look for
seventh-year head coach Tom Wegesin.
Kaytlynn Warnecke is the lone senior on
the roster and she is our top pitcher returning
from last year; we expect a lot of leadership
from her as an experienced pitcher, Wegesin
said.
Warnecke, a third-year veteran who also
will play third base when she isnt pitching,
isnt the only experienced mound performer
as third-year junior Hanna Keller (outfielder),
sophomore Tori Johnston (third base and out-
fielder) and classmate Haleigh Mull (shortstop
and outfield) also gained innings on the varsity
level last spring.
These four will share the pitching duties
this season. They all were used as pitchers last
season and played elsewhere on the field when
not pitching, Wegesin continued. Possible
players rounding out the infield might be fresh-
man Katie Merriman at first, junior Ali Gilroy
at second or even at shortstop, junior Alyssa
Mullholland at shortstop and whoever isnt
pitching at third.
Our outfield will be returning in junior
Shelby Mullholland (can also play third) in cen-
ter field and Jennifer Burnett (can also catch),
junior Abbie Lee and junior Bretta Williams in
the other outfield positions. Katie could also see
time out there, as well as Alyssa Mullholland.
With 10 returnees likely rotating in the line-
up, with Merriman the only newcomer in the
top 11, Wegesin expects more success in 2012.
This year, we have strong arms at all posi-
tions and we have more speed in the outfield.
This should add to our defense that seemed to
improve with every game last season, Wegesin
continued. We have some good hitters and
hope to generate more runs this year.
The keys to success this season will be
to stay healthy and continue to improve each
game. We need to learn from each game, and
each other, so we can continue to progress as
a team. We must execute under pressure if we
want to compete in the big games.
The coach does have to replace graduated
players like 3-year players Tiffani Wurst (first
base/outfield) and Kaley Core (second base/
shortstop/outfield), along with Jennifer Shimp
(catcher/outfield), Kelsey Oden (third base/out-
field) and Calla Shaffer (outfield/first base).
We have a good group of newcomers that
could possibly impact the team immediately:
junior Haley Calvelage (outfield), freshman
Amanda Crider (outfield/third base/first base),
freshman Whitney Bender (outfield), Mackenzie
Ringwald (outfield/shortstop/catch) and Maddy
Hollar (outfield/second base), Wegesin added.
Team goals include finishing in the top three
in the NWC and playing to our full potential in
the post-season.
Other top teams to watch in the NWC will
be Crestview, Paulding, Ada and Lima Central
Catholic.
Mark Keller is assistant coach to Wegesin.
Spencerville was slated to already open the
2012 softball campaign earlier this week.

baseball unit finished the 2011 campaign
at 7-12 for third-year head coach Brad
Mendenhall, included finishing sixth in
the Northwest Conference at 3-6, with
an inexperienced crew that had lost eight
seniors form the season before.
He begins his fourth year at the
Lancer helm his eighth as a head
varsity coach with a 23-39 mark and
has eight lettermen back in hopes of an
improved 2012 season.
We are experienced; I am hoping
that our game experience will trans-
late into better fundamental baseball,
Mendenhall said.
Back to familiar surroundings in
the Lancer baseball nine are third-
year senior pitcher/catcher Clayton
Longstreth (lefty bat), third-year senior
catcher/outfielder Brady Niese and
classmate Mike Klausing (first base-
man); third-year junior infielder Nick
Leeth; sophomore pitcher/infielder Kyle
Williams, sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Eli Farmer, sophomore outfielder/pitch-
er/designated hitter Connor McCleery
and classmate Troy Patterson (second
baseman).
However, despite that experience,
Mendenhall knows his team has to
improve in one major way.
We scored runs last year but our
team batting average was low; we need
to keep getting better at manufactur-
ing runs, he explained. As well, with
our veteran players returning, I am
putting an empahsis on better defense.
Making the routine plays will be
the key for us to compete on a daily
basis.
That and the development of new-
comers such as junior Tyler Lovett (util-
ity player), junior Jacob Jackson (third
baseman) and sophomore Derek Friesner
(outfielder/catcher) to replace the likes of
the graduated Taylor Hoehn (third base-
man/pitcher; 3 years), Zach Kreischer
(third baseman/outfielder; 2 years) and
Chris Boroff (outfielder/infielder; 2
years).

MIDDLE POINT The Lincolnview
fast-pitch softball unit went 7-12 in
2011 under first-year head coach Kent
McClure.
With seven returning starters from that
edition of Lady Lancers, they are primed
for a solid 2012 campaign.
Three of those returnees are 12th-grad-
ers Carley Springer (third year; infield-
er/outfielder), Holly Diller (third year;
infielder) and Morgan Peel (third year;
infielder).
Two are juniors: Lauren Calvert (third
year; catcher) and Jodie Doner (third year;
center field).
The other two are sophomores;
Kelsey Mohr and ace pitcher Ashley
McClure.
Two others that garnered letters a year
ago: junior pitcher Courtney Gorman and
sophomore Macey Ashbaugh; should
either be in the starting lineup or provid-
ing depth.
We have a lot of last years team back
but are still relatively young. Pitching
should be better with two freshman pitch-
ers to help out Ashley and junior Courtney,
both that have a year under their belt,
Coach McClure noted. You look at us;
we are a veteran team but who will step up
and be a leader of this team? The potential
and ability is there; we just have to per-
form and execute.
Two starters are gone from a year ago:
3-year first sacker Paige McClure due
to graduation and junior Kaitlin Brant at
shortstop due to a knee injury suffered in
basketball.
Also gone due to graduation are let-
terwinners Leslie Hicks (3 years in the
infield), Sami Jones and Danielle Mercer.

Britney Foust.
Teams to watch for in the Northwest
Conference include, of course, the
Crestview Knights, he added. They
hold the top spot in the NWC; you can
never count them out. I say it could be us
but we have to do it on the field not just
talk about it.

COLUMBUS GROVE Cory
King is on the verge of completing
his first decade as the head man of the
Columbus Grove baseball unit.
He hopes to build on his 107-122
mark coming off last springs 12-11
edition (fifth in both the Northwest
Conference 5-4 and Putnam
County League 2-4) and go
beyond the Division IV sectional
finals.
He hopes to do so with the lucky
number of seven versatile lettermen,
led by third-year senior Zach Barrientes
(shortstop/pitcher), third-year junior
Matt Jay (catcher/pitcher/third base-
man) and veterans Aaron Vorst (senior
pitcher/outfielder), Brandon Benroth
(junior second baseman/catcher/third
baseman), Blake Hoffman (junior out-
fielder/shortstop/pitcher), junior Trey
Roney (third baseman/pitcher/first
baseman) and classmate Brady Shafer
(outfielder/pitcher).
What we do well is play sound,
fundamental defense, with potential to
score a lot of runs, King noted. What
we need to work on is the need for
underclassmen to step up on the mound
and log numerous quality innings. We
have no dominant number 1 pitcher that
will shut down teams on a consistent
basis. Therefore, the team will rely
heavily on scoring a high number of
runs per game.
With the graduation of the likes of
4-year senior and ace pitcher Jacob
Miller, 3-year senior Ryan Birkemeier
and veterans Brock Graham, Matt
Jennell and Spencer Wolfe, King will
need a group of former junior varsity
guys to step into the lineup and either
provide starting positions or backup
help.
Promising newcomers include junior
Kody Griffith (first baseman), junior
second sacker Clay Diller, junior
infielder Trent Vorst and sophomore
pitcher/infielder Joshua Verhoff.
As well, the remainder of the varsity
(and junior varsity roster) has senior
Connor Schroeder (outfielder), junior
Damon Beutler (third baseman), junior
Eric Otto (outfielder), sophomore Zach
Brinkman (outfielder), sophomore
pitcher/outfielder Riley Brubaker,
sophomore outfielder Brett Sampson,
sophomore Mason Smith (catcher),
freshman David Bogart (outfielder),
freshman outfielder Travis Ellerbrock,
freshman outfielder Nick Johnson,
freshman pitcher/infielder Elisha Jones,
freshman pitcher/utility Tanner Neu and
freshman third baseman Zach Shafer.
We look to continue our summer
success of qualifying for the district
ACME. We return a solid nucleus of
letterwinners to help lead the younger
players into the 2012 season and look
to compete for the championship title
of both the NWC and PCL, King
added.
Assistant coaches include Scott Palte
(6th season) and Brandon Hovest (1st
season).

COLUMBUS GROVE Brian
Schroeder finished 14-10 in his first sea-
son at the head of the Columbus Grove
varsity fast-pitch softball program (3-3
in the Putnam County League, good for
fourth place, and 5-4 in the Northwest
Conference, good for 5th).
Ten letterwinners are back from the
Division IV team that hopes to go
beyond last years sectionals.
The most experienced of the crew is
fourth-year senior lefty-swinging Cece
Utendorf (second base), along with
third-year senior Emily Frick (pitcher/
infielder).
The third veteran senior is first sacker
Ashley Langhals.
Third-year juniors Haley Grigsby
(lefty-swinging outfielder) and Katelyn
Scott (shortstop), along with second-
year juniors Bobbi Heckel (pitcher/util-
ity) and Sarah Bogart (third base), add
more experience, with a trio of veteran
sophomores Micah Stechschulte
(outfielder), lefty-swinging outfielder
Deanna Kleman and backstop Katie
Roose.
We have 10 returning letterwinners
from last years squad, so I am hoping
that experience will carry over into this
year. As long as we continue to work
hard and maintain the proper focus, we
should be competitive in both the PCL
and NWC, the coach noted.
Schroeder only has a pair of 3-year
letterwinners to replace, including PCL
and NWC first-teamer Taylor Haines
and PCL Honorable-Mention Erica
Walker.
We lost two quality seniors from
last years squad. Taylor and Erica pro-
vided us with a lot of leadership on the
field last year and we will be counting
on our three seniors to fill that void,
he added.
He is looking especially to prom-
ising newcomers Kara Birkemeier
(sophomore outfielder) and Andrea
Blankemeyer (first baseman), along
with freshman Hope Schroeder (third
baseman/pitcher).
Travis Gallmeier is the assistant
coach/junior varsity coach.
Grove was slated to already open the
2012 campaign.

COLUMBUS GROVE Chris
Grothaus has had his share of state qualifi-
ers for the Columbus Grove boys track and
field team during his six previous seasons.
Last year, he had three: senior defend-
ing Division III pole vault champion Tyler
Wolfe (relays), Parker Schroeder, who fin-
ished sixth in the discus, and Josh Utrup,
ninth in the discus.
With Wolfe returning among 15 veterans
returning from the Putnam County League
champions and Northwest Conference
runner-ups, Grothaus expects to have a
few more attaining high levels of success
in 2012.
This is the deepest and most balanced
team we have had in my seven years. We
should be very strong in the vault and long
jump, Grothaus said. We also have our
entire group of distance runners back. We
look to have quality hurdlers and strong
relays as well.
The other lettermen looking to make
great strides in 2012 include 6-3 senior
Wade Heffner (800/400 relays), 6-3 senior
Dane Stechschulte (800 meters and relays),
senior Caleb Grothaus (long jump and
relays), senior Trent Kerns (sprints) and
6-5 classmate Jeff Birkemeier (high jump
and long jump); junior Jake Graham (dis-
tance/relays), junior Collin Grothaus (pole
vault/relays/hurdles), 6-2 junior Derek
Rieman (hurdles), junior Alex Shafer (dis-
tance), junior Trevor Schroeder (throws),
6-2 junior Dakota Vogt (high jump/discus)
and classmate Grant Schroeder (distance);
and sophomores Alec Gladwell (sprints)
and Will Selhorst (distance).
Losing two state qualifiers in the discus
is tough to replace, Coach Grothaus contin-
ued. We look to be very strong and deep in
all field events. Our distance events are stron-
ger than they have been in a long time. We
feel we have the ability to advance numer-
ous athletes to the state meet if they meet
their potential. The key is staying healthy.
Besides Schroeder and Utrup, other letter-
men lost from last year include 3-year veter-
ans Colby Meuleman (relays, sprints, middle
distance), Luke Kohls (high jump), Adam
Bair (throws) and Devin Verhoff (sprints),
along with 2-year lettermen Curt Meyer
(distance) and Dakota Fischer (sprints).
The coach, assisted by Dan Risser, Bob
Baxter, Rick Maag and Mike Brodwolf,
will look to promising newcomers Jordan
Travis (senior; high jump/relays), freshman
David Martin (sprints), Brandon Cotrell
(pole vault/sprints), Colton Grothaus (dis-
tance) and Joey Warnacke (pole vault).
In the NWC, look for Spencerville
and Bluffton to be strong once again.
Crestview continues to push towards the
top of the league as well; we are hoping
to be in the hunt this year in a very strong
NWC, Coach Grothaus added. In the
PCL, we hope our depth can lead us to
back-to-back titles. Leipsic and Pandora-
Gilboa always have very good athletes.
Groves boys were slated to open the
season earlier this week.

COLUMBUS GROVE Tim Staley
had a youthful look on his 2011 girls track
and field team.
He will get the dividends this spring as
11 letterwinners and four others that did get
some experience last spring return for 2012.
The letterwinners include four region-
al qualifiers in senior Brooke Brubaker
(regional finalist in 4x200 and 4x100
relays; sprints), senior Riley Eversole
(high jump, jumps and relays), senior
Nicole Langhals (4x100 relay, hurdles
and relays) and sophomore regional final-
ist Julia Wynn (4x200 and 4x100 relays;
sprints).
The other letterwinners include senior
Amber Herron (distance), junior Cassie
Stechschulte (high jump and relays), junior
Jessi Smith (hurdles and relays), sopho-
more Aubrey Fruchey (throws), sopho-
more Stacy Hovest (distance), sophomore
Sydni Smith (hurdles and sprints) and
classmate Megan Verhoff (throws).
Other returners include senior Jordi
Schramm (distance), junior Melissa
Amstutz (distance), sophomore Amy Bair
(throws) and classmate Meghan Schroeder
(sprints).
We have a good balance this year. The
upperclassmen will have to step up and
be leaders, Staley noted. Our strength
should be in the relays, throws and jumps.
We have several promising freshmen that
should add to our depth and scoring.
Injuries have been a major concern.
We hope to contend for the PCL as
well as the NWC.
Three seniors graduated from a year
ago: Cora Diller (sprints and discus),
Nikki Ricker (distance) and Mackenzie
Schroeder (throws).
With so many veterans back, Staley can
ease the transition of promising newcom-
ers such as junior Tessa Diller (sprints),
junior Alexa Halker (distance), junior
Quincy Miller (distance) and a boatload of
freshmen: Becca Endicott (throws), Rachel
Kohls (sprints), Megan Langhals (dis-
tance), Sydney McCluer (hurdles and pole
vault), Alexis Ricker (distance), Annie
Schramm (throws), Dannielle Schramm
(throws), Sarah Schroeder (sprints), Mady
Schroeder (hurdles) and Kristin Wynn
(sprints).
Connie Arthur and Rick Maag serve as
assistant coaches.

ELI DA BULLDOGS
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
ELIDA Todd Grapner begins his
inaugural season at the Elida baseball
helm with six lettermen back from a
year ago.
Included in the group are third-
year senior Dalton Martz (infielder/
pitcher), third-year senior Mackenzie
Hampshire (infielder/outfielder),
junior Jake Porter (infielder/outfield-
er/pitcher), junior Nickoli Sackinger
(infielder), junior Ian Haidle (catcher/
infielder/pitcher) and junior David
Diller (infielder/pitcher).
We are pretty young with only
two seniors returning. Pitching and
the ability to make plays defensively
will be vital to our success this sea-
son, Grapner said. We feel that we
have a chance to be competitive as our
younger guys gain experience.
However, Grapner knows that this
team is behind before it begins 2012
due to success in another venue, though
it may pay off in the long run.
The state tournament run by the
basketball team will play a role early
as we play six games in the week that
begins two days after the state tourna-
ment. Being without the basketball
players has forced guys into roles
that will help us be more versatile
as the season progresses, he contin-
ued.
Promising newcomers include junior
Taylor Bly (catcher/infielder/pitcher),
junior Drew Laing (infielder), junior
Dillon Slusher (infielder), junior Jesse
Wheeler (infielder/outfielder/pitcher)
and junior Brandon Stinson (outfielder).
They, along with the rest of
the varsity: sophomores Max
Stambaugh(catcher/infielder/pitcher)
and Logan Frysinger (outfielder) and
freshmen Travis Watkins (infielder/
pitcher) and Adam Purdy (outfielder/
pitcher); will have to replace the grad-
uated Andrew Clevenger (outfielder/
pitcher), Austin Zuber (infielder/
pitcher), Ryan Musgrave (outfielder),
southpaw pitcher Adam Von Sossan
and Austin Wray (outfielder).
The Western Buckeye League will
be very tough this year with sev-
eral all-state caliber players scattered
throughout the league, he added. As
always, Defiance will be the team to
beat but right there will be Shawnee,
Wapak and Bath. Our goal will always
be to finish at the top of the league and
make a deep run in the tournament.
Randy Prince is the varsity assis-
tant.
The junior varsity unit, headed
by Dan Larimore and Zac Miller,
has sophomores Justin Murphy (out-
fielder), Riley Overholt (infielder/
pitcher), Logan Frysinger (outfielder),
Austin Ruble (infielder/pitcher), Tyler
McComb (catcher/outfielder), Chris
Groh (catcher/infielder/pitcher), Kyle
Hambleton (infielder/pitcher), Austin
Guerrero (outfielder/pitcher), Max
Stambaugh (catcher/infielder/pitch-
er) and Alan Tyrrell (infielder); and
freshmen Jesse Guerrero (outfielder),
Austin Allmeier (infielder/pitcher),
Travis Watkins (catcher/infielder/
pitcher), Adam Purdy (outfielder/
pitcher), Garrett Brinkman (catcher/
infielder/pitcher) and Jared Blymyer
(infielder/pitcher).
Elida was slated to open the new
varsity campaign for the new coach on
Monday, March 26, at Fort Jennings.
The JV was slated to open Tuesday,
March 27, at Miller City.

ELIDA Mike Eilerman has
a handful of returning starters for
his third Elida fast-pitch softball
crew (7-36 2-year record), hoping
to improve upon last springs 3-16
mark.
Leading the pack returning starters
are fourth-year senior catcher/center-
fielder Jenn Eilerman (.396 batting
average, .407
on-base per-
centage, .434
slugging per-
centage, 9 runs
scored, 15 sto-
len bases), fourth-year senior Alex
Hambleton (outfielder), third-year
senior Jess Guerrero (third base; .204
BA), third-year junior pitcher/first
sacker Aryanne Brown (.226 BA;
0-9 pitching, 58.4 innings, 31 strike-
outs, 31 walks, .348 earned run aver-
age) and classmate Tanesha Manley
(infielder).
As well, a sixth letterwinner,
Ericka Smith (junior first baseman/
outfielder) is expected to step into the
starting nine.
We have a number of good young
players coming into the program; we
also have a good blend of returning
letterwinners, Eilerman said.
However, he does have to find
replacements for five departed start-
ers/letterwinners: 3-year player Jordan
Haidle (shortstop/catcher, .255 BA,
10 runs, 7 SBs), 3-year player Lindsay
Peters (; pitcher/second baseman;
.226 BA; 3-7 record in 42.9 IPs, .321
ERA) and Kayla Smith (first base-
man/outfielder), 2-year player Jess
Dunham (outfielder) and letterwinner
Kacie Roberts (outfielder), as well as
some players that chose not to return
to the diamond this spring.
We are still not fundamentally
where I would want us to be; we also
need to develop our softball IQ, he
continued.
With freshman Sabrina Kline
(infielder) in particular a promis-
ing newcomer to watch, Eilerman
will also be looking to the follow-
ing: junior Lauren Greeley (catcher),
junior Taylor Murphy (infielder/out-
fielder), sophomore Caitlyn Schroyer
(pitcher/first baseman), freshman
Jenna Halpern (infielder) and class-
mate Taylor Thompson (outfielder);
to fill in the open spots.
We will have a good mix of vet-
eran and young players. The key will
be to get the right players into the
right positions, Eilerman added. If
we get good pitching and play solid
defense, we should be able to com-
pete in the always-tough WBL.
The WBL will be very tough
again this year. Teams to look out
for are Bath, Shawnee, Celina and
Defiance, among others.
To do so, Elida must improve its
.199 team batting average, as well as
its run production of 3.1 per game.
They hoped to have gotten a start
toward that goal already as they
opened the 2012 season earlier this
week, especially at the Crestview
quad on Saturday, March 24.

ELIDA Elida boys track and
field head man F. Kevin Bowers
had a veteran team last spring, with
26 lettermen back from the season
before.
This year, his 15th at the helm for
the Division II program, he doesnt
have as many veterans but 17 is still
a good place to start for 2012.
Eight of them are in their final sea-
sons of high school: fourth-year senior
Austin Etzler (long jump/4x100
relay/4x200 relay/4x400 relay),
fourth-year senior Keaton Greeley
(4x100/4x200/4x400), third-year
senior Sam Kerber (800/4X400) and
second-year men Keaton Brenneman
(3,200/1,600/800), Theran Carroll
(shot/discus), Michael Lee (long
jump/400/4X400), Jeremy Newby
(coming off foot injury in January;
4x100/4x200/100) and Chris
Radebaugh (1,600/3,200/4x800).
Eight more lettermen from
a 1-11 dual-meet team that fin-
ished 10th in the Western Buckeye
League (including sixth in the
4x200-meter relay) and 19th at dis-
trict are juniors: third-year Kane
Brookman (1,600/3,200/4x800),
third-year Mitchell Knotts (pole
vault/hurdles/4x100), third-year
Quentin Poling (400-meter 7th-
place district finisher, third in
the WBL at 400 and fourth in
the shot; shot/discus/400/4x400),
third-year Nick Pauff (pole
v a u l t / 4 x 1 0 0 / 4 x 2 0 0 / 4 x 4 0 0 )
and veterans Dameer Relford
(400/4x100/4x200/4x400), Anthony
Sumpter (4x100/4x200/100/200),
De s h e a Hu g h e s
(100/200/4x100/4x200) and Uriel
Sellers (4x100/4x200/100/200).
The final veteran is soph-
omore Darius Relford (4x400/
hurdles/4x100).

One of those who will be counted
on to help in the hurdles is promising
newcomer Kevin Russell (junior;
110-meter hurdles), while freshman
Clark Etzler (4x100/4x200/4x400) is
expected to help in the relay sprints.
Assisting Bowers are Al Clum, Gary

ELIDA The Elida boys varsity

in the Western Buckeye League and
fifth in the WBL tournament, good
for 5th overall under first-year
coach Tyson May.
With only one letterwinner
senior Cody Kerns; the only 12th-
grader on the roster and no start-
ers returning from that edition of
Bulldog netters (that finished in the
regional quarterfinals of the Ohio
Tennis Coaches Association Team
Tournament but had no district quali-
fiers), this years crew could officially
be called rebuilding from the ground
up.
Our obvious weakness this sea-
son is lack of experience. Strengths
are the youthful energy we
have and the desire to improve, May
noted.
May will need to look at improve-
ments especially from promising new-
comers Ardie Sayoto (junior), Aric
Thompson (junior; once he gets his
tennis form after the basketball teams
state tournament run) and junior Chris
Ellison.
May must replace the graduated
Mitchell Chavez, Arwin Sayoto,
Corbin Ellison, Nick Fraley, Cody
Sanderson, Justin Miller and Dylan
McDorman.
He will look to a group
of newcomers such as junior Jordan
Greeley, junior Asa Swihart, junior
Jeff Strayer, junior Bryan Romey,
junior Nick Kempton and classmate
Chris Reyes; and sophomore Kody
Ley.
This inexperienced but talented
team will strive to finish near the top
of the WBL, May added.

McBride returns very experienced baseball roster
season, which should be a strength, as well as experience
with 14 lettermen returning. At this point, fielding is a
weakness, McBride noted. To be successful this year,
we need for the pitchers and defense to raise their level of
play while the offense evolves as the season progresses.
Three lettermen graduated from a year ago, led by
second-team PCL player Kristopher Osterhage (.328 BA,
5 HR, 16 RBIs), Logan Recker and Tyler Hoffman.
Jeremy Stober serves as the varsity assistant, along
with junior varsity coach Adam Huber. The remainder of
the volunteer staff includes varsity coach Brian Klausing,
varsity assistant Ted Verhoff, JV assistant Ryan Horstman
and ACME coach Joel Rampe.
The rest of the varsity (and leading the JV) roster has
juniors Adam Knueve (outfield), 6-2 Ryan Korte (pitcher/
outfield), Ryan Erhart (infield), 6-3 Rob Kleman (infield),
Kyle Vorst (outfield) and 6-3, 230-pound Kyle Landin

By JIM METCALFE

KALIDA Kelly Coble has built a
19-32 mark in her three seasons at the
helm of the Kalida fast-pitch softball
unit.
With 12 letterwinners returning from
the 9-8 edition of LadyCats in 2011 (4-2
in the Putnam County League, good for
third place, and finishing in the district
semifinals), Coble has plans for adding
a lot more wins to the left side of the
column.
Strengths for the season should be
good leadership from our upperclass-
man; we also have eight returning start-
ers and two other letterwinners from
last season, which will
give us lots of experi-
ence from our district
team last year. We
will have great depth
at every position this
year, including pitcher,
Coble noted.
The returning starters include 1st-
Team PCL/1st-Team All-District
Summer Holtkamp (junior outfielder;
.479 batting average, .615 on-base per-
centage, 10 runs batted in, 31 stolen
bases), senior Erika Brinkman (catcher/
outfielder; Honorable-Mention PCL; 5
SBs), senior Devon Hundley (shortstop/
third base; .380 BA, 11 RBIs), junior
pitcher/first sacker Emily Schnipke (2nd-
Team PCL; .371 BA, 10 RBIs), junior
Julia Vandemark (second base/third
base/shortstop/outfield; 2nd-Team PCL;
.472 BA, 23 stolen bases, 9 RBIs), junior
Kaylyn Verhoff (second base/first base/
catcher; Honorable-Mention PCL; .378
BA, 17 RBIs, 14 runs), junior second
sacker Amy Smith (Honorable-Mention
PCL; .310 BA, 19 RBIs) and classmate
Kayla Siefker (outfield/third base; .349
BA, 11 RBIs).
As well, the other four letterwinners
include junior Skylar Basinger (second
base/outfielder; .375 BA, 6 SBs) and
junior first baseman Andrea Bellmann.
Sophomore Paige Wurth (outfield/sec-
ond base) played in seven games and
sophomore Whitney Smith (pitcher/third
base) played in 10 games.
However, Coble has two but only
two letterwinners to replace from
last season: first-team all-PCL Michelle
Jorrey (1st-Team PCL; .472 BA, .611%
slugging, 17 hits, 13 runs, 3 Doubles, 17
RBIs) and Emily Turnwald.
We lost a lot of offense with the
Kalida Wildcats softball unit for the 2012 season include, front row (l-r) Whitney smith, Megan Vine, Makenna Vorst, Casey
Wehri, Olivia Schmenk, Taylor Siefer and Summer Holtkamp. Second row (l-r) Julia Vandemark, Kaylyn Verhoff, Nicki Spicer,
Melissa Jorrey, Mariah Soepker, Rebecca Brinkman, Abbey Tschuor, Erika Brinkman and Skylar Basinger. Third row (l-r) assis-
tant coach Sherry Luebrecht, Devon Hundley, Nicole Recker, Alexis Vorst, Paige Wurth, Kayla Siefker, Emily Schnipke, Andrea
Bellmann, Katelyn Kortokrax, Amy Smith, assistant coach Kris Thomas and head coach Kelly Coble.
Kalida softball
LadyCat hardballers ready for action in 12
graduation of Michelle, so we are going
to be looking for players to step up and
help fill that spot in the lineup, Coble
added. We look to be very competitive
this year in our league and non-league
games. We look to advance further than
districts this season.
The PCL will be very even this year
and we will be looking for more wins
this year.
The remainder of the varsity roster
(and junior varsity) will consist of sopho-
more Nicki Spicer (catcher/third base),
catcher Katelyn Kortokrax (second base/
first base), sophomore outfielder Taylor
Siefer, freshman Melissa Jorrey (catch-
er/first base), freshman Nicole Recker
(infielder/outfielder), freshman McKenna
Vorst (third base), freshman Megan Vine
(pitcher), freshman Olivia Schmenk
(outfield/third base/pitcher), freshman
Mariah Doepker (shortstop/third base),
Casey Wehri (outfield), Becca Brinkman
(outfield), Alexis Vorst (first base) and
Abbey Tschour (outfield).
The varsity assistant coach is Sharon
Luebrecht, while Angela Unverferth is
the JV coach.

Crestview
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
CONVOY Owen Pugh has built up quite a fast-
pitch softball program at Crestview High School over
his 22 seasons (366-133).
Last years unit added to the legacy, ending up 21-5
(grabbing an undefeated Northwest Conference title at
9-0) and as the Division IV state runners-up.
He has eight letterwinners from that team to build
a veteran 2012 edition around: senior Maddie Etzler
(second baseman), senior Taylor Hamrick (infielder/
outfielder), senior Holly Genth (shortstop), senior
Danica Hicks (third baseman), senior McKenzie Nofer
(outfielder), senior MacKenzie Richard (catcher/out-
fielder), senior Taylor Springer (first baseman) and
sophomore Kirstin Hicks (pitcher/outfielder).
With this experience, Pugh figures defense will be
the foundation for this crew of Lady Knights. That will
need to be true with the departure of the starting bat-
tery in captain Jessica Burger (catcher; led the team in
hitting, on-base average, runs batted in, doubles, triples
and walks) and pitcher Maddie Preston (16-3, threw 114
innings, had 93 strikeouts, 5.71 Ks per game average;
2.21 earned run average).
I expect our defense to be very good this year with
all of the returning letterwinners that we have. Our start-
ing pitcher and catcher are gone from last years state
runner-up team; it will be critical that we can continue
to develop our pitching staff and that our catcher (likely
Richard) continues to improve her skills, he said. We
also lost 30 percent of our hits to graduation last year,
so it will also be very important to work on our hitting
skills. Last years seniors were also great leaders. We
are going to have to get good leadership from our
seniors to pull the team together in order to accomplish
the goals that we have set for ourselves.
Junior newcomer Brittany Helt (outfielder) might
also see time behind the plate.
Pugh is particularly anticipating promising new-
comers Terra Crowle (freshman pitcher/outfielder)
and MacKenzie Riggenbaugh (freshman catcher/out-
fielder).
Other potential varsity players include senior
Morgan McClure (outfielder), senior Leigha Taylor
(pitcher/outfielder) and junior Mariah Henry (outfield-
er).
I think that we can have a good year but we are
going to have to work very hard to achieve the goals
that we have set for ourselves and everyone elses
expectations, he added. I think that Ada, Bluffton and
Paulding will be strong in the conference. The Paulding
game for us will be huge because it is played so early in
the season; I feel that the winner of that game will put
themselves in a good position to win the conference.
Assistant coaches include Carl Etzler, Cindy
Perkins, Bob Perkins and Katie Perkins.
Crestview hosted its own quad on Saturday, March
24, to commence 2012.
State runner-up Lady Knights bring back veteran crew
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
CONVOY James Lautzenheiser took over the
Crestview track and field program last year.
On the girls side, they finished 14-33 (includes
duals, tri-meets and invitational meets) and eight letter-
winners returning in 2012: seniors Erika Frey (Hurdles/
Relays) and state qualifier Layne Callow (Sprints/
Relays), juniors Elizabeth Saylor (Distance/Relays),
Courtney Perrott (Distance/Relays) and Darrian Hoerig
(Hurdles/Relays) and sophomores Sidney Schaffner
(Sprints/Relays), Janelle May (Distance/Relays) and
Grace Callow (Sprints/Relays).
With 33 total girls out five seniors, eight juniors,
seven sophomores and 13 freshmen Lautzenheiser
has plenty of options to replace the graduated Ami
Callow (Berea College; Sprints/Relays).
He is especially looking to promising newcomers
in sophomore Chelsea Hancock (Distance) and fresh-
men Hali Finfock (Distance), Paige Michael (Hurdles),
Jamie Moore (Sprints), Whitney Smart (Distance) and
Bekka Tracey (Throws).
Our girls squad is relatively young but is also
anchored by some veteran leadership that has expe-
rienced a significant amount of success over the past
2-3 seasons. Our goal as a coaching staff will be to
identify which events our freshmen and sophomores
can be successful at and then make moves to prepare
them for the future, he noted. Specifically, we will be
challenged to make dramatic strides in our field events,
as they have been less successful as our running
events over the past 2-3 seasons. Look for our stronger
events to be hurdles, relays and short sprints.
Our girls 4x400-meter has been our state tourna-
ment meal-ticket for the past two seasons and Erika,
Courtney and Layne are looking to replace Ami Callow
on their way back to Jesse Owens in early June. This
years district tournament will be held at Spencerville
for our boys/girls teams and the composition of the
former Minster district lineup has been strengthened
with the addition of Spencerville as a host and par-
ticipating school. Area coaches will be quick to point
out that this years Division III district tournament at
Spencerville may be one of, if not the, toughest open-
ing rounds across the state of Ohio for boys/girls track
& field. Both of our squads are excited to be a part of
this tournament and recognize it as a chance to run
with and against some of the best talent in the state.
The remainder of the roster has seniors Beth
Klopfenstein, Shelby Minnich and Erika Mohr; juniors
Christine Errett, Cora Finfrock, Morgan Klinger, Amanda
Lobsiger and Sydney Waltmire; sophomores Chelsea
Hancock, Beth Heiser, Cassy McConnell and Sophie
Smith; and freshmen Vicky Callow, Bella Chorvas,
Kristin Cramer, Kylee Gent, Chelsea Gephart, Taylor
Hughes, Reghan Waltmire and Monica Winhover.
This spring, our girls are looking to build upon a
4th-place finish in the Northwest Conference champi-
onships. A realistic goal would be to attempt to crack
into the top 3 finishers in the conference standings,
he explained. Utilizing the Van Wert County meet and
other invitational meets like Versailles, Minster and
Archbold for event preparation and focus will be key to
our tournament ramp-up.
On the boys side, six return to a 20-29 team
from 2011): seniors Chase Walters (Thrower), Nick
Cunningham (Sprints/Relays) and Shawn Clouatre
(Pole Vault/Relays) and juniors Shelby Ripley (Distance/
Relays), Avery Jones (Sprints/Relays) and Joel Genter
(Distance/Relays).
However, with eight seniors, 12 juniors, 11 sopho-
mores and 19 freshmen, the coach has even more
options for 2012.
With a boys squad of 50 student-athletes, our
team goal will be to make sure that we can put the
right pieces in the right places to be successful at the
conference, county and tournament levels in 2012. Our
boys clearly have been more successful in sprints and
distance events over the past few seasons but this year
may be more well-rounded for the team, he continued.
The addition of nearly 20 freshmen may anchor our
roster in size but could add a talented pool of dynamic
athletes to take our squad to the next level. Our team
has high hopes for an increased showing at the NWC,
Van Wert County and tournament level. Field events
should be anchored by Chase and Shawn but our
jumps are wide open for internal competition at this
point. Middle- and long-distance events will be high-
lighted with a plethora of talent that has carried over
quite smoothly from the very successful cross country
season. Sprints, hurdles and relays will be filled out by
a mix of young and veteran talent. Look out for a fast
team that is focusing on mid-May event execution.
Promising newcomers include juniors Trevor Roop
(Sprints/Relays) and Trevor Saylor (Sprints/Relays)
and freshmen Branden Clayton (Sprints/Distance/
Relays), Mycah Grandstaff (Distance/Relays), Malcolm
Oliver (Sprints/Relays/Jumps) and Preston Zaleski
(Sprints/Relays/Hurdles).
Gone from a year ago are starters Garret Gleckler
(Malone College; Distance/Relays) and Rob Cook
(Bluffton College; Throws/Jumps).
The rest of the roster has seniors Nick Bauer,
Jared Burger, Nate Mladenovic, Josh Ray and Zack
Schaadt; juniors Zach Burdette, Shayne Goings,
Thomas Lichtensteiger, Jared Long, Josh Ream, Isaac
Simerman and Zach Taylor; sophomores Copsey
Bogle, Moses Boroff, Zen Burdette, Jacob Germann,
Preston Hammond, Michael Hansard, Chris Johnson,
Daniel Joseph, Jarrett Krick, Tanner Skelton and
Jon Young; and freshmen Andrew Burnett, Donovan
Carmean, Derek Coil, Austin Cunningham, Hunter
Farris, Jon Germann, Corban Grubb, Marcus Howell,
Zach Jellison, Eli Jones, Caleb Morrow, Seth Moser,
Brett Ripley, Jake Tatum and Chance Van Fleet.
We are hosting the NWC championships this year
and our goal is to compete for a championship finish.
Last season, our boys finished in fourth place, and we
believe that we have the
talent and the numbers to make a push for con-
ference legitimacy in 2012, he added. Always be
on the lookout from track powerhouses like Bluffton,
Columbus Grove and Spencerville for well-rounded
finishes from their boys teams.
Additionally, our boys want to make a run at
knocking Van Wert off from the championship title
trophy at the Van Wert County Meet (at Lincolnview)
this season.
Lady Knights opened at Versailles meet Saturday,
March 24, while the boys open Thursday, March 29, at

KITCHENS - BATHS - APPLIANCES
By JIM METCALFE
[email protected]
VAN WERT The old maxim in base-
ball is that pitching is the key to success.
That is even truer in fast-pitch softball.
That is the biggest concern for Van Wert
softball coach Mike McClure as he lost
both of his pitchers from last seasons 10-7
mark (4-5 in the Western Buckeye League):
Morgan Williams (.491 batting average, .736
slugging percentage, .559 on-base percent-
age, 12 runs batted in, 10 doubles) and Tori
Thompson (catcher); and will have to find
hurlers for 2012.
As well, Samantha Fiegal (infielder;
.373/.569/.404, 8 RBIs, 12 runs scored,
4 2Bs, 2 home runs), Brittany Kallas
(.342/.342/.419, 8 sacrifices), Tiffany
Pierce, Toni Acquaviva, Danielle Hitchcock
(.474 OB%), Lindsey Mosier and Brooke
Grieshaber have moved on.
The pitching staff will be young and inex-
perienced, with varsity newcomer Jessica
Klausing as a junior along with three fresh-
men doing the bulk of the pitching, McClure
noted. That is our key; how quickly we can
get varsity experience on the mound.
This years crew will be built around four
veterans: all-WBL honorable-mention pick
Brittany Bigham (sophomore first baseman;
.279/.605/.388, 14 RBIs, 5 2Bs, 3 HRs),
senior Gretchen Klinker (second baseman;
.313/.417/.473, 8 RBs, 5 2Bs), junior Brooke
Fuerst (shortstop; 2 2Bs, 7 RBIs) and class-
mate Kelsey Saylor (catcher; .341/.488/.364,
6 RBIs, 4 2Bs).
I expect defense and hitting to be the
strengths of this season. In fact, I anticipate
us having a chance to be great on defense
and get a lot of offense; well need it to help
our pitching, McClure said.
He will be relying on key newcomers
like Alyssa Bowen (third baseman), Maggie
Almindinger (left field), Emily Beair (center
field) and Melissa Roop (right field).
Expectations are very high we look to
compete for the WBL and have a strong
tournament. Bath is always tough, along
with Shawnee, he added.
They will have to improve last springs
.286 team batting average and 4.8 runs-per-
game average.
The Lady Cougars have been sched-
uled to have three games under their belts
already.

VAN WERT Van Wert head boys
tennis coach Mitch Price finished 6-6 last
spring, including 4-5 good for sixth in
the Western Buckeye League.
With two letterwinners returning in
Nathan Knodel and Jon Lisa, Price
hopes to gain needed experience quickly
in 2012.
We have a young team overall but this
group is very eager to work hard and get
better. Right now, we just need to gain
some experience, which will come quickly,
Price asserted.
With the departure of a trio due to gradu-
ation, especially the first singles of Jacob
Hood, along with Seth Zuber and Bryan
Zinsmaster, as well as others that chose
not to go out, Price will have to find most of
his starting five from newcomers.
Those that are in the lead for doing
just that are the likes of Eric Yeung, Justin
Price, Alex Baer, Josh Hill, Trey Stemen,
Luke Stevens and Robbie Trittschuh.
As well, the remainder of the combat-
ants are Kevin Yeung, Eli Alvarez, Kory
Schlatter, Richie Espinoza and Jeremy
Kline.
We have a young team but our number
one, Nathan Knodel, has improve a lot from
last season. Our league aspirations are to
finish fourth or better, Price added.
Van Wert is slated to commence 2012
Friday, March 30, at Wapakoneta.
