Standard operating procedure (SOP) for terminal cleaning of inpatient wards

1. Purpose
To guide effective and safe cleaning of in inpatient wards

2. Scope
This SOP is applicable in all inpatient rooms including ICU and isolation room. It
provides specific guidance for all staff directly involved in the cleaning of
premises and equipment in inpatient department.

3. Responsibility
The responsibility for cleaning is for assigned cleaners with ward nurse
supervision

4. Required standard
 Floors are cleaned regularly with a frequency that's appropriate to the level of
contamination in each area.
 Cleaning staff are trained on proper cleaning procedures, including use of
personal protective equipment (PPE).

5. Equipment and material requirements


 Detergent solution
 Chlorine-based disinfectant solution
 Warning sign
 PPE
 Infectious/other waste bin/bag
 Mop
 Laundry container

6. Risks
 Infection
 Slip and fall accident
 Injuries

7. Key safety rules


 Use caution signs or barriers to indicate wet floors and prevent slips and falls.

 Follow manufacturer's instructions when handling cleaning chemicals and


ensure they are stored appropriately.
 Use color-coded cleaning materials to prevent cross-contamination between
different areas and surfaces.
 Ensure all cleaning equipment and tools are properly maintained and
sanitized to prevent the growth of microorganisms.
 Wear personal protective equipment and perform hand hygiene
 Treat all blood and body spills as potentially infectious
 Use warning/hazard signs
 Follow the standard operating procedure for cleaning

8. Time:
 Wards / patient room following patient discharge or transfer,
 Operation room at least every 24 hour, or more often as necessary.

9. Procedure
 Hand hygiene
 Put on appropriate PPE / heavy duty glove, gown, apron, head cover,
protective eye wear, boots/
 Place warning/hazard signs to indicate that a cleaning task is taking place
 Remove soiled/used personal care items for reprocessing or disposal
 Remove facility-provided linens for reprocessing or disposal
 Inspect window. If soiled, clean blinds on-site, and remove curtains for
laundering.
 Reprocess all reusable patient care equipment
 Clean all low- and high-touch surfaces with detergent solution
 Disinfect all surfaces with 0.1% or 0.5% chlorine solution
 Allow the disinfectant to remain wet on thearea for the required contact time
 Rinse the area with clean water to removedisinfectant residue.
 Allow the area to dry (before removingthe warning or hazard sign).
 Clean (scrub) and disinfect handwashing sinks
 Dispose of materials as infectious waste.
 Remove PPE and dispose of it in infectious wasteif disposable; if it is
reusable (for example, linen) send for laundering
 When finished, clean and dry equipment, or leave to dry
 Remove PPE
 Perform hand hygiene
