Project Summary: Load Frequency Control with MPC

1. Project Overview

The project involves designing a Load Frequency Control (LFC) system for a two-area hybrid microgrid.

Each area contains renewable energy sources (Wind, Solar), Diesel Generators, and Energy Storage Units.

Due to the fluctuating nature of renewables and load, frequency stability is a critical challenge.

2. System Components

Area 1: Wind Turbine Generator (WTG), Diesel Generator (DEG1), SMES (Magnetic Energy Storage)

Area 2: PV System, Diesel Generator (DEG2), BESS (Battery Storage)

The areas are interconnected via a tie-line.

3. Problem Statement

Power from renewable sources is variable. Sudden changes in load or power cause frequency deviations,

which can lead to instability. Traditional controllers struggle to handle these rapid changes effectively.

4. Solution: MPC + Optimization

A Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is used to control Diesel Generators based on predictions.

Its parameters are optimized using a Hybrid Grey Wolf Optimizer-Pattern Search (HGWO-PS) algorithm.

This improves system response time, reduces overshoot/undershoot, and enhances overall stability.

5. Tasks for Implementation

1. Cybersecurity Integration: Secure data communication, access control, and firewall policies.

2. MPC Controller Development: System modeling and simulation in MATLAB/Simulink.

3. Optimization: Tuning of MPC weights using HGWO-PS.

4. Simulation and Testing: Under various disturbance conditions (load, wind, solar variations).
