7 Language
Read the description of an apartment and complete gaps 1–7.

My apartment is quite big. My favourite room is the kitchen. I spend lots of time there because I love

cooking, so I’ll describe that. It’s actually a kitchen and a dining room, because it’s pretty large. In the centre

of the room 1. a dining table and chairs. To the right of the entrance

2. the fridge, and to the left 3. some

shelves. Next to the shelves 4. a cooker. Next to that

5. a sink and, oh, hang on, no. 6. the

microwave between the cooker and the sink. Beside the sink 7. a

dishwasher.

Listen and check.

Look at the phrases 1–4 from the text. Underline the contractions and mark the weak forms
with /ə/.

1. In the centre of the room there’s a dining table and chairs.

2. Next to the shelves there’s a cooker.

3. There’s a nice king-sized bed in the corner.
