National Institute of Technology Silchar

Mid-Semester (UG) Examination, October, 2021

Subject Code: ME-201 Subject: Basic Thermodynamics
rd
Semester: 3 Branch: Mechanical Engineering
Duration: One hour Total Marks: 20
( All questions are compulsory)
Figures in the right hand margin indicate full marks for the respective questions

1. (a) Consider a device with one inlet and one outlet. If the volume flow rates at the inlet and at the 2
outlet are the same, is the flow through this device necessarily steady? Why?

(b) On a hot summer day, a student turns his fans on when he leaves his room in the morning. 2
When he returns in the evening, will the room be warmer or cooler than the neighbouring
rooms? Why? Assume all the doors and windows are kept closed.

(c) A turbo compressor delivers 2.33 m3/s of air at 0.276 MPa, 430C which is heated at this 4
pressure to 4300C and finally expanded in a turbine which delivers 1860 kW. During the
expansion, there is a heat transfer of 0.09 MJ/s to the surroundings. Calculate the turbine
exhaust temperature if changes in kinetic and potential energy are negligible. Take C p = 1.005
kJ/kgK.

(d) Show that energy is a property of a system. 2

2. (a) Is heat transfer to or from the fluid desirable as it flows through a nozzle? How will heat 2
transfer affect the fluid velocity at the nozzle exit?

(b) Air at 80 kPa, 27°C, and 220 m/s enters a diffuser at a rate of 2.5 kg/s and leaves at 42°C. 3
The exit area of the diffuser is 400 cm2. The air is estimated to lose heat at a rate of 18 kJ/s
during this process. Determine (a) the exit velocity and (b) the exit pressure of the air.

(c) A gas undergoes a thermodynamic cycle consisting of the following processes: i) process 1-2: 5
Constant pressure p = 1.4 bar, V1 = 0.028m3, W1-2 = 10.5 kJ, ii) process 2-3: compression
with pV = C, U3 = U2, iii) process 3-1: constant volume U1 - U3 = -26.4 kJ. There are no
significant changes in KE and PE. Sketch the cycle on (a) p-V diagram, (b) calculate the net
work for the cycle.
