Assignment 5
1. A balanced star connected load is supplied from a symmetrical (balanced) 3
phase, 400 V, ABC system. The current in each phase phase is 30 A and lags 300 behind the phase voltage. Find (a) The phase voltage (b) Load impedance (c) The total power (d) Total reactive power (e) The wattmeter readings (current coils are in phase A and C) if two wattmeter method is used to measure the power drawn from the load. Draw the complete vector diagram. If the above load impedances are connected in delta, determine (f) The total power drawn from the supply (g) The wattmeter readings (current coils are in A and C) if two wattmeter method is used to measure the power. Draw the complete vector diagram. 2. A symmetrical (balanced) 3 phase 400 V, ACB system supplies a balanced delta connected load. The current in each branch circuit is 20A and the phase angle is 400 lagging. Find (a)The line current (b)Total power (c)Source capacity required to supply the load (d)Wattmeter readings (current coils are in A and B) if two wattmeter method is used to measure the power. Draw the complete vector diagram. 3. A 3 phase, 400V delta connected system has the loads: Branch RY, 20kW at power factor lagging 1.0; branch YB, 30kVA at power factor 0.8 lagging; branch BR, 20kVA at power factor 0.6 leading. Find the line currents and readings on wattmeter whose current coils are in phases R and B. 4. Three star connected impedances Z = (20 + j37.7) Ω per phase are in parallel with three delta connected impedances Z = (30−j159.3) Ω per phase The line voltage is 398V. Find the line current, power factor and real and reactive power taken by the combination. Also determine the wattmeter readings (current coils are in B and C), the phase sequence is ABC. 5. Calculate the active and reactive current components in each phase of star connected 10000V, 3 phase generator supplying 5000kW at a power factor of 0.8. If the total current remains the same when the load power factor is raised to 0.9, find the new output. 6. The two wattmeter method is applied to a three-phase, three-wire 400V ABC system with the meters in lines B and C, WB = 836 watts and WC = 224 watts. Find the impedances of the balanced star connected load. 7. Three phase, four wire 208V, ABC system supplies a star connected load in which ZA = 10 00, ZB = 15 300 and Z= = 10 −300. Find the line currents, the neutral current and the total power.
