Why Are Safe Injection Practices Important?


- Prevents transmission of life-threatening infections (HIV, Hepatitis B & C)
- Avoids injection-site complications like abscesses and sepsis
- Ensures patient and healthcare worker safety

Core Principles of Safe Injection Practice


1. One Needle, One Syringe, One Time – Never reuse.
2. Aseptic Technique – Hand hygiene and sterile equipment.
3. Sterile Preparation – Use clean areas, avoid touching sterile parts.
4. Injection Site Safety – Disinfect properly, rotate sites.
5. Proper Sharps Disposal – Use puncture-proof containers immediately.

Use of Vials and Medications


- Single-Dose Vial: Use for one patient only. Discard remainder.
- Multi-Dose Vial: Prefer single-patient use, label with date, store cleanly.
- Ampoules: Use filter needle if needed. Discard after opening.
- Prefilled Syringes: Never transfer contents between syringes.

Sharps Disposal Protocol


- Use puncture-proof white/translucent containers.
- Do not overfill beyond 3/4th.
- Seal and label before disposal.
- Follow Biomedical Waste rules.

Common Unsafe Practices to Avoid


- Reusing syringes or needles.
- Sharing single-dose vials.
- Skipping hand hygiene.
- Recapping needles.
- Improper sharps disposal.

Needle Stick Injury Management


1. Wash with soap and water. Do not scrub.
2. Avoid antiseptics or bleach.
3. Report to Infection Control immediately.
4. Start HIV PEP within 2 hours if indicated.
5. Document and follow-up for HIV, HBV, HCV.

Nurses' Responsibilities
- Verify medication orders.
- Administer injections safely.
- Educate patients.
- Avoid reuse and unsafe practices.
- Report safety breaches or injuries.
