SHEAR AND MOMENT IN BEAMS

The basic problem in strength of materials is to determine the relations between the stresses and
deformations caused by loads applied to any structure. The application of these loads is of principal
concern since majority of the cases, the loading either remains constant over the entire structure or is
distributed in definite amounts to the component parts. That is why, as civil engineers, it is important
that we know beam analysis.

The goal of beam analysis is to determine the shear force and bending moment at every cross-
section of the beam. Particular attention is paid to finding the values and the locations of the maximum
shear force and the maximum bending moment. The results enable the engineer to select a suitable beam
that can support the applied loads.

Sample Problems:

1. Construct the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown by using area
method. Neglect the weight of the beam.

2. Construct the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown by using area
method. Neglect the weight of the beam.

3. Construct the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the beam shown by using area
method. Neglect the weight of the beam.
