Neymar
Neymar made his professional debut with Santos in 2009 and helped them win their
first Copa Libertadores in nearly 50 years in 2011. In 2013, at 21 years old,
Barcelona signed him for €86 million, and he became part of a dominant attacking
trio with Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, dubbed MSN. Neymar won the continental
treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League in the trio's
first season together, finishing as the joint-top goalscorer of the Champions
League campaign and the top goalscorer of the Copa del Rey. Determined to be the
sole star and have more autonomy, he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, when his
release clause of €222 million was triggered to make him the most expensive player
ever.[note 1] In a star-studded team, Neymar was the focal point and became a key
figure in PSG's continued domestic dominance, including five Ligue 1 titles.
Ambitious to lead PSG to their first Champions League triumph, he was pivotal in
their runner-up finish in 2020. Despite injuries hampering much of his career with
PSG, Neymar became one of the club's all-time top goalscorers. In 2023, he parted
ways with PSG to join Saudi club Al Hilal in a lucrative deal, though rarely played
for them due to a year-long ACL injury. He returned to his boyhood club Santos in
January 2025.
At 18, Neymar debuted for Brazil and has since become the nation's second-most-
capped player, only trailing Cafu. He is the nation's all-time top goalscorer, with
79 goals in 128 matches. He won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, winning the
Golden Ball. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he was named in the Dream Team. He
captained Brazil to their first Olympic gold medal in men's football in the 2016
Summer Olympics having already won a silver medal at the 2012 edition. He appeared
in the 2018 World Cup, and three years later helped Brazil finish runner-up to
Argentina in the 2021 Copa América, where he was jointly awarded Best Player and
was named in the Team of the Tournament. In the 2022 World Cup, partly owing to
Neymar's top form for PSG, Brazil were widely considered favourites to win the
tournament; they ultimately suffered a shock quarter-final exit.
Neymar has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or nine times—more than any other
Brazilian player in history—and finished third in 2015 and
