CMPM Lab 2

This laboratory activity focuses on the steel reinforcement of a beam, teaching students about the role and types of reinforcing bars, as well as the proper techniques for cutting, bending, and tying them. It includes objectives, materials, methodology, results discussion, and conclusions emphasizing the importance of correct reinforcement practices for structural integrity. Recommendations for improving efficiency in handling and processing steel reinforcement are also provided.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
LABORATORY NO. 2
CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Steel Reinforcement of Beam (2m x 0.5m x 0.3m)
DATE PERFORMED:
[MM/DD/YYYY]
GROUP MEMBERS:

INSTRUCTOR:
Engr. Charmween Jade G. Constantino

1. OBJECTIVES
At the end of this laboratory activity, students should be able to:
1. Understand the role of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams.
2. Identify different types of reinforcing bars (rebars) and their placement in a
beam.
3. Properly cut, bend, and tie steel reinforcement based on structural
specifications.
4. Ensure reinforcement complies with design codes and best practices.

2. MATERIALS AND TOOLS

Materials:
 Deformed Steel Bars (Grade 40 or 60)
o Main Reinforcement: 12mm Ø (or per given design)

o Stirrups: 12mm Ø (or per given design)

 Tie Wire (16 to 18 gauge)

 Wire Mesh (optional for additional reinforcement)
Tools:
 Rebar Cutter
 Rebar Bender
 Measuring Tape
 Chalk Line
 Pliers
 Tying Tool (or Manual Tying Hook)
 Steel Brush (for cleaning bars)

3. METHODOLOGY
3.1 Preparation
1. Gather the required materials and tools.
2. Review beam reinforcement design, including spacing, bar sizes, and
placement.
3. Clean steel bars to remove rust and dirt using a steel brush.
3.2 Cutting and Bending Reinforcement
1. Cut Main Reinforcement Bars:
o Measure and cut the required number of longitudinal bars (top and
bottom reinforcement).
2. Cut and Bend Stirrups:
o Cut stirrups to the required length.

o Use a rebar bender to form rectangular or square stirrups according to

beam dimensions.
3. Prepare Spacer Bars (if needed):
o Cut small bars to maintain concrete cover distance.

3.3 Assembly and Tying of Steel Reinforcement

1. Position the Main Reinforcement Bars:
o Place the bottom reinforcement inside the formwork, maintaining the
required spacing.
2. Install Stirrups:
o Position stirrups at the specified spacing (e.g., 150mm to 200mm c/c).

o Ensure proper anchorage of stirrups.

3. Tie the Bars Together:

o Use tie wire to secure stirrups to the main bars.

o Ensure all connections are tight and stable.

4. Install Top Reinforcement:

o Place the top bars and tie them securely.

5. Check Reinforcement Placement:

o Ensure correct spacing, concrete cover, and alignment.

4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

1. Were the reinforcement bars placed according to the structural design?
2. Did the stirrup spacing and tying process follow best practices?
3. What difficulties were encountered in cutting, bending, or tying the steel
reinforcement?
4. How does proper reinforcement placement affect the beam’s strength and
durability?

5. CONCLUSION
Summarize the key takeaways from this laboratory, including:
 The importance of correct bar sizing, spacing, and tying.
 The role of stirrups in resisting shear forces.
 The significance of maintaining proper concrete cover for durability.

6. RECOMMENDATIONS
Suggest improvements in handling, cutting, bending, or tying of steel reinforcement
to enhance efficiency and precision.
