Y5 _ SCIENCE Unit Organiser

The document outlines a Year 5 science unit focused on the properties and changes of materials, emphasizing the identification of natural and man-made materials, their properties, and methods of separation. Students will learn about reversible and irreversible changes, as well as the significance of material properties for various uses. The unit includes practical activities and knowledge questions to reinforce understanding of concepts such as solubility, thermal and electrical conductivity, and methods of separation.

Year 5 Term 2

The Properties and Unit Objectives

Changes of Materials I can identify natural and man-made materials and their properties.
I can explain the molecular structure of solids, liquids and gases.
In this unit, children will learn about
different materials, their uses and their I can identify thermal insulators and conductors and electrical insulators and
conductors.
properties, as well as dissolving, separating
I can highlight the properties of a material that make it useful – flexible, transparent,
mixtures and irreversible changes. opaque, translucent, magnetic, strong. soft and hard,
Children will learn how to group materials I can identify the methods of separating materials from each other – sieving, filtering
and evaporation.
according to these properties and identify I can identify reversible and irreversible changes and know that some materials can
their suitability for different uses. This will dissolve – they are soluble or insoluble.
also include how some materials can I can sort materials by their properties – magnetic, permeable, transparent,
change and the reversible and irreversible translucent, flammable, hard, insulating, absorbent.
changes that can take place.
Why is it useful to know the properties of a
material?
It is useful because if you know the properties of a
material, you can then choose the best material for
a purpose.
Some different properties are: magnetic,
reflective, absorbent, permeable, translucent,
flexible, hard, flammable, insulating and
transparent.
Knowledge Questions:
Materials can also change state, as identified
above – dissolving can make a solution whereby
the solid mixes into the water to form a solution.
Frozen liquids can often melt to form liquids again
and vice-versa.
Liquids can also change into gases through the
process of evaporation and condense back into
liquids when they cool down, through the process
of condensation.
Materials with different properties can sometimes
be combined together.
Dependent on the properties of these materials,
we can separate them from each other in different
ways.
To separate larger objects from finer objects, we
can use sieving to separate the different sized
particles.
To separate solids mixed with liquids, we can use
filtering.
Where a solid is dissolved into a liquid, we can
often use the process of evaporation by applying
heat to evaporate the liquid and leave the solid
behind.
We can also use magnetism to separate
magnetic materials from non-magnetic ones.

Materials can sometimes change state, due to heat being applied to them, an applied
liquid causing a change to take place, or chemical changes taking place,
Where the material can change back to its original state – we call this a reversible
change.
Where the original material cannot be changed back into its original form, or a
chemical change has taken place, we call this an irreversible change.
1. Write the meaning of these properties of materials:

Absorbent: _____________________________________________________________

Flammable: ____________________________________________________________

Permeable: ____________________________________________________________

2. Name 2 natural materials:

________________________________________

________________________________________

3. Name two properties of each of these materials which make them good for these jobs:

Sponge used for washing the car: ____________________________________________

Glass used for a greenhouse: _______________________________________________

Plastic used for making electrical plugs: _______________________________________

4. Tick all the changes below that are irreversible:

 Frying an egg
 Melting chocolate
 Dissolving salt in water
 Making bread into toast
 Freezing water to make ice
 Mixing vinegar and bicarbonate of soda
 Burning wood
 Water turning into steam

5. Why is plastic a good material to use for a pan handle?

They decided

They decided to wrap warm jacket potatoes in different materials to see which kept the potato the warmest
for the longest time.

Which variable will be kept the same?

7. Which method of separation would you use to separate:

9. What do these words mean?

Soluble : ___________________________________________________________________________________

Insoluble: __________________________________________________________________________________

10. Write an example of a soluble and insoluble material.
