DAILY DOSE: SIMPLIFIED LEARNING MATERIAL 2021-22

CLASS: 12th
SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY
UNIT NO.: 02
NAME: SOLUTIONS
TOPIC: TYPES OF SOLUTIONS

ASSIGNMENT NO: 01 DATE: 15.05.2021

In our everyday life we mostly use mixture of substances instead of

pure substance, like the air we breathe is a mixture of number of
gases. Mixtures are further classified as homogeneous or
heterogeneous. A homogeneous mixture consists of single phase.
Its composition is uniform throughout the mixture and its
components cannot be seen by naked eye and even not by
microscope. This homogeneous mixture is known as solution.
On the other hand, heterogeneous mixture consists of distinct
phases. Its composition is not uniform throughout the mixture and
its components can be seen by naked eye, and they are not
referred as solutions but mixture only.

ASSIGNMENT NO: 01 CLASS: +2 SUBJECT: CHEMISTRY DATE: 15.05.2021

Solutions: Solutions are the homogeneous mixtures of two or more

than two components. e.q. glucose dissolved in water.
Solvent : The component of solution which is taken in large quantity is
called solvent.
Solute : The component of solution which is taken in small quantity is
called solute.
Binary solution: A solution having only two components is called a
binary solution. e.q. common salt in water, sugar in water etc.
Types of solutions:
a) When the solvent is in solid state, solution is called solid solution.
e.q. alloys, gem stones.

b) When the solvent is in liquid state, solution is called liquid solution.

e.q. brine solution (common salt in water).
c) When the solvent is in gaseous state, solution is called gaseous
solution. e.q. air.

Some important questions

1. What is a solution?
Ans: Solutions are the homogeneous mixtures of two or more than two
components.
2. What is a binary solution?
Ans: A solution having only two components is called a binary solution.
e.q. common salt in water.

3. Define a) aerosol b) alcosol c) benzosol d) aquasol.

Ans: a) A solution in which air act as solvent is called aerosol. e.q.
smoke.
b) A solution in which alcohol act as solvent is called alcosol. e.q.
Tincture of iodine ( 2% ethanolic solution of iodine).
c) A solution in which benzene act as solvent is called benzosol.
e.q. Solution of toluene in benzene.
d) A solution in which water act as solvent is called aquasol. e.q.
brine solution.

4. How aqueous solutions are different from non-aqueous

solutions?
Ans: The solutions in which water act as solvent are called aqueous
solutions. On the other hand the solutions in which water does not act as
solvent, instead some other substance act as solvent are called non
aqueous solutions. e.q. Gasoline.
