Intelligence
Course Name : Robot System Design Max. Marks : 100
Course Code : RAIE132 Duration : 3 Hrs

Instructions to the Candidates:

 Answer one full question from each unit.
 Missing data, if any may be assumed suitably.

UNIT - I

b) Explain Design Considerations. CO1 (07)
c) Explain the professional responsibilities of Design Engineers. CO1 (05)

2. a) The following data refer to a mild steel specimen tested in laboratory. CO1 (08)
Diameter of specimen = 25mm; gage length of specimen = 200mm;
Extension under load of 20kN = 0.04mm; Load at yield point = 150kN;
Maximum load = 225kN; Length of specimen after failure = 275mm;
Neck diameter = 18.25mm.
Determine:
(i)Young’s modulus (ii)Yield stress (iii)Ultimate stress (iv)Percentage
elongation (v)Percentage reduction in area.
b) Define composites and explain different types of composites and CO1 (07)
applications.
c) Give the comparison between resilience and toughness. CO1 (05)

UNIT – II
3. a) Derive an expression for stress and total elongation in an uniformly CO2 (10)
tapering circular bar.
b) A compound bar consisting of bronze, aluminium and steel segments is CO2 (10)
loaded axially as shown in Fig.1. Determine the maximum allowable
value of ‘P’, if the change in length of the bar is not to exceed 2mm and
the working stresses in each material of the bar, indicated in table below
is not to be exceeded.
Material Area A Elastic Working
(mm2) modulus E Stress σw
(MPa) (MPa)
Bronze 450 0.83x105 120
Aluminium 600 0.70 x105 80
Steel 300 2 x105 140

4. a) Define (i) Shear Stress and (ii) Shear strain (iii)Linear strain (iv) Lateral CO2 (10)
Strain (v) Poisson’s ratio.
b) Establish the relationship between modulus of elasticity and modulus of CO2 (10)
rigidity.

UNIT – III
5. a) State and explain maximum principal stress theory of failure. CO3 (08)
b) Design a spindle of milling machine to transmit 15kW at 1000 rpm. The CO3 (07)
angular twist is not to exceed 0.5o per meter length. The material for the
spindle is C45 steel (σy=353 MPa). The outside diameter of the spindle
is twice that of inside diameter. Assume factor of safety = 2 and Modulus
of rigidity G = 79GPa.
c) With usual notations write the general expression for pure torsion CO3 (05)
equation and also state the assumptions made.

6. a) With suitable examples, explain the various method of reducing the CO3 (08)
stress concentration.
b) Fig. 2 shows CI link. The link material has maximum normal stress of CO3 (07)
65MPa. Check the design to transmit a steady tensile load of 50kN and
comment on your recommendation.
