07. Difference between Weldolet and Threadolet
07. Difference between Weldolet and Threadolet
Both weldolate and threadolet are self-reinforced branch fittings developed by a Company called Bonney Forge.
Here in the image, you can see both weldolate and threadolet.
Weldolet Threadolet
No size and pressure class restriction 3000 and 6000 class with small sizes only
The first difference is the use of these two. When threaded branch connections are required from the pipe header, threadolet is used, and
when you need a butt weld connection to the pipe branch, weldolate is used.
The second difference is a use case. Threadolet is used for small size piping with a low-pressure application. There is no such restriction in
the case of weldolate, which can also be used for high-pressure applications.
The third difference is available seizes. Weldolate can be manufactured using any size to suit the requirement. Threadolet is mostly available
in 3000 and 6000 pressure classes with limited size as uses are limited to small tapings.
Elbolet and Elbolet Dimensions
What is Elbolet?
Elbolet is a type of self-reinforced branch fitting developed by a company called Bonney Forge. It is used on Long Radius Elbow for
instrument connections such as thermowell.
Elbolet is available in Threaded end, Socket type (Class 3000 and Class 6000), and Butt type end with Standard Weight, Extra Strong, and
Double Extra Strong (Schedule 160).

Threadolet Dimensions
During the Dimensional inspection of the threadolet, you should check for
• Outer & Inner Diameter of body
• Length of the Hub
• Thread Dimensions
Being a trailer product, threadolets are designed for specific conditions based on Process piping Code ASME B31.3; hence, Dimension is also specified by the
designer. However, MSS-SP-97 provides dimension requirements for standard 90° self-reinforced branch connection with butt, socket, and threaded end types.
• 1st is a pipe-to-pipe branching. Either with a reinforcement pad or with the help of a standard tee. When we make an opening in the pipe for the pipe to
pipe branching without using TEE, it will weaken the pipe. To avoid this, an additional reinforcement pad is welded to the pipe, and this type of branch
connection is fabricated at the site.
• In the second method, instead of an additional reinforcement pad, you used a heavier, specially designed branch that works as a Self-reinforced branch.
• This Specially designed branch connection is known as “Olets.” A Company called Bonney Forge has pioneered this concept, and olet is their registered
trademark.
• Whenever branch connections are required in size where reducing tees are not available and/or when the branch connections are smaller than header
size, Olets are generally used.
• Self-reinforced branches (Olets) are designed as per Process Piping Code ASME B31.3.
• Another standard available is MSS SP-97 which is the Manufacturers Standardization Society.
• The most commonly used olets are.
o Weldolet, Sockolet, Thredolet, Elbolet and Nipolet,
o Special Olets such as Latrolet, Flexolet, and Coupolet are also used sometimes.
Weldolet
Sockolet
Thredolet
• Thredolet is 90° branch connection that comes with a threaded end connection.
• It also Comes in full size or reducing the size.
• The end connection is suited for threaded joint.
Elbolet
• Elbolet is a special type of olets that fits on the elbow surface. It is 90° branch connection and comes in different types of ends that suit for butt welding,
socket welding and threaded joint.
Nipolet
• Nipolet is a weldolet with an extended pipe body. As you can see in the image
• It is 90° branch connection and comes in different types of ends that suit for butt welding, socket welding, or threaded joint.
Latrolet
Coupolet
• Coupolet is Olets with female NPT thread that uses for low-pressure This will reduce the use of one sockolet and one coupling.
Sweepolet
Sockolet Dimensions
During the Dimensional inspection of sockolet, you should check for
• Outer & Inner Diameter of body
• Length of the Hub
• Socket Dimension as per ASME B16.11
Sockolet is designed for specific conditions based on Process piping Code ASME B31.3; hence, Dimensions are also specified by the designer. However, MSS-SP-97
provides dimension requirements for standard 90° self-reinforced branch connection with butt, socket, and threaded end types.
Weldolet Dimensions
During the Dimensional inspection of weldolets, you should check for
• Outer & Inner Diameter of body • Length of the Hub • End preparation (Bevel angle)
Olets are designed for specific conditions based on Process piping Code ASME B31.3; hence, Dimension is also specified by the designer. However, MSS-SP-97
provides dimension requirements for standard 90° self-reinforced branch connection with butt, socket, and threaded end types.
It is used in piping to take branches from the run pipe without using a reinforcement pad.
A reinforcement pad is welded around the branch to compensate for the weakness created by a hole in the run pipe to take the branch.
But you can use heavier, specially designed olets that work as self-reinforced branches. You can see this in the bottom image.
