SECTION B (54 Marks)

Answer all questions in this section.

3. (a) Matter may change its state from one form to another. Using a schematic
diagram, illustrate the changes in states of matter.
(b) A car got burnt. What type of change took place? Give two reasons to support your
answer.

4. (a) Give the uses of nitrogen gas that corresponds with the following properties:
(i) inert nature
(ii) low boiling point.
(b) (i) With the aid of equations, briefly explain how is dry nitrogen obtained from
air.
(ii) Chemical tests of four metals A, B, C, and D show the following results:
Only B and C react with
0.5 M HCl to give hydrogen gas. When B is added to a solution containing
the ions of the other metals, metallic A, C, and D are formed. A reacts with 6
M HNO3 but D does not. Arrange the metals in the increasing order as
reducing agents.

5. (a) Sketch a diagram showing layers of a simple water filter in domestic water
purification and explain the importance of each layer.
(b) A monoatomic ion has a charge of +2. The nucleus of the parent atom has a mass
number of 55. If the number of neutrons in the nucleus is 1.2 times that of the
number of protons, what is the name and symbol of the element?

producing a lot of compounds.

(ii) Explain three sources of organic compounds.

(b) Explain whether the following organic compounds are correctly named, and give
the correct names for the incorrect ones:

three (3) factors on which the amount of metal W deposited during
electrolysis will depend upon.

SECTION C (30 Marks)

Answer two (2) questions in this section

9. The following “cycle of copper” experiment is performed in some general chemistry

laboratories. The series of reactions starts with copper and ends with metallic copper.
The steps are as follows:
(i) A piece of copper wire of known mass is allowed to react with concentrated nitric
acid to form copper (II) nitrate, gas and water.
(ii) The copper (II) nitrate formed is treated with a sodium hydroxide solution to form
copper (II) hydroxide precipitate.
(iii) On heating, copper (II) hydroxide decomposes to yield copper (II) oxide.
(iv) The copper (II) oxide is reacted with concentrated sulphuric acid to yield copper (II)
sulphate.
(v) Copper (II) sulphate is treated with an excess of zinc metal to form metallic copper.
(vi) The remaining zinc metal is removed by treatment with hydrochloric acid, and
