Bachchu Manjhi—A Cycle-Rickshaw Puller
I come from a village in Bihar where I worked as a Mason. My wife and three children live in
the village. We don’t own land. In the village I did not get masonry work regularly. The income
that I earned was not enough for our family.
After I reached this city, I bought an old cycle rickshaw and paid for it in installments. This was
many years ago.
I come to the bus stop every morning and take the customers wherever they want to go. I work
till 8:30 in the evening. I take rides of up to 6 kilometres in the surrounding area. Each customer
gives me Rs. 30-40 per trip depending on the distance. When I am illI can’t do this work so on
those days I don’t earn anything.
I stay with my friends in a rented room. They work in a nearby factory. I earn between Rs. 300-
450 every day, out of which I spend Rs. 150-200 on food and rent. I visit my village two or three
times a year to see my family. Though my family survives on the money I send, my wife also
earns from agricultural work that she gets once in a while.

The mid-day sun is exactly overhead at least once a year on all latitudes in between the Tropic of
Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. This area, therefore, receives the maximum heat and is called
the Torrid Zone. The mid-day sun never shines overhead on any latitude beyond the Tropic of
Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The angle of the sun’s rays goes on decreasing towards the
poles. As such, the areas bounded by the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle in the Northern
Hemisphere, and the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle in the Southern Hemisphere,
have moderate temperatures. These are, therefore, called Temperate Zones.
Areas lying between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole in the Northern Hemisphere and the
Antarctic Circle and the South Pole in the Southern Hemisphere, are very cold. These are called
Frigid Zones.
IV.2Whydoes the torrid zone receive the maximum amount of heat? [1]

I. Read the poem carefully and answer the questions that follow: [1×10=10]
THE FRIENDLY COW
3. How do you say that the cow is completely loyal and domestic?
II. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: [1×10=10]
START EVERYDAY WITH A SMILE
“When you’re smiling .....The whole world will smile with you”.
A smile is more powerful than words. A sincere smile is a wonderful thing. A good salesperson
knows its value---it’s even more important than the value of the product. Consider our closest
animal cousin the chimpanzee, sharing more than 95 percent of our DNA. When a chimp shows
its teeth, the message is ,back off...it’s danger. Even crocodiles look like they are smiling.
According to Angus Trumble’s book‘ A Brief History of the Smile ‘, the nerves that make a natural
smile are different from the ones activated by a false one.
Consider the most famous smile of all, the’Mona Lisa’. In a 2003 study, Harvard Professor
Margaret Livingstone claimed Leonardo Da Vinci painted the ‘Mona Lisa’so that if you stare
straight at her mouth at close range, the famous little smile is not evident- only if you view the
whole face, it can be seen.
SMILE! a sincere smile is still a beam of light in this world. Smiles tend to create their own
weather systems. One can do it for a particular reason to begin with, but it then tends to be self-
perpetuating. Try to smile. Behave a certain way and the mind will come around. Let the tail wag
the dog. SMILE....it is infectious and has immense power to heal our hearts .
Remember, when someone makes a disagreeable remark, a smile can help turn things around. So,
SMILE
