The line graph compares the amount of goods transported in the UK by
road, water, rail, and pipeline between 1974 and 2002.
Overall, road transport was the most widely used method throughout the period, while pipeline carried the least. Goods transported by road and water increased steadily, whereas rail showed fluctuations.
In 1974, approximately 70 million tonnes of goods were transported by
road, compared to around 40 million tonnes by rail. Throughout the period, road freight experienced a steady increase, reaching nearly 100 million tonnes by 2002. In contrast, rail transport showed some fluctuations but ultimately returned to a similar level to that of the initial year.
Water transport initially followed a similar trend to rail but started to
increase significantly after 1978, ultimately rising to about 60 million tonnes in 2002. Pipeline transport began at 5 million tonnes, grew gradually to 22 million tonnes by the mid-1990s, and remained stable thereafter.
